Why we need God’s blessing more than ever in 2024

A republican form of government deriving its powers from the people? Check. A system of checks and balances? Check. A dual track of federalism? Check. Respect for natural law and fundamental rights? Check.

However, one critical component remained for our Founders to establish this country successfully — an element they universally regarded as the most important factor in uniting and prospering as a nation: God’s providence and blessing. To secure that blessing, America’s Founders believed the new nation had a responsibility to publicly acknowledge, proclaim, and give thanks to God for the blessings already bestowed.

The challenges we face today are far too great for any human plan to overcome. We must return to the one course of action that has always sustained this nation.

The Bible inspired the concept, timing, and customs of Thanksgiving. The Jewish holiday of the Feast of Tabernacles, also known as the Feast of Ingathering, was celebrated every fall to thank God for a successful harvest and acknowledge his providence as the source of their blessings. During this time, as the Israelites prepared for the new rainy season that would nourish the land for the next year's harvest, they prayed for rain. This practice emphasized that all existing bounty came from God and that future success depended on remaining worthy of his continued blessings. Today, devout Jews around the world celebrate this holiday, which falls in late September or early October.

On September 25, 1789, the newly established Congress passed a resolution asking President George Washington to declare a “day of public humiliation and prayer.” This day of prayer and thanksgiving, as described by Roger Sherman, aimed to replicate “the solemn thanksgivings and rejoicings which took place in the time of Solomon, after the building of the Temple.” That celebration, mentioned in 1 Kings, occurred during the Feast of Tabernacles following the fall harvest.

George Washington issued the proclamation on October 3, to be observed on November 26 of the same year. This public day of prayer aimed to beseech God “to pardon our national and other transgressions” and “to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue.”

Notably, as a lasting rebuttal to the ultra-secular zealots of today, the House passed this resolution on the very same day it approved the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, ensuring no law would be made “respecting an establishment of religion.” While the Founders sought to protect individuals from being coerced into practicing a particular religion, they also recognized the importance of promoting voluntary public thanksgiving to God. Just as a nation relies on its military and economy, they understood the necessity of divine providence.

President William McKinley reflected this sentiment in his 1899 Thanksgiving proclamation. He advised,

This day religious exercises shall be conducted in the churches or meeting places of all denominations, in order that in the social features of the day its real significance may not be lost sight of, but prayers may be offered to the Most High for a continuance of the divine guidance without which man’s efforts are vain, and for divine consolation to those whose kindred and friends have sacrificed their lives for country.

McKinley used Thanksgiving to express gratitude for those who sacrificed for the country while also emphasizing the day’s focus on “religious exercises.” Fast forward 120 years, and unelected judges now wield power to ban public prayer and remove a 92-year-old World War I memorial. Had President Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving as a national holiday in today’s era, federal judges might have declared it “unconstitutional” under the guise of extremism.

It’s clear we need God’s blessings now more than ever.

This year, it’s difficult to mask the reality of cultural depravity and the seemingly irreparable nature of our political system. Our current government stands in direct opposition to the founding virtues Thanksgiving was meant to celebrate. Yet, we must remember that the earthly powers destroying our nation hold no true power on their own. That assurance — that we rest solely in God’s hands — remains a profound reason for gratitude.

Calvin Coolidge captured this sentiment in his 1923 Thanksgiving proclamation: “Even in the least propitious times, a broad contemplation of our whole position has never failed to disclose overwhelming reasons for thankfulness.” Similarly, Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation — the first to establish Thanksgiving on its current date — found hope and gratitude amid the “civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity.”

Reflecting on recent natural disasters reminds us of our vulnerability and our place in God’s hands. We may believe we have everything under control, but ultimately, we are not in charge. As Proverbs 19:21 states, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

The challenges we face today are far too great for any human plan to overcome. We must return to the one course of action that has always sustained this nation — recognizing and seeking the blessings of the one who grants them.

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Let us turn to the Lord, lifting our prayers as our forefathers did in the first Thanksgiving proclamation of the Continental Congress on November 1, 1777: “It is the indispensable duty of all men to adore the superintending Providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with gratitude their obligation to Him for benefits received, and to implore such further blessings as they stand in need of.”

Restoring America: Faithful citizens celebrate a divine reprieve

The scripture verse that came to mind on the morning of Nov. 6 was Psalm 126:3 (NIV):

The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.

In the months leading up to the election, I had been reading through the Old Testament. As I studied Kings and Chronicles, I noticed a pattern: When Israel’s kings followed God’s law, their nation thrived. But when they turned to worship false gods like Ashtoreth and Baal, their nation suffered curses.

The fundamental transformation of America may finally have been derailed, and now the work of foundational restoration can begin.

Over the past three and a half years, our country has experienced a significant decline. A win by the Democratic Party — whether by fair means or otherwise — seemed likely to accelerate that downward spiral with the continuation and expansion of its policies. For now, however, we appear to have a reprieve. This moment may depend on our nation’s willingness to return to the God who loves and cares for us.

I have seen that fools may be successful for the moment, but then comes sudden disaster. (verse 3)

He [the Lord] does great things too marvelous to understand. He performs countless miracles. (verse 9)

I had been praying for miracles throughout this election season — long before the assassination attempt on July 13 — and it seems clear that God controlled events in ways beyond coincidence. Donald Trump has demonstrated extraordinary resilience in the face of relentless attacks from a determined deep state. Against all odds, Trump has not only emerged victorious but may now hold a legendary place in history.

The events since his near-death experience in mid-July may have profoundly changed Trump’s character. Those who listened to his speech in the early hours of Nov. 6 likely noticed a newfound tone of humility.

Two scripture verses seem to speak directly to what Trump’s adversaries have schemed and unleashed against him:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28, NIV)

And Joseph’s words to his brothers who sold him into slavery, only to later find him in a position of power in Egypt, blessing them:

You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. (Genesis 50:20, NLT)

Is America “out of the woods” because of this election’s results? Will Christians, Jews, and people of goodwill celebrate a great victory today only to return to complacency tomorrow? Let’s hope not. Can anyone deny that our lack of vigilance allowed evil influences to blindside us? Like the proverbial frog in slowly boiling water, we almost woke up too late.

The pastors I have spoken with or watched on television agree: The 2024 election was not the finish line — it marks the starting point.

We must continue praying for the new administration. Pray for wisdom and steadfastness as they work to purge evil from our nation and promote righteousness across society and culture.

The fundamental transformation of America may finally have been derailed, and now the work of foundational restoration can begin.

As our Founding Fathers declared in the Declaration of Independence, “with a firm reliance on Divine Providence,” we can succeed in restoring true freedom and responsibility to America. In doing so, we can also renew hope and inspiration for nations around the globe.

California sues Catholic hospital for refusing to abort twins after mother's water broke

California's Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta continued his crusade against pro-life institutions Monday, filing a lawsuit against a Catholic hospital, Providence St. Joseph of Eureka, for not promptly aborting a mother's twins.

"With today's lawsuit, I want to make this clear for all Californians: Abortion care is health care. You have the right to access timely and safe abortion services," said Bonta. "At the California Department of Justice, we will use the full force of this office to hold accountable those who, like Providence, are breaking the law."

According to the complaint, Anna Nusslock visited Providence after her water prematurely broke and she began bleeding. A doctor allegedly diagnosed Nusslock, then 15 weeks pregnant, with previable premature pre-labor rupture of membranes and told the mother that while both twins had heart tones, one of them was sure to perish and the fate of the other baby was uncertain.

Another doctor at University of California San Francisco Medical Center told Nusslock over the phone that there was only a remote chance that the second twin might survive.

'We have a hospital implementing a policy that's reminiscent of heartbeat laws in extremist red states.'

The hospital, which recently saved the life of a baby boy born 96 days early, allegedly informed Nusslock that policy precluded medical professionals there from providing an an "emergency" abortion as long as one of the babies had a "detectable heartbeat" or unless there was an immediate risk to Nusslock's life.

"It is damning that here in California, where abortion care is a constitutional right, we have a hospital implementing a policy that's reminiscent of heartbeat laws in extremist red states," Bonta said of the apparent policy against elective abortions.

The complaint noted that the hospital initially recommended that Nusslock be helicoptered to the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, but she declined, unwilling to be separated from her husband and convinced that her insurance would not cover the cost. The hospital then allegedly discharged Nusslock with free towels and instructions to drive to Mad River Community Hospital, roughly 20 minutes away.

The lawsuit accuses the hospital of violating the Unruh Civil Rights Act, violating the health code's nonmedical transfer provision, and violating the state's Emergency Services Law, which requires hospitals to provide care "necessary to relieve or eliminate the emergency medical condition."

A spokesman for the hospital said in a statement to ABC News that "Providence is deeply committed to the health and wellness of women and pregnant patients and provides emergency services to all who walk through our doors in accordance with state and federal law. We are heartbroken over Dr. Nusslock's experience earlier this year."

"This morning was the first Providence had heard of the California attorney general's lawsuit, and we are currently reviewing the filings to understand what is being alleged," continued the spokesman. "Because this case is in active litigation and due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment on the matter," the spokesperson added.

In his remarks, Bonta bemoaned the U.S. Supreme Court's recent refusal to qualify abortion as among the varieties of "stabilizing care" required of every hospital with an emergency department participating in Medicare under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act.

Without such a federal mandate conflating stability with the termination of human life, Bonta indicated that "states like California have to rely on their own state laws to protect pregnant patients."

Bonta has not only worked to combat policies ostensibly designed to protect life in his state but in other states as well. Last year, he joined New York Attorney General Letitia James in leading a coalition to back the Biden-Harris administration's challenge to Idaho's popular and democratically passed pro-life law. They failed.

Bonta also sued Heartbeat International last year and a chain of crisis pregnancy centers over their promotion of medical abortion reversal. That case has yet to be decided.

Iconoclasts tore down a Columbus statue in Providence, Rhode Island. The defiant mayor of its new hometown can't be happier: 'He's here.'

Christopher Columbus' four transatlantic voyages opened the way for European exploration of the Americas. While once held in high regard for his daring and ambition — such that counties, cities, and towns across the United States were named after him — in recent years, he has been subjected to routine defamation and denunciations by leftists.

As part of this ongoing anti-Western campaign, iconoclasts have sought to deface and raze various Columbus statues. The 15th-century Italian's statue in Providence, Rhode Island, was no exception. The city saw fit to tear down the monument amid the costly BLM riots in 2020.

The historic statue, which is over a century old, has since found a home in a town unembarrassed by its history.

Joseph Polisena Jr., the mayor of Johnston, Rhode Island, noted in a Sept. 26 post on X, "He's here."

"A huge thank you to all the companies that donated their time and resources to get this done," wrote Polisena. "Our Columbus Day event will be on Monday, October 9 at 11am."

— (@)

What's the background?

The 6,000-pound Columbus statue had stood at Elmwood and Reservoir Avenues in Providence since 1893.

In the lead-up to the 2020 BLM riots, vandals took to splashing the statue with red paint, on at least one occasion spray-painting, "Stop celebrating genocide," reported the Associated Press.

After the statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee was torn down in Richmond, Virginia, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City announced its plan to remove a statue of President Theodore Roosevelt, and radicals tore down the statue of abolitionist Hans Christian Heg in Madison, Wisconsin — just three of the hundreds of monuments toppled nationwide — Democrats in Rhode Island figured they would similarly go farther than red paint and blood libels.

The Providence Journal reported that former Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza announced the statue's removal in June 2020, noting that a six-member committee would subsequently help the city determine what to do with it.

Protesters chanted, "Take it down! Take it down!" as a crane removed the statue and set it down on a flatbed truck.

— (@)

The historic monument was placed in storage for well over a year.

Ray Rickman, who headed the committee advising the city on what to do with the statue, said, "Columbus is not to be respected if you pay any attention," reported WJAR-TV.

Elorza made clear the statue wouldn't be returning to its former spot, saying, "It's either insulting to a certain group or it's going to get destroyed. And if it doesn’t get destroyed, it's going to take a lot of resources from the city to keep it from being destroyed, and we still can't guarantee it."

Defying the iconoclasts

Former Providence Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to Malta Joseph Paolino Jr. ultimately bought the statue for $50,000 after it had been left to gather dust, reported the Providence Journal.

Paolino understood that the statue was "a symbol of Italian culture," which he did not want to see melted down and turned into scrap metal.

Paolino subsequently reached out to see whether Johnston, a town of roughly 30,000, would take it. After all, 49.5% of Johnston's residents reportedly have Italian heritage, and its mayor had previously indicated he'd make a home for the statue.

Johnston Mayor Polisena ultimately seized upon the former mayor's offer, stressing Columbus is a "very important figure for Italian-Americans"; a historic figure who "really ushered in the modern era ... the age of discovery."

While acknowledging that nobody is perfect, Polisena said, "I don't judge people who lived 500 years ago based on modern standards. I'm sure 500 years from now, people will look back on some of the things we did and say, 'I can't believe they did that.'"

The mayor noted that the reactions to the statue have so far been positive, but that prospective critics can rest assured that no tax money was spent on the statue.

The Associated Press indicated leftists farther afield are already fuming.

Harrison Tuttle, a failed Democratic candidate for state Senate and current resident of the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC, said, "You don't have to be Indigenous to understand the harm that Christopher Columbus inflicted. ... To see it go back up is really tone deaf to all the progress we made just three years ago."

Johnston's Columbus Day event is unlikely to be a one-off.

"I'm hoping to make it an annual event," said the mayor. "People should learn about him, the good and the bad."

'Miraculous': Cop narrowly survives 120 mph car crash caught on camera

A Fairfax County Police officer had a brush with death Monday, only he proved too quick for the reaper.

An unnamed officer from the Sully District Station pulled over the driver of a gray 2012 BMW 750, which he caught speeding nearly 13 mph over the 50 mph limit on the Fairfax County Parkway, according to the FCPD.

The officer approached the driver on the passenger's side of the vehicle, which police later told reporters proved "consequential."

While addressing the driver of the BMW 750, smoke billowed up on the far side of the highway, several lanes and a grassy median over.

Another driver, similarly behind the wheel of a BMW — this time a 2018 M3 — had lost control of his vehicle while coming around the bend. Roughly five seconds later, it closed the distance and smashed into the stationary BMW and the officer's cruiser.

"It’s just miraculous that we’re not talking under different circumstances," said Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis. "By all accounts, this should have resulted in much worse outcomes than it did, so thank God for that."

Dashcam footage of the incident shows the officer reacting to the distant squeal of tires and rushing to the rear of the vehicle.

Unlike the BMW the officer had pulled over on the right shoulder, the striking vehicle that nearly claimed his life was going "well over" 120 mph — more than double the speed limit.

“The car involved in that collision yesterday was a whole lot of car for an inexperienced driver," Davis later told reporters. "It was going way too fast. It was a rocket, and then it became a missile."

The careening vehicle, reportedly piloted by a 17-year-old, spun prior to making contact, such that its rear bumper was the first portion to strike. The car then swung around nose-first into the gap between the officer's cruiser and the rear of the BMW 750.

The officer can be seen leaping away from the stationary BMW as the force of the initial impact jerked it backward, then slamming the hood of the striking vehicle as it sparked by.

As the twisted metal and shattered glass settled, the 13-year veteran found himself with everything still intact.

Without missing a beat, he circled back to the wreck and radioed for rescue.

Davis said his officer's "grace under pressure was calm, cool, collected."

According to police, all involved — the two passengers in the BMW 750, the 17-year-old in the M3, and the officer — only suffered minor injuries.

The driver responsible for the crash was charged with reckless driving.

VIDEO: Dirt bike, ATV riders drag mother from car and brutally beat her while child is in vehicle during road rage attack

Video shows a brutal attack on a mother by ATV and dirt bike riders in Providence, Rhode Island. The violent attack occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday night after an alleged road rage incident involving a group of ATV and dirt bike drivers.

"When the bikes did not move after the light turned green, she honked at them, and then turned onto Valley Street," the Boston Globe reported, citing a police report. "A few minutes later, while she was stopped at a traffic light at Zone Street, the riders allegedly came up from behind her and surrounded her vehicle, preventing her from moving forward."

A 35-year-old mother was dragged out of her vehicle by a few of the riders, according to Providence Police. The group of about 10 off-road vehicle drivers are seen on video viciously pummeling the defenseless mother with kicks and punches as her 8-year-old child was stranded in the car nearby. The riders then fled the crime scene.

The violent attack was captured on a cellphone video, which was posted online by WLNE-TV.

Shyanne Boisvert, 24, was arrested Thursday night in connection with the attack, according to Providence Police. Boisvert was charged with one count of simple assault and one count of disorderly conduct, according to Deputy Chief of Police Commander Thomas A. Verdi. She was held pending arraignment.

The Cranston Police Department tipped off Providence Police of Boisvert's whereabouts because of a previous arrest. Boisvert was arrested in January for reportedly pushing a police officer after about 30 motorcycles and ATVs were speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. As the officer handcuffed Boisvert, another driver was arrested and accused of running over the cop's legs with his ATV before fleeing and later crashing into a police cruiser. Another member of the group was arrested and accused of leading police on a chase and striking a passing car.

Providence Councilman David Salvatore of Ward 14 demanded a "stop to this senseless violence."

"As local leaders, we owe it to our community to create systems which ensure that our city is a safe place to live and work. A woman driving in her car with her infant child should not have to fear being a victim of brutal physical violence," Salvatore said in a statement. "The gun violence, the physical attacks, and reckless behavior of individuals in our city have resulted in grief, loss, and fear in our community. It is time for the city to take decisive action to put a stop to this senseless violence and better serve the people trying to make a home in the city of Providence."

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza called the attack "awful."

"We had an awful incident in our city last night that left a young woman shaken and injured. We will continue to dedicate all our available resources to getting these illegal ATVs off our streets and to bring those responsible to justice," Elorza wrote on Twitter. "Our police department has seized and destroyed over 200 bikes and we will continue to pull over and arrest people who are using these bikes illegally."

Providence Mayor Signs Order to Pursue 'Reparations Process' for Black, Indigenous Groups

Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor Jorge Elorza (D) on Wednesday signed an executive order to pursue a "reparations process” for African-Africans and indigenous people.
