Authorities arrest man after alleged violent attack on 2 Delaware police officers

Authorities arrested a Georgetown, Delaware, man after he reportedly assaulted two officers on Saturday night, the Delaware News Journal reports.

What are the details?

The attack took place at the Starboard Restaurant in Dewey Beach, authorities said, after the suspect, 27-year-old Brandon T. Lewis, reportedly became unruly.

According to the outlet, the Dewey Beach Police Department received a phone call reporting an "unconscious police officer" around 8:20 p.m. local time.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities discovered an officer motionless on the ground while a group fought next to him.

Witnesses said Lewis was "acting disorderly" at the restaurant and was forced out of the restaurant by staff.

Cliff Dempsey, a spokesman for the Dewey Beach Police Department, said that while being escorted out of the property, Lewis assaulted a staff member and fled on foot down Route 1's Coastal Highway.

A Dewey Beach officer saw Lewis fleeing from the restaurant and attempted to detain him as he reportedly actively resisted.

An off-duty police officer from the New Castle County Police Department reportedly witnessed the interaction between Lewis and the Dewey Beach police officer and intervened.

The outlet said that during the struggle, two bystanders pulled the off-duty officer from the altercation as Lewis reportedly struck the Dewey Beach police officer, knocking him unconscious. The off-duty officer was then able to reengage Lewis, and he and another bystander were able to retain him until responding units arrived.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The Dewey Beach officer, who remains unnamed at the time of this reporting, is in stable condition. The New Castle County police officer was treated for facial lacerations and released

According to First State Update, Rehoboth Beach Police, the Department of Natural Resources Police (Parks), Delaware State Police Troop 7, Delaware State Police Aviation Section, Bethany Beach Police, Lewes Police, South Bethany Police, Fenwick Island Police, Selbyville Police, and good Samaritans responded to assist.

Authorities arrested Lewis and charged him with two counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with force or violence, two counts of criminal mischief, and two counts of disorderly conduct.

He is being held at the Sussex County Correctional Institution on $35,000 bail.

VIDEO: Rioter hits Seattle police officer in back of head with metal baseball bat, explosives thrown at cops

Following Wednesday's decision by a grand jury not to indict police officers on homicide charges in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, cities across the country erupted in protests and violence, including St. Petersburg, Portland, and Louisville, where two police officers were shot. In Seattle, riots erupted that included a vicious baseball bat attack on a police officer.

A shocking video from Wednesday night's riots in Seattle shows a man dressed in all black violently smash a police officer in the back of the head with a metal baseball bat. The police officer was wearing a helmet, which may have saved his life.

The officer was attempting to wrest his bicycle back from a person in the crowd. The masked rioter sneaks up on the officer while he is distracted and steps into a swinging attack with the metal bat that hits the cop in the back of the helmet. The officer was able to keep his footing after being bashed in the head and escaped the violent mob.

The Seattle Police Department issued a press release on Wednesday night's violence in the city. "Multiple officers were injured to include one who was struck in the head with a baseball bat cracking his helmet," the statement said, which included photos of the officer's damaged helmet.

The Seattle Police Department also noted that an individual threw an explosive at law enforcement officers at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday night. The incendiary device "exploded near waiting bike officers."

When cops attempted to arrest the suspect, they were assaulted with glass bottles and rocks from the crowd of rioters. Police said they "deployed pepper spray and blast balls in an attempt to create space between the officers and the protestors."

Agitators also cut wires powering the security cameras to the precinct and set dumpsters on fire, and more explosives were thrown at officers. Seattle Police declared the ongoing protest an unlawful assembly after several fireworks were fired at police.

The Seattle police said they arrested 13 individuals. Charges include property destruction, resisting arrest, failure to disperse, and assault on an officer.

Earlier this week, the Department of Justice announced that Seattle is one of three U.S. cities declared to be "anarchist jurisdictions," along with Portland and New York City. The designation could cause those cities to lose federal funding.

Scott Walker nails Kamala Harris after she visits Jacob Blake and says she's 'proud' of him: But will you visit ambushed LA deputies, too?

Former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) called out Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, saying the California senator should visit the two Los Angeles deputies who were shot Saturday night in an ambush-style attack.

Walker said that it only seemed right that Harris visit the deputies when she took the time out of her busy campaigning schedule to visit Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times in the back by a police officer on Aug. 23 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

2 LA County deputies down

A suspect fired on the deputies in an apparently unprovoked attack as they sat in a police cruiser on a Los Angeles street, authorities say.

Both officers were "severely wounded" during the attack and taken to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery. Though protesters converged on the hospital, demanding health officials leave the severely wounded officers to die, the two are expected to live.

What did Gov. Walker say, anyway?

On Sunday, Walker wrote, "Will @kamalaharris visit deputies who were shot (31-year-old mom & 24 year-old) in her state? She visited someone in WI who was charged with felony 3rd-degree sexual assault and said she was proud of him."

"She and @JoeBiden need to side with law enforcement and denounce radicals," Walker's tweet closed.

Do we know anything else about the shooting?

A manhunt is underway for the suspect who callously fired on the deputies on Saturday.

Officials are offering a $100,000 reward for information on the shooting.

The sheriff's department describes the suspect as a black man between 28 and 30 years old wearing dark clothing. He was last seen in a dark sedan, authorities say.

So did Harris respond?

Later on Sunday, Harris wrote, "Doug [Emhoff] and I are keeping the two Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies in our hearts as they currently fight for their lives after a horrific attack last night. The perpetrator must be brought to justice."

What's this about her visit with Blake?

Harris did visit Blake, and according to Blake's attorney, Benjamin Crump, the vice presidential nominee told Blake that she was "proud of him and how he is working through his pain."

"Sen. Harris has an inspirational and uplifting one-hour visit with Jacob Blake, Jr., and his family today. She spoke individually with each family member about how they were handling the trauma and urged them to take care of their physical and mental health," a statement from Crump read.

"In a moving moment, Jacob Jr. told Sen. Harris that he was proud of her, and the senator told Jacob that she was also proud of him and how he is working through his pain," the statement added.

The statement noted that Harris promised Blake that she and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would work to "make things better for all Americans" if they are elected, including the Justice in Policing Act and implicit bias training.

What else do we know about Blake and the shooting?

A Kenosha, Wisconsin, police officer reportedly shot Blake in the back seven times on Aug. 23 during a call responding to a reported domestic dispute.

According to a report from the Kenosha Police Union, Blake confronted officers when they arrived on the scene. He allegedly placed one of the officers in a headlock and was armed with a knife that he reportedly refused to drop.

The Kenosha officer then opened fire on Blake as he attempted to get into his vehicle, where his three children sat.

Kenosha Police Union attorney Brendan Matthews told WCCO-TV that Blake was reportedly at the residence of his ex-girlfriend, who accused him of a violent sexual assault that reportedly took place in May.

Reports noted that Blake was not permitted to be on the premises, but had shown up anyway in an alleged attempt to steal the woman's keys and vehicle.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice continues to investigate the incident.
