Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. claims that adding seats to the Supreme Court would 'reinvigorate our Constitution'

As Democratic lawmakers call for for adding seats to the U.S. Supreme Court, Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. of New Jersey is claiming that increasing the number of justices would "reinvigorate our Constitution."

"I urge all my colleagues to support expanding the supreme court. Balancing the court will undo decades of republican court packing, reinvigorate our Constitution, and protect American democracy," Pascrell tweeted on Friday.

In a June tweet, Pascrell used the same language, accusing the GOP of "court packing" and claiming that "New justices will reinvigorate our Constitution to reflect our nation."

The nation's high court has been fixed at nine seats for more than a century, but some Democrats are clamoring to add more justices. "The number of Justices on the Supreme Court changed six times before settling at the present total of nine in 1869," according to the Supreme Court website.

Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington declared in a tweet on Friday, "I'm a woman of color who's had an abortion, is in a loving, interracial marriage, and has an amazing trans daughter. This extremist Supreme Court is a direct threat to me, my loved ones, and to millions of people all across this country. We need balance now. Expand the Court."

Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones of New York tweeted on Wednesday, "Expand the Supreme Court before Clarence Thomas’ far-right dystopia becomes our reality." In a post on Friday, Jones declared that "the cascade of horrors won’t stop until Democrats use their power. Expanding the Court is more important than ever."

While Democrats have been outraged lately by the Supreme Court's ruling that enabled states to ban abortions, progressives had already been pushing to pack the court prior to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Liberal lawmakers have even advocated for legislation to add seats to the high court.

Progressive Democrat Jayapal issues bizarre claim about poverty and gets scorched on social media

Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington issued a bizarre claim about poverty and billionaires, and most people responded with confusion and derision.

"One million people will fall into poverty every 33 HOURS this year. One new billionaire was created every 30 HOURS over the last two years," wrote Jayapal in a tweet Thursday.

\u201cOne million people will fall into poverty every 33 HOURS this year.\n\nOne new billionaire was created every 30 HOURS over the last two years.\n\nBoth of these things shouldn't be true. Tax the rich and level the playing field.\u201d

"Both of these things shouldn't be true. Tax the rich and level the playing field," she added.

Many responded to confusion about the tweet because it would mean that nearly all Americans would fall into poverty before the end of the year.

Jayapal's claim was apparently sourced from a report by Oxfam International that predicted a rise in poverty globally based on the continuing increase of inflation.

One critic pointed out that the number of those in "extreme poverty" globally had decreased since 1990 according to data from the World Bank.

Others took the occasion to take shots at Jayapal and her support of far-left policies.

"Capitalism has lifted literally hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty in this century. Yet leftists continue to tell this story," read one response.

"The 'million people falling into poverty every 33 hours' is an Oxfam estimate for 2022. It could be true, and would be very bad But also, from 1981 to 2019 over 1.2 billion people worldwide rose out of poverty by this definition. That's 120,000 people every 33 hours FOR DECADES," said one user.

"One million every 33 hours? Wow. I had no idea Biden's economy was that bad. Sounds like we made a huge mistake electing him," responded another critic.

"Take away all the money from a billionaire and give to 1 million poor people, they would get $1 thousand dollars. Not quite the solution Paypal thought it was. Nice try pramilla. Not really," replied a detractor who did the math.

Oxfam's solution to the problem they documented was to encourage nations across the world to add massive taxes on the wealthy.

Jayapal was similarly lambasted and excoriated in 2021 when she claimed that America was fourth in poverty worldwide. Her critics pounced on the opportunity to point out the absurdity of such a claim.

Biden exploring mass cancellation of student loan debt, tells House Democrat: 'You're going to like what I do'

President Joe Biden reportedly told a group of House Democrats this week that he is exploring how to cancel all outstanding student loan debt.

As a presidential candidate, Biden promised to forgive $10,000 of student loan debt for every borrower. He has not yet followed through on that promise. However, he has repeatedly extended the COVID-related moratorium on student loan payments.

Outstanding federal student loan debt currently stands at $1.6 trillion.

What are the details?

During a private meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Monday, Biden confirmed that he is exploring what executive action he can take to cancel student loan debt.

Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-Calif.) disclosed to CBS News that he told Biden at the meeting that his caucus supports canceling $10,000 of student loan debt per borrower. In response, Cardenas explained the president "smiled and said, 'You're going to like what I do on that, I'm looking to do something on that and I think you're going to like what I do.'"

Another lawmaker who attended the meeting anonymously told CBS News the White House is even exploring canceling all student loan debt.

"They're looking at different options on what they can do. On forgiving it entirely. That was our request," the lawmaker said.

While moderate lawmakers support canceling some student loan debt, progressive Democrats want to cancel all of it as an act of social justice.

"Student debt cancellation is racial justice. Student debt cancellation is gender justice. Student debt cancellation is economic justice," Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) said earlier this month.

What is the WH saying?

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Monday that the White House, while not yet making a determination about the president's authority to unilaterally cancel student loan debt, will announce any decision on debt cancellation before the payment moratorium expires on Aug. 31.

Thus far, the Biden administration has forgiven $17 billion in student loans, Forbes reported.

However, canceling all student loan debt via executive action would create an entirely new set of issues. Critics would immediately challenge Biden's action in court, leaving borrowers in limbo for an unknown amount of time. On the other hand, legislation passed by Congress with bipartisan support would be less vulnerable to legal challenges. But Congress is unlikely to pass such legislation in the near future.

'Stop pimping black people': Fox Business host Charles Payne slams Democrats who say student debt cancellation is 'racial justice'

Fox Business host Charles Payne went off on progressive lawmaker Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) on Monday after the congresswoman tweeted that student loan debt cancellation is a "racial justice" issue.

"Where's the racial justice?" Payne demanded on "Fox & Friends" after noting that student loan debt is held in large portions by Asians, Hispanics, and white people. He observed that wealthy, college-educated people stand to disproportionately benefit from student loan forgiveness, which is a priority for progressives.

“Progressives have hijacked the pain and suffering of black Americans for everything that they want to push," Payne said. "It's despicable; it must stop now."

"I’m gonna say something very vulgar to the progressives: Stop pimping black people, okay?” he continued, calling federal student loan cancellation "nonsensical" and "unfair" since taxpayers are being asked to pay other people's debts.

“Listen, it’s an economic disaster. It’s a farce,” he said. “You can’t tell me on one hand we are going to help people go to college and on the other hand tell me college doesn’t pay for it itself. You can’t have it both ways. One has to be correct.”

Watch:

The Department of Education extended the pandemic-era moratorium on student loan repayment last week, permitting an estimated 43 million Americans until August 31 to put off loan payments without accruing additional interest. There is an outstanding $1.6 trillion in U.S. student loan debt owed to the federal government, but the Biden administration is refraining from collecting on that debt with record-high inflation squeezing Americans' pocketbooks.

Far-left Democrats have demanded that Biden go further and act to cancel U.S. student loan debt. In March, Jayapal and other progressive Democrats sent a letter to the president asking him to extend the repayment pause through the end of the year at least and writing that restarting payments "will financially destabilize many borrowers and their families, and will cause hardship for many who could not afford repayment."

"As your administration works towards rebuilding a more equitable and just economy, it should use its administrative powers to address this crisis and permanently relieve the millions of borrowers struggling with this debt," they wrote.

On Saturday, Jayapal tweeted that student debt cancellation is a "racial justice" issue, in addition to "gender justice" and "economic justice."

Student debt cancellation is racial justice. \n\nStudent debt cancellation is gender justice.\n\nStudent debt cancellation is economic justice.

Payne challenged Jayapal's claim Monday, noting that black people only make up 4.8% of the people she represents in Washington's 7th Congressional District.

"Who is she really helping in her district? 73% white, over 60% graduation rate, more than double the national average. It is a gift to her white donors," Payne asserted.

"One more thing ... Who are her donors? Try Microsoft, number one donor. You know how many black people work for Microsoft? You can go down to the next train station and find more. Three percent are managers — It's one of the largest corporations in the world!" he continued. "Now here's the problem: They keep saying well, black people have more of a percentage, you know, it's harder to pay it back. That's not the college loan. That's society. That's Microsoft. That's progressive corporations who will write a check to a bogus organization and buy six million dollar house instead of really hiring people, training people. They're the ones who don't believe in black people, Microsoft, the people progressives are protecting," he said.

"The whole thing is a sham."
