Fox News anchor guts 'fallacy' narrative that Biden pushed for months over record-high gas prices: 'The war is still raging'

Fox News anchor John Roberts exposed the fallacy in President Joe Biden's narrative that blames Russian President Vladimir Putin for high gas prices.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Biden blamed record-high gas prices and even the inflation crisis on Putin, infamously dubbing the economic woes as "Putin's price hike."

Now that gas prices are dropping, however, the Biden administration is unashamedly taking credit for the drop, saying Biden is responsible for relief at the gas pump.

What happened on Fox News?

If Putin was responsible for gas prices skyrocketing, what does it mean, then, that gas prices are dropping despite the war in Ukraine still raging on? That was the question Roberts presented to senior Biden adviser Amos Hochstein.

"The war in Ukraine is still raging and prices are coming down. What about this idea that this was Putin’s price hike?" Roberts asked. "Many people say that's a fallacy because the war is still raging and the prices are coming down."

Hochstein, however, claimed that "it's not a fallacy."

According to Hochstein, gas prices were going up because "Putin started intervening in Europe," alleging the "main increase in prices" began when "Putin started to intervene in the markets in the early fall of last year."

"But they were going up before that," Roberts interjected.

"No, no, they actually weren't," Hochstein claimed. "That's just factually not true."

Gas prices were, in fact, increasing before last fall. When Biden took office in January 2021, the average price of gas was under $2.50 per gallon, steadily rising throughout Biden's presidency before spiking this spring.

When Hochstein finally addressed Roberts' main question, he of course attributed decreasing gas prices to actions taken by the Biden administration

"Now, 'Why are they going down if the war is still raging?' It's a great question," Hochstein said. "The answer is because we’ve actually taken a lot of different actions in order to bring the prices down. Unfortunately, we live in an era where we want to have instant gratification that when you take an action you see the reaction immediately — sometimes it takes time in the market."

Those actions, according to Hochstein, include Biden's decision to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and Saudi Arabia increasing its production by a meager figure.

However, GasBuddy petroleum analyst Patrick DeHann has explained that oil from the SPR is not "actively pushing prices down," but rather "preventing prices from escalating more substantially."

Biden admin torched over 'embarrassing and shameful' messaging on inflation

A senior aide on President Joe Biden's administration got torched online after an "embarrassing and shameful" attempt to deflect criticism about skyrocketing inflation.

Jesse Lee, the senior advisor for communications to the National Economic Council, accused Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida of being in "lockstep" with Russian President Vladimir Putin over his criticism of Biden's policies.

"Putin and @SenRickScott fully in lockstep in blaming Biden for Putin’s Price Hike. So surprising," read Lee's tweet sent on Tuesday with screenshots of Scott's critiques.

While the Biden administration has tried to blame inflation on everything from greedy meat conglomerates to the pandemic, polling shows that more Americans believe Biden and his policies are to blame for inflation.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki has also tried to coin the phrase, "Putin's price hike" in an attempt to deflect the criticism.

Many took to social media to excoriate Lee and the Biden administration for the bizarre messaging.

"This is embarrassing and shameful messaging coming from the White House. It's time for President Biden and his advisors to start taking responsibility for their failed policies and out-of-control spending over the last 15 months," responded Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina.

"The Biden Administration says concern about inflation is being "fully in lockstep" with Putin. No wonder inflation keeps getting worse," replied Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

"According to the Biden WH & their aides, if you blame them for the skyrocketing inflation & energy prices, you’re an agent of Russia & a Putin puppet. Based on that logic, the WH is saying more than 60% of America is in lockstep with Putin. That should work well in the midterms," said Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida (R).

Polls show that Democrats are likely headed to heavy electoral losses in the midterm elections due to high inflation and other failures of the Biden administration.

CNN host calls out Biden for narrative on gas price crisis: 'Americans just don’t buy that'

CNN host Abby Phillip called out President Joe Biden on Sunday for repeatedly refusing to accept responsibility for the historic surge of gas prices.

On Friday, Biden celebrated the positive jobs report, which showed the economy added more than 400,000 jobs in March. However, the report is a misleading indicator of economic health because employment remains 1.6 million jobs below pre-pandemic levels, according to government data.

What happened?

During a panel discussion on CNN's "Inside Politics Sunday," Axios reporter Hans Nichols described any positive news about the economy as "largely irrelevant" because of inflation and high gas prices, and Phillip agreed.

"There’s one number that they can’t really change right now. And that is what the placard says at the local gas station, and that number is high and that's the daily jobs report that voters, Americans, consumers see every day," Nichols said. "And there's nothing the White House can do about it, other than bring down the price of gasoline."

"And maybe blame Putin," Phillip quipped, before beginning to criticize Biden for calling the gas price surge the "Putin price hike."

"Look," Nichols interjected, "when I’ve passed gas stations that say ‘blame Putin’ more than they say ‘Let’s go Brandon,’ I’ll know the White House has been successful in messaging."

Phillip responded by calling Nichols' observation "fascinating," and she brought attention to polling that proves Biden's messaging has failed.

"Take a look at this Quinnipiac poll. Americans just don’t buy that this is related to the war in Ukraine, and most of it, frankly, is not: 41% say it’s Biden’s policies, just 24% say the war in Ukraine, 24% also say the oil and gas companies are raising prices," Phillip explained

"But the White House is trying to do both — blame Putin, blame the oil and gas companies — but Americans just don’t agree," she observed.

The fact that Americans blame Biden for economic problems is electorally disastrous for Democrats.

Polling overwhelmingly shows that Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, and thus they are looking to Republicans, as indicated by generic ballot polling for the 2022 midterm elections, for solutions.

In fact, NBC News anchor Chuck Todd predicted last week that Democrats will face a "shellacking" in the upcoming elections because of voter sentiment toward the state of the economy and direction of the country.

House Democrat declares it is 'un-American' to blame Biden for gas crisis: 'This is Putin's fault'

Democratic Rep. Kim Schrier claimed Monday that bucking the Biden administration's narrative on the intensifying gas price crisis is "un-American."

What is the narrative?

The Biden administration launched a full-court press last week blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin for soaring gas prices and out-of-control inflation.

The problem, of course, is that inflation rates were already at historic highs and gas prices were already sky-high before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February.

What did Schrier say?

During an interview with journalist Brandi Kruse, the Washington Democrat regurgitated the Biden administration's talking points and charged that dissenters are "un-American."

"I believe a couple things: Right now, in the last two weeks, this is Putin. You should be blaming Putin if anybody for this," Schrier said. "To not blame Putin, first of all, is denying reality, and second, frankly, I think is un-American."

"So, this is Putin's fault," she declared.

Strangely, Schrier then immediately blamed the COVID-19 pandemic and supply problems — just as the Biden administration did before Putin invaded Ukraine.

"Before this because people were already suffering at the gas pump before this, right? We saw an increase of over $1/gallon over the past year and a half or so, that can be blamed realistically on— during the pandemic, when people were not going to work and driving was down, gas prices were down," she claimed. "As demand increased and rigs had not yet been turned on, there was a supply-demand issue like with everything else in this country, and that was to blame."

While Biden has abdicated any responsibility for the problem with gas prices and vulnerable Democratic lawmakers have indicated they will happily repeat Biden talking points, Biden recently bragged about dropping gas prices.

"I was able to bring it down 12 cents a gallon and will come down more, I believe," Biden said in December 2021.

The national average gas price as of Tuesday afternoon is $4.31 per gallon, according to AAA. That figure is down four cents from Monday, but still up since last week.
