Black woman charged with hate crimes after reportedly calling white arresting officer 'racist a** mother******,' racial slur

A black Louisiana woman was charged with hate crimes after she was accused of calling a white Baton Rouge police officer who arrested her over the weekend a "racist a** mother******" and a racial slur, WVLA-TV reported.

Crystal Harris, 43, of Baton Rouge, was arrested Sunday and also was charged with illegal use of the 911 emergency communication system, resisting a police officer with force or violence, public intimidation and retaliation, false communication with the intent to cause an emergency response, and misrepresentation during booking, the station said.

Harris during the transport reportedly 'made multiple comments about the officer being white and that was the reason for her arrest,' the station said, citing the affidavit. They included calling the officer a 'racist a** mother******' and a 'union [N-word] boy,' WVLA reported.

Police dispatchers reportedly told the responding officer that Harris “had consistently been calling in on 911 demanding an officer come out stating that she would keep calling until one arrived on scene,” WVLA said, citing the affidavit. Dispatchers also told the officer that Harris was “very aggressive towards them during the calls," which are recorded, the station said.

The officer arrived at the scene in the 1100 block of Spanish Town Road around 6:30 a.m., WVLA said.

Turns out the same officer brought Harris to the same location previously, the station said, adding that Harris reportedly was attempting to retrieve her belongings from an apartment complex. The affidavit indicated that the officer previously advised Harris “to call the constable’s office to set a time to recover her belongings if she was not able to do so today," WVLA noted.

During the officer's Sunday encounter with Harris, the officer found her outside the complex and told her no one would help her break into the locked unit, the station said, adding that she previously had been provided with instructions on how to appropriately handle the issue.

WVLA reported that Harris was arrested at the scene on charges of misusing 911 and intimidating dispatchers, placed into a police vehicle, and transported to a first district booking site.

Harris during the transport reportedly “made multiple comments about the officer being white and that was the reason for her arrest," the station said, citing the affidavit. They included calling the officer a “racist a** mother******" and a “union [N-word] boy," WVLA reported. In addition, she reportedly said her arrest “wasn’t proper protocol," the station noted.

More from WVLA:

Harris let the officer know she would not get out of the vehicle and, at first, did not do so.

During transport, she reportedly dared the officer “to put hands on her” and, once at the booking site, did not let herself be shackled and led into the holding area.

BRPD said the officer had to guide Harris to the holding area. She reportedly refused to be fingerprinted multiple times, according to the affidavit.

Harris on Sunday was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison; jail records examined Wednesday morning indicate she's still there.

Anything else?

Baton Rouge police in 2016 arrested a 35-year-old woman named Crystal Harris for calling 911 11 times, WBRZ-TV reported. The station said she repeatedly called 911 without requiring medical or police assistance; on the tenth call she was told that she would be arrested if she made another nonemergency 911 call. She was charged with illegal use of 911 and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, WBRZ said.

WaPost slides offensive remark against Clarence Thomas into 'news' report: 'Why don't they just call him an Uncle Tom?'

A Washington Post report on a top Democratic lawmaker's influence over President Joe Biden's next Supreme Court nominee denigrated Justice Clarence Thomas, the court's only black justice, with a racially charged reference.

The Post referred to Thomas as "the Black justice whose rulings often resemble the thinking of White conservatives," dismissing all of his personal convictions and legal philosophy as merely co-opted from white people.

The report, authored by White House reporter Cleve Wootson Jr. and congressional reporter Marianna Sotomayor, covers House Majority Whip Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) and his advocacy for U.S. District Judge J. Michelle Childs to be Biden's nominee to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court. Childs, a federal judge from South Carolina, is feared by some progressives to be one of the more moderate of Biden's possible nominees.

The derogatory reference to Thomas — the only reference in the lengthy article — comes after a quote from Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), a friend and ally of Clyburn's who assured the Washington Post that no one believes a judicial nominee supported by Clyburn would turn out to be a secret conservative on the court.

“Nobody that I’m aware of feels that opposing Clyburn’s nomination would be the wise thing to do,” Thompson told the Post. "If you know that a person has been vetted by Jim Clyburn, you know that person won’t go to the court and end up being a Clarence Thomas."

The Post explained that Thompson was "referring to the Black justice whose rulings often resemble the thinking of White conservatives."

That offensive description of Thomas was wholly an invention of the reporters. Thompson said no such thing, nor did he even imply that by his remarks, although he has previously called Thomas an "Uncle Tom."

Some commentators accused the Washington Post of doing the same thing in spirit.

"Why don't they just call him an Uncle Tom?" commented Jeff Jacoby, an op-ed columnist with the Boston Globe who criticized the Post article on Twitter.

This is journalism? Other conservatives piled on the Post, including Sen. Mike Lee (Utah).

N-word, threat found in porta-potty at Facebook construction site; all 1,300 workers sent home; $50,000 reward offered to find culprit

After the N-word and a threat were found scrawled in a porta-potty at a Facebook data center construction site in Utah, all 1,300 workers were sent home and a $50,000 reward was offered to identify the guilty party, KUTV-TV reported.

What are the details?

The message on the door facing the inside of the porta-potty in Eagle Mountain reads, "Kill a ****** day 11/29," the station said.

Upon discovery of the slur and threat, Mortenson Construction told its 1,300 construction workers about the graffiti and elected to send them home last Monday as a precautionary measure, authorities told KUTV.

What did Facebook have to say?

"Meta, formerly Facebook, has zero tolerance for any racist acts," a Facebook spokesperson said in regard to the graffiti, according to the station. "While this is a challenge facing the entire industry, we're working with our general contractors to implement measures that will help prevent them at any of our construction sites."

The Eagle Mountain Data Center is one of 17 such Facebook facilities worldwide, KSTU-TV reported.

The threat wasn't directed at a specific person, and there is no credible evidence the threat will be acted upon, KUTV said, citing authorities. In addition, since the construction site is a secure area, authorities told the station the vandalism may be an inside job.

Mortenson Construction released the following statement regarding the incident, KUTV said:

"Mortenson's priority is the safety and welfare of our team members and all people on our projects. We are investigating bias-motivated graffiti found today on the Eagle Mountain project site. We strongly condemn any form of racism or bigotry, and we have a clear, zero-tolerance anti-harassment, anti-discrimination policy. Mortenson takes this matter very seriously and we reported it to local authorities.

"We stopped work today to immediately and directly address this situation with team members and project partners, underscore our team's anti-harassment policy, and restate our expectations for conduct on site. There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the individual(s) responsible.

"Mortenson and Meta, formerly Facebook, are committed to creating a culture of inclusion, fostering a diverse workforce, and to maintaining an environment where dignity and respect for everyone on our project is paramount."

Anything else?

After Sgt. Spencer Cannon — public information officer with the Utah County Sheriff's Office — tweeted about the incident, one commenter replied "white lives matter."

With that, Cannon answered back, "But we must recognize the fact that people aren't generally writing bathroom wall graffiti that says 'Kill a cracker day 11/29.' So in that light your statement is insensitive at the very least and should be kept to yourself."

Colorado Rockies 'update' accusation that fan used 'racial slur,' but neglect to offer an apology

The Colorado Rockies organization has rescinded their accusation that a fan attending Sunday's game with the Miami Marlins hurled a racial epithet at one of Miami's black players.

What is the background?

The Rockies released a statement Sunday night condemning a fan who purportedly screamed a racial slur at Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson, who is black.

The Rockies organization released the statement, despite acknowledging they were still investigating the alleged incident of racism and did not yet have all of the facts.

The statement said:

The Colorado Rockies are disgusted at the racial slur by a fan directed at the Marlins' Lewis Brinson during the ninth inning of today's game. Although the subject was not identified prior to the end of the game, the Rockies are still investigating this incident. The Rockies have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination, and any fan using derogatory language of any kind will be ejected and banned from Coors Field.

The purported incident was enflamed by social media users, like USA Today baseball columnist Bob Nightengale. Despite not having all the facts, Nightengale urged his more than 280,000 Twitter followers to "find" the man accused of yelling a racial slur and to "put him in jail without the right to ever attend a sporting event."

Even the Major League Baseball Players Association condemned the "abhorrent racism animus displayed."

But what actually happened?

Less than 24 hours later, the Colorado Rockies released a statement acknowledging that, in fact, there was no incident of racism.

Instead, video evidence proved the fan in question was yelling at the Rockies' mascot, whose name is "Dinger."

"After a thorough investigation that included calls, emails and video clips from concerned fans, media and broadcast partners, the Colorado Rockies have concluded that the fan was indeed yelling for Rockies mascot Dinger in hopes of getting his attention for a photo, and there was never any racial slur that occurred," the Rockies said.

The team added, "The Rockies remain dedicated to providing an inclusive environment for all fans, players and guests at Coors Field, and any fan using derogatory language of any kind will be ejected from Coors Field."

— Colorado Rockies (@Rockies) 1628536233.0

As ESPN reported, the fan's shouting did not attract attention from players on the field despite being loud enough that both team's broadcasts picked up his shouts.

Although the Rockies admitted they were wrong, the organization did not offer the unidentified fan an apology.

What did Brinson say?

The Marlins outfielder addressed the media before Monday's game, explaining that he has reviewed footage of the fan and disagrees with the Rockies' conclusion.

"So I watched the video at least 50 times in the past 15-16 hours," Brinson said, the Associated Press reported. "I watched it a lot, especially when I heard that he said Dinger instead of the N-word.'

"I personally — this is again my personal opinion — I personally keep hearing the N-word. It's not that I want to hear it, I never want to hear it. Personally I've never been called that in person to my face on the baseball field, outside the baseball field, ever, so I don't know what my reaction would be if I got called that," he said. "But to now, saying that again, I haven't talked to the Rockies or that fan personally. If that's the case, then I'm sorry for any backlash or anything he's getting right now."

Anything else?

Nightengale responded to the update by saying, "I sincerely apologize for jumping to the wrong conclusion."

However, Nightengale justified his amplification of the purported incident of racism by adding, "Unfortunately, after personally seeing the racism family/friends endure every damn day, it was too easy to believe it happened again."

Still, as TheBlaze's Leon Wolf pointed out, the mea culpas could have been easily avoided. "The idea that, in 2021, a fan could have been yelling the N-word repeatedly loud enough to be picked up by TV cameras and there wouldn't have been a major commotion in the stands/lots of cellphone videos of it is ridiculous. Media should have known better."

Black man caught on video repeatedly calling Asian cop a 'ch**k' in front of other officers, excuses it by saying 'black people can't be racist'

A black man was caught on video repeatedly calling an Asian New York City police officer a "f***in' ch**k" in front about six other officers on a street in Washington Square Park over the weekend, the New York Post reported.

What are the details?

The paper said the officers were in the area due to protests in the park, and the video begins with the furious man standing on a sidewalk and facing down an officer in the street and using profanity while repeatedly using an Asian slur against him.

The Post said the individual taking video was livestreaming from the park and turned the camera away when the officer approached the man and apparently told him to stay on the sidewalk.

"I'm on the sidewalk, what you gonna do? What's your name?" the man asked, according to the paper, although those questions can't be heard on the below video.

But when the clip starts, the man can be heard saying, "You're not even from this country. You piece of s**t! You f***in' ch**k! You f***in' ch**k! You f***in' ch**k! He's a ch**k! Get the f*** outta here, you ch**k! Get the f*** outta here!"

Another officer tells the man to stay on the sidewalk and motions the other officers — including the Asian officer — to keep on walking down the street. But the "ch**k" references keep coming.

At one point a white man on a bicycle rides by the scene and rips into the black man for using a racial slur.

"Why you calling people ch**ks, man? F*** you!" the white man on the bicycle yells.

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYCPBA

"Suck my d***!" the black man replies.

"No, f*** you!" the white man shoots back as he's further down the sidewalk.

As the black man continues to tell the white man to "suck my d***," the white man yells several times to "stop calling people ch**ks, man, that's f***ed up!"

As the white man rides away, he calls the black man a "racist f***" and a "racist piece of s**t."

'Black people can't be racist'

But the black man yells back that "black people can't be racist" — and continues to berate and use slurs and profanity against the Asian officer while following the group of police and trying to bait them: "What you wanna do? What you wanna do?"

Apparently the Asian officer told him to watch his mouth because the man replied, "Watch my mouth for what, you ch**k? Watch my mouth for what, you ch**k? ... Go look me up, you f***in' ch**k! ... I work for the state, you piece of s**t! I pay your f***in' salary! You f***in' bitch ass motherf***er! I'm out here all night, by myself — I ain't gotta have 100 people with me! ... How 'bout that?"

By the end of the clip when the police were gone, the man bizarrely claims that his tirade didn't "go out to all Asian people."

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYCPBA

He adds, "Lemme get this straight. I'm talkin' about the f***in' cops. ... The cops are not our friends. You understand? I wanna get that clear 'cuz [the white man on the bicycle] rolled by and said, 'Yo, you racist.' Black people cannot be racist!"

What did the NYPD have to say?

"Each day, NYPD officers are expected to maintain a level of professionalism under an array of difficult circumstances," a police spokeswoman told the Post. "In this instance, an Asian police officer was subjected to an ugly onslaught of racial slurs and maintained his composure. However, it is disturbing to see this type of language used against any Asian person in light of the disturbing increase of Asian hate crimes citywide."

The Asian Jade Society — NYPD Asian officers who "share common interests, represent the Asian community within the department with a unified front, and provide support for one another" — responded in a tweet that it's "appalled by another one of these blatant attacks of derogatory slurs and pure racism directed towards one of our own Asian officers."

The paper added that it wasn't clear if the man yelling in the video was among those who clashed with and were forced out of the park by police.
