Shocking video reportedly shows suspect, cop brawling inside officer's runaway SUV, ending in fatal police shooting: 'He was fighting for his life'

A man who allegedly "violently" assaulted an officer inside a runaway police vehicle was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Around 4 p.m. on Thursday, a police officer spotted a U-Haul truck that was reported stolen out of Richmond, Virginia. The officer approached the man standing outside the U-Haul truck at a gas station.

The driver shoved the officer into his own police vehicle, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

"The assailant in this matter shoved our police officer into the open, front driver’s door of his marked police car and was attacking him, was on top of him, and was violently assaulting our uniformed Fairfax County Police officer," Fairfax County Police Department Chief Kevin Davis said during a press conference on Thursday night.

The police officer was able to contact the police dispatcher to request help after the man reportedly took the officer's gun.

“All the while, our police officer is on his radio, making several radio transmissions that he’s being attacked. He also relays during his radio transmissions several times that our assailant has his gun, has his gun,” Davis said, according to WTOP. “He was fighting for his life, literally.”

Video taken by a witness shows the police SUV put in reverse and speeding backward out of the gas station before crashing into a parked car at a McDonald's parking lot. The two men inside the police car are seen struggling. Numerous gunshots can be heard.

Responding officers approach the crashed police SUV with guns drawn. A responding officer, a 24-year veteran, pulls the man out of the vehicle and opens fire on the suspect. Davis described the responding officer as a "hero."

Two responding officers discharged their firearms, according to the police.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the crime scene.

The officer who was reportedly attacked suffered minor injuries, including scrapes, bruises, and a bloodied eye.

Davis said that the "victim police officer" did not discharge his service firearm.

Davis said there is bodycam video of the alleged violent attack inside, but the footage has yet to be released. The chief said the bodycam video shows the alleged attacked officer "face down" with the suspect "on top of our police officer."

Davis said the incident was "quite a dramatic scene" and "highly unusual," adding, "I've never quite seen something like this."

The suspect accused of assaulting the officer has not yet been identified.

VIDEO: Police bodycam shows lethal shooting of armed Chicago man during foot chase

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability in Chicago released bodycam and surveillance footage of the lethal shooting of 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez in March.

Activists had immediately claimed that the death of Alvarez, a Hispanic man, was racially motivated.

The graphic video shows Alvarez being chased by a police officer identified as 29-year-old Evan Solano. A police union official later said that Alvarez had escaped from police in a vehicle the day before the shooting. Solano had spotted the man and given chase.

Here's the graphic video:

The video shows Alvarez stumble as he runs from the officer, then appear to toss a gun after being shot.

"Drop the gun! Drop the gun!" the officer shouts a moment before he shoots at Alvarez.

"Why you shooting me?!" Alvarez says after falling to the ground.

"You had a gun!" the officer responds.

A second video shows another angle of the incident from home surveillance video.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is still investigating the incident, but the officer has been stripped of his police duties while the probe is pending. COPA spokesman Ephraim Eaddy conceded that it is rare for such action to be taken against an officer so early in an investigation.

Police union chief John Catanzara defended the officer's actions, saying that he likely believed Alvarez was in the act of turning towards him with the gun in his hand.

"There is nothing wrong with this shooting just because the bullet struck the offender from behind," said Catanzara.

"It is important for the public to look at this with an open mind," he explained. "The officer fears (he) would turn and fire because that's the motion he was making."

Officials have not revealed why Alvarez was being sought by police, but Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot claimed that he had only committed a traffic offense.

"We can't live in a world where a minor traffic offense results in someone being shot and killed," Lightfoot said. "That's not acceptable to me and it shouldn't be acceptable to anyone."

Pulse-pounding dashcam video shows moment police chase suspect opens fire on cops with AK-47

Terrifying dashcam video of a police chase suspect spraying gunfire at cops while they were in pursuit has been released to the public. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office in Georgia recently released the chilling footage of the dangerous situation where three police officers were shot and the suspect was killed.

A Georgia State Patrol trooper clocked a vehicle speeding at 111 mph on Interstate 20 in Bremen, Georgia, at 3:30 a.m. on Monday. The officer pulled over the 2015 Nissan Sentra, but the driver sped off as the trooper approached the car. The state trooper went into a high-speed pursuit of the Sentra, and bumped the vehicle to disable it. When the officer attempted to bump the Sentra a second time, a passenger "leaned out of the front passenger window and began firing at the trooper with a rifle," the Georgia Bureau of Investigations said in a news release.

The passenger shot CPS Sgt. Rob Holloway, who lost control of his patrol car and hit a utility pole.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office, the Carrollton Police Department, and the Villa Rica Police Department joined the pursuit near the border of Alabama.

The Sentra reportedly crashed near an elementary school in Villa Rica.

Corporal Jamison Troutt and Deputy Jay Repetto from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office drove up to the cruiser of Villa Rica officer Chase Gordy, who was also shot. As the officers got closer, a man appeared out of the dark woods and suddenly pulled out an AK-47. The man, later identified as Pier Shelton, unleashed a hail of bullets at the officers. Repetto was shot in the arm, and the police cruiser was disabled after being riddled with bullets.

"Corporal Troutt and Deputy Repetto returned fire and stopped the threat in a matter of seconds which allowed first responders to render aide to Officer Gordy who had been shot multiple times," the Carroll County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "If not for the heroic efforts of all Officers and agencies involved and to Corporal Troutt and Deputy Repetto for stopping the suspect, this incident could have resulted in more Officers being injured or killed and the suspects could have posed an even bigger threat to the public as this occurred in a residential area."

Pier Shelton, 28, was fatally shot by law enforcement.

The second suspect in the Sentra was identified as Aaron Jajuan Shelton, the shooter's brother. Aaron Shelton was apprehended a short time later, according to law enforcement. The 22-year-old was charged with five counts of aggravated assault and three counts of aggravated battery. He is being held at the Carroll County Jail, and was denied bond by the judge.

Sergeant Rob Holloway, who has been with the department since 2008, was flown to an Atlanta area hospital where he underwent surgery. He is in the ICU, but his condition is improving.

Officers Gordy and Repetto were transported to a hospital in the Atlanta area, and have since been released.

Carroll County Sheriff Terry Langley said the officers are expected to recover, and pointed out that the situation "could have been a lot worse."

"Watching the video, it really sent chills up my spine," Carroll County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Ashley Hulsey told WSB-TV.
