Chicago police officer Ella French, 29, murdered during traffic stop only 2 months after giving birth to baby

A 29-year-old Chicago police officer is dead after being shot during a traffic stop. The police officer, Ella French, had just returned to the force following the birth of her child two months ago. Another cop involved in the deadly traffic stop is fighting for his life.

French and her partner conducted a traffic stop in the South Side's West Englewood neighborhood around 9 p.m. on Saturday night, according to the Chicago Tribune. There were three people in the stopped vehicle, and at least one of the suspects fired upon the officers, who returned fire. The two cops and one of the suspects were shot.

The downed officers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the wounded suspect was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Ella French was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the other officer was listed in critical condition.

Chicago Fraternal Order of Police revealed the tragic details in a Facebook post that reads, "Late last night 2 of our own were shot. We lost a sister in blue. Officer Ella French was murdered while conducting a traffic stop with her partners. Our hearts go out to her family, friends and co-workers. The 2nd officer is still fighting for his life. Please keep him in your prayers and thoughts."

French had been on the force since April 2018, according to Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown. She had just returned from maternity leave after giving birth to a baby daughter two months ago.

Andrew French, the older brother of Ella French, expressed what a person of integrity she was.

"My sister's always been a person of integrity. She's always done the right thing even when no one's looking," he said. "She has some attributes that you don't find in this world anymore."

"God took the wrong kid," Andrew said of his younger sister's death.

Superintendent Brown said of his police officers, "They come to work willing to run toward danger, toward gunfire. And they're willing to sacrifice their lives to save the lives of perfect strangers."

"They went to work today after last night's tragic, tragic events," Brown continued. "Others are at work now, right now, continuing this brave, courageous work of protecting the people of Chicago."

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called for a "day of mourning."

"I am here as mayor to declare an official day of mourning for our city," Lightfoot said. "I also want to address another issue that's been lashing our city for far too long. There are some who say that we do not do enough for the police and that we are handcuffing them from doing their jobs. There are others who say we do too much for the police, and then we never hold them accountable for what they do, particularly in Black and brown neighborhoods. All of this, I say, stop. Just stop. This constant strife is not what we need in this moment."

"We have a common enemy. It's the guns and the gangs," Lightfoot added. "Eradicating both is complex. But we cannot let the size of the challenge deter us. We have to continue striking hard blows every day."

French is the first Chicago police officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty since December 2018. So far in 2021, 38 CPD officers have been shot or shot at, according to The Sun. In 2020, 79 officers were shot at or shot.

All three suspects have been apprehended, but their names have not been released. Brown said, "It seems that neither of the three offenders have extensive [criminal] background."

On-duty police officer ambushed, killed as he sat in his home while taking a lunch break; his significant other also struck down, hospitalized

A Selma, Alabama, police officer was fatally shot Tuesday morning as he stopped at his home for a meal break, The Birmingham News reports.

The suspect also reportedly wounded Moorer's "significant other," the outlet reported, in addition to killing the officer.

What are the details?

Officer Marquis Moorer, 25, arrived at his home at Selma Square Apartments between 3:30 and 4 a.m. local time when an unidentified suspect approached the officer's home and opened fire as the officer sat inside his home on break.

Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said that the female victim, who remains unnamed, was hospitalized, but neither the severity of her injuries nor her condition were immediately known at publishing time.

The police along with a variety of other agencies including the State Bureau of Investigation, Selma police, the Dallas County Sheriff's Office, the ATF, and the 4th Judicial Drug Task force are investigating the shooting and ask anyone with information on the attack call (855)-75-CRIME or 855-752-7463.

Central Alabama Crime Stoppers is offering $2,500 in connection with any information on Moorer's murder.

Jackson said that Moorer was an "outstanding officer" who took his job "very seriously."

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall condemned the attack in an emotionally charged statement.

"Once again, one of Alabama's law enforcement heroes has been tragically struck down," Marshall said in a Tuesday morning statement on Moorer's death. "Early this morning, Officer Marquis Moorer was on duty with the Selma Police Department and had stopped by his home for a lunch break when shots were fired from outside. Officer Moorer was killed, and another person inside the residence at Selma Square Apartments was injured and has been hospitalized. Every day, officers routinely risk their lives by simply putting on their uniforms and performing their duties to protect their fellow citizens. We must honor them and never take for granted the sacrifices they make on our behalf. I ask you to join me in prayerful gratitude for Officer Moorer as we hold his loved ones in our hearts."

In a statement on the officer's murder, Selma Mayor James Perkins said, "This morning is yet another tragic moment in our city. I'm really saddened over the murder of Officer Moorer."

"If you hear something, if you know something, call that number and say something," Perkins added. "This and all the other crime taking place in our community is not going unintended [sic]."

Selma Police Department Chief Kenta Fulford said that the department is left "devastated" over Moorer's murder, and is asking for prayers, and Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) is also issuing a memo to lower the flag to honor the fallen officer.

What else?

According to WIAT-TV, authorities are still looking for suspects involved in the shooting.

WSFA-TV reported that Marshall said the suspect or suspects will be charged with capital murder and attempted murder when caught — and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Secretary Hal Taylor promises the agencies will do their best to bring this person or these persons to justice.

"I want to assure everyone that we are absolutely committed to apprehending the suspect or suspects involved in this horrendous tragedy," Taylor vowed. "We are fully involved in the investigation and are currently taking all the necessary steps to ensure every facet of this case is handled with care and diligence, but is conducted in a manner that brings justice to bear both quickly and swiftly."

No information about what led up to the shooting has been released at the time of this reporting.

Illegal immigrant in Houston allegedly shoots and kills one police officer and wounds another

An illegal immigrant in Houston is in custody after reportedly shooting and killing one police officer and wounding another after the two officers responded to a domestic violence call Tuesday.

What are the details?

According to KHOU-TV, the suspect, Elmer Manzano-Martinez, 51, has a lengthy and violent criminal record and was the subject of two domestic violence reports submitted to the Houston Police Department in the week preceding Tuesday's incident.

In one of them filed on Sunday, Manzano-Martinez's estranged wife reportedly told police her "ex-husband was walking around with a gun" and she was "in fear of her life" because "she didn't know what her ex-husband will do to her."

On Tuesday morning, Manzano-Martinez allegedly opened fire on the two officers, Sgt. Harold Preston and Officer Courtney Waller, while they talked with his ex-wife in the parking lot of their apartment complex.

Preston, 65, a 41-year veteran of the force, would later succumb to his injuries, but Waller is expected to survive. Manzano-Martinez sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and his 14-year-old son was also shot during the firefight.

KTVT-TV reported that Manzano-Martinez was taken to the hospital following the incident and is listed in stable condition.

Following his arrest Tuesday, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement lodged an immigration detainer request with the Houston Police Department and confirmed that Manzano-Martinez, a citizen of El Salvador, is "unlawfully present in the U.S."

ICE lodges detainer requests with state and local police departments when there is probable cause to believe that an arrested individual is a removable alien.

What else?

In a news conference following the Preston's death, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said, "We've lost just a wonderful human being. He is leading with men and women on streets, instead of choosing to sit in an office drinking coffee and reading the paper. That is the man he was — he is a man who lived with elderly parents to take care of them. As good as he was as a cop, he was a better human being, that is just the guy that he was and we are going to miss him."

Acevedo added in a tweet that those who knew Preston "knew him to be a wonderful, courageous, and humble servant, from an amazing family."
