Video: Man screams racial slurs outside NJ residence, encourages people to come to his home. More than 100 people show up.

More than 100 protesters showed up at the home of a man who reportedly shouted racial slurs in front of a Mount Laurel, New Jersey, residence, the Washington Post reported.

The man, identified as 45-year-old Edward Cagney Mathews, was reportedly caught on camera calling his black neighbor the N-word and a "monkey" before challenging and taunting onlookers to come to his home.

What are the details?

The Post reported that Mathews gave out his address to the person filming him and suggested they visit him at his home.

"Bring whoever!" Mathews shouted after he told a neighbor to "learn your laws" and that the area is "not Africa."

"Whoever," according to the report, included more than 100 protesters who ended up at the man's residence in the coming days.

"By Monday morning, dozens of protesters had gathered outside Mathews's door, chanting 'We want Edward!'" the report noted.

Police showed up at Mathews' home and began guarding the property as protesters continued to filter in.

By the end of the evening, more than 100 protesters had gathered at his home.

Mathews, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, emerged at one point during the gathering and delivered an apology to no avail.

"As he faced charges for his behavior in the video, including harassment and biased intimidation, police later escorted Mathews out of his home with his hands behind his back," the Inquirer added. "Protesters cheered, while some hurled food and water bottles at him. The incident followed more than a year of nationwide protests over the treatment of black people and race relations in the United States."

One protester told the Inquirer, "He said to pull up. We pulled up. We're not going to tolerate this anymore."

Mathews — who is now facing charges of assault, harassment, bias intimidation, and trespassing — told the Inquirer that his tirade was a result of being intoxicated and stemmed from a long-running HOA dispute.

"I certainly wasn't expecting an encounter like that and certainly wasn't expecting to disrespect anybody," he said. "Let me be clear: That is no excuse for what I said, but I lost my temper."

The Mount Laurel Police Department in a statement said that the department does not tolerate such incidents "in any form."

"This type of behavior is totally unacceptable," the statement read. "We can assure our residents that incidents like this are thoroughly investigated and those who commit such offenses will be held accountable for their actions."

What else?

On Monday, NJ.com reported that Mathews has a history of harassing black neighbors.

One female neighbor said that Mathews has "continually harassed" her.

Mathews could face additional charges pending an investigation into the incidents.

"Those gathered in the usually quiet neighborhood said Mathews' racist behavior has been an ongoing issue in the community," the outlet reported.

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said that Mathews' neighbor, seen in the video, "showed incredible restraint with someone spewing awful, vile things in his face and assaulting him."

“He didn't deserve that. None of the residents deserve that. No one should ever feel unsafe in their home," Coffina added.

David HernandezMarcus Sibley, president of the Southern Burlington NAACP, told the outlet that Mathews has been notorious for harassing black area residents for at least the last three years.

“The main thing that makes you shake your head is how in the world has this gone unaddressed," he said. "We're looking for reform. When we say that we feel intimidated, we feel like we're being hurt and harmed, we would love for the response to be 'This is wrong. This is inhumane. This is disrespectful, and we are going to prosecute at the fullest extent of the law, so other people learn this isn't how you treat people.'"

Black police officer fired for using N-word wants job back — and bigger question looms: Should race of employee using N-word figure in severity of discipline?

After Delvin White — a black officer with the Tampa Police Department — was fired earlier this month for using the N-word, students at the campus he patrolled were taken aback.

"I was confused and amazed," J'Lyn Green, a 16-year-old Middleton High School sophomore, told the Tampa Bay Times, adding that White is "good people."

"He shouldn't have used it," Green added to the paper, "but the punishment shouldn't have gone that far."

What's the background?

White — an eight-year veteran of the department who served as a school resource officer — used the N-word while on the phone and during a Nov. 30 arrest, the Times reported in a previous story, citing a disposition letter police released.

He was hit with "violations of policy that prohibit discriminatory conduct," the paper said, citing a news release.

The disposition letter said when White was confronted about his actions, he told his superior he didn't use the N-word in a derogatory fashion but rather as it's "commonly used in today's society as a means of shared culture and experiences among the African American community," the Times reported.

But Chief Brian Dugan said that "derogatory statements made by police officers jeopardize the trust that our department works to establish with our community. Tampa Police officers are held to a higher standard, and incidents like this negatively impact the entire law enforcement profession," the paper added.

Now what?

The Times said that White had built a rapport with students and staff at the school during his three years serving there. And while his supporters agree he should have been disciplined, they told paper that firing an "effective, beloved black officer at a school where nearly half the students are black" is "unfair and counterproductive."

The big question, according to the Times: Should there be different penalties depending on the race of the employee using the N-word and the context in which they use it?

The paper said White's supporters are calling for the chief to reinstate him, and White is appealing his termination to the city's Civil Service Board with support from the Tampa Police Benevolent Association. In addition, an online petition created by a Middleton student has attracted nearly 1,300 signatures, the Times noted.

More from the paper:

Yvette Lewis, president of the Hillsborough branch of the NAACP, is among those who say that use of the word should be looked at "holistically" and that White's offense is not as serious as a white person using the slur against a Black person.

Lewis, who said she has received "a ton of calls" in support of White, sees another factor behind the Black community's criticism of Dugan's decision.

"Black folks are looking at this like, white police officers have done us wrong, shot us dead in the street, they have mistreated us and still have their job, so why would you want to fire this man for saying a word?" Lewis said. "That's what I'm hearing."

Lavetta Sexil, J'Lyn Green's mother, told the Times that White cares a lot about the students.

"He treats them like they're his very own kids," she noted to the paper. "When J'Lyn went to high school, we had an issue where we thought he was skipping. Officer White kept a close eye on him and if he wasn't in class, he would let me know. We need officers like Officer White in our community."

Middleton student Anjali Bryant created a petition page at change.org titled, "Get Officer White his job back" — which reflects the opinion earlier noted by J'Lyn Green: White "did make a mistake, but the punishment was too harsh," the Times reported.

The page adds that "we feel that nothing Officer White said jeopardized the trust he has established in our community. The students at Middleton High School love Officer White and we know he feels the same based on his actions," the paper noted.

What else did the police chief have to say?

A complaint review board consisting of five sworn officers unanimously ruled that White violated a department policy on "professional responsibility and responsibility of enforcement" — but only two said he violated a city policy forbidding "discriminatory conduct" presumably in regard to the use of the N-word, the Times said.

The board sent a summary to Chief Dugan that said "no one was insulted, no damage was done to anyone's reputation, and the victim did not feel offended or disrespected," according to the paper.

But Dugan told the Times he still believed he had to fire White.

"People need to understand I can't fire a white officer and not fire a Black officer for saying that," he noted to the paper. "If you're going to go for restorative punishment for him, you have to do it for everyone in the future, no matter what color they are. The policy is pretty clear that unless there are mitigating circumstances, you're going to get terminated if you talk like that."

"My stance has to be color blind," Dugan added to the Times.

Black college professor weighs in

Neal Lester, an English professor at Arizona State University who is black, told the paper some black people say their N-word use culturally re-appropriates the slur and lessens its power — but he doesn't buy that.

Lester — who has designed and taught a course that traces the N-word's history from its origins to its use in pop culture — added to the Times that black people's use of the slur can't be separated from how white people used it for centuries to discriminate and oppress.

"You can't take the power out of that when it's still connected to racism, and if you internalize the racism, then white people don't have to use it because you use it among people who look like you," the professor told the paper, adding that he viewed White's body camera videos. "If [White] is using that with this young man he's upset with, where is the power taken out of that? And if he's talking disparagingly about a group of Black people, where has the power been taken out of that?"

Anything else?

Many Middleton students and some staff members wore white to school Monday to support White, who also was there:

"We're not condoning what I did, but we don't think I should have gotten terminated," White added to the Times. "I'm amazed by the support I've received and really want my job back so I can continue my work in the community."

Woman charged with hate crime after calling McDonald's manager 'stupid Mexican,' physically attacking him

A 40-year-old woman was charged with a hate crime after calling a McDonald's manager a "stupid Mexican" and physically attacking him while calling other employees "dumb Mexicans ... who don't know how to speak English," the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office said.

What are the details?

Authorities said Alena Jenkins was eating inside the Mountain View, California, restaurant just before 7 a.m. Saturday when employees asked her to wear a face mask.

After Jenkins' refusal to wear a mask following repeated requests, employees asked her to leave — and then Jenkins responded by saying to one employee, "[expletives deleted] Mexican! Go ahead and call the cops!" authorities said.

When the employee called police, Jenkins shoved a COVID-19 plexiglass shield and a sign at the employee, authorities said. She was also in violation of the restaurant's COVID-19 restrictions that prohibit patrons from dining inside the restaurant.

The store manager got involved and asked Jenkins to leave, after which she walked around the front counter and called the manager a "stupid Mexican" and punched him on the arm and shoulder, authorities said. Police said the employee she struck is Latino.

After police arrived, Jenkins called store employees "dumb Mexicans … who don't know how to speak English" as she spoke to officers, authorities said.

The hate crime charge against her as well as a battery charge are misdemeanors, authorities said. Police also said Jenkins, a transient, was in violation of probation and was taken to jail. According to jail records, Jenkins was not offered bail.

"Targeting people because of their perceived ethnicity is not just a shame, it's a crime," District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. "There is no excuse for hatred."

Police Chief Chris Hsiung added that "we will continue to hold those that commit crimes against others, simply based on their race, accountable. As I have said before, hate has no place in this community."

Music label indefinitely suspends country star Morgan Wallen — and radio stations drop his music — after video shows him using N-word

Big Loud Records — country singer Morgan Wallen's record label — has issued an indefinite suspension of Wallen after video surfaced of him using the N-word.

What are the details?

According to a Wednesday report from ABC News, Big Loud Records suspended 27-year-old Wallen for an indefinite period of time after the video emerged.

On Tuesday, TMZ released a video featuring Wallen — who was shouting vulgarities during an apparent "rowdy night out" — using the racial slur.

According to TMZ:

The country star and a group of buddies had just spent a night out in Nashville. When they arrived at Morgan's home at around midnight, they were extremely loud ... honking horns and talking loudly ... loud enough to piss off neighbors. One of the neighbors began recording the antics.

As Morgan appears to stumble toward his house, he tells someone to watch over a guy in his group. He says ... "take care of this "p****-ass mother******" — and then goes on to say, "take care of this p****-ass n*****" ... before finally heading in.

TMZ reported that the video was filmed on Sunday evening.

What did the music label do?

In a statement, Big Loud Records said, "In the wake of recent events, Big Loud Records has made the decision to suspend Morgan Wallen's contract indefinitely. Republic Records fully supports Big Loud's decision and agrees such behavior will not be tolerated."

According to the report, iHeartMedia and Entercom radio also announced that it has removed all of Wallen's music from its stations' playlists.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Entercom said, "In light of Morgan Wallen's recent use of a racial slur, we've discussed the incident with our Country brand leadership team and together have made the decision to remove Morgan's music from Entercom's playlists."

Viacom-owned CMT also suspended Wallen's music. In a Twitter post, CMT announced, "After learning of Morgan Wallen's racial slur late last night, we are in the process of removing his appearances from all our platforms. We do not tolerate or condone words and actions that are in direct opposition to our core values that celebrate diversity, equity & inclusion."

Wallen has since issued a public apology for the video, telling TMZ that his use of the word was "unacceptable and inappropriate."

"I'm embarrassed and sorry," he said in a statement. "I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better."

'Shut the f*** up, b***h!': Black Lives Matter militant gets in cop's face amid Portland street showdowns

There were some nasty scenes going down Thursday on the streets of Portland, Oregon, as Black Lives Matter militants faced off with supporters of police — and officers trying to keep the peace as well.

What are the details?

In one interaction caught on cellphone video, a Black Lives Matter activist — apparently a woman — tells off a male officer using decidedly profane language.

Holding her arm outward and touching the cop's chest, the white BLM militant gets furious at the officer: "Step the f*** back, ugly! S**t! You can't run up on people like that!" Then as he engages in the friendly chat, the militant shouts, "Shut the f*** up, bitch!"

After the militant turns and walks away, she shoves the arm of a black man recording the proceedings on cellphone — and he's justifiably annoyed that she apparently can get away with such an act while he insists he'd be charged with a crime if he did the same thing.

Here's the clip. (Content warning: Language):

More to the story

As it turns out, a longer video that precedes the latter outburst shows the white BLM militant with an angry, tearful black woman who complains to police that she was called the N-word and that such an act is a "hate crime."

Things heat up considerably when the officer — who gets the face-full of abuse from the white BLM militant in the latter video — informs the black woman that being called the N-word is not a crime.

"It should be, though!" the black woman yells back.

As the officer and the black woman continue to interact, the white BLM militant tells the cop, "Shut the f*** up! You're speaking beyond your limits, bro!" The cop ignores the slight and encourages both of them to go home.

As the black woman and the officer move closer to each other's faces, the white BLM militant repeatedly says, "Stop walking up on her, sir!" and tells other cops, "Hey! Get your man off of her! He is touching her!"

How it all started

There's also video of what led to the latter interactions with police.

The starting point — as noted previously — was showdowns between Black Lives Matter militants and supporters of police, referred to as Back the Blue.

And in one scene, the same black woman shown in the above clip starts arguing with a white woman about the proper way to wear a mask — and the black woman tells the white woman, "Shut up, cracker! Shut up, cracker!"

With that, the white woman gets furious about being called a "cracker" and yells back at the black woman using the N-word before walking away. The crowd reacts strongly to the N-word utterance.
