80-year-old man says he fought back after random attacker clobbered him in head in grocery store

An 80-year-old man said he fought back after a random attacker clobbered him in the head inside a Georgia grocery store late last month.

Felix Dessel told WAGA-TV the attack occurred while he was shopping for groceries in the Kroger at the intersection of LaVista and North Druid Hills Roads in Toco Hills in DeKalb County around lunchtime Aug. 22.

'I'm picking bananas, and somebody attacks me, and I was a little woozy from the shock.'

Dessel told the station a male hit him in the head with a can of soda, which left a "very big bump."

With that, Dessel ran toward the suspect and fought back, WAGA reported, citing a DeKalb County Police report.

Investigators said the suspect then threw multiple items at Dessel, the station reported, adding that Dessel said the suspect also threw punches and kicks.

However, Dessel noted to WAGA that when a Kroger employee saw what was happening, both he and the attacker were told to leave the store — and the suspect took off.

"I said, 'I'm not getting out of the store, I was just attacked,'" Dessel recounted to the station. "I'm picking bananas, and somebody attacks me, and I was a little woozy from the shock."

While the attack was caught on video, DeKalb County Police and Kroger declined to release it, WAGA reported, and investigators have not made any arrests.

The station noted the following statement from Kroger in regard to the incident: "The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority. We work with local law enforcement upon request in all ongoing investigations."

Dessel didn't need to visit a hospital after the attack, WAGA reported, but he said he believes more needs to be done to protect customers.

"They need to have security; something tragic is going to happen there," Dessel noted to the station. "I was able to overcome that, and I'm very happy about that. [The attacker] needs to be locked up, and he needs medical, mental help."

In the meantime, Dessel told WAGA he's having a "hard time going to sleep because I'm reviewing [the attack]. The bruises will go away, but [pointing to his head] this is a different story."

You can view a video report here about the incident, which includes an interview with Dessel.

Thug sucker punches actor Steve Buscemi in face — yet another broad-daylight, random attack on NYC street

A male sucker punched actor Steve Buscemi in the face last week in yet another broad-daylight, random attack on a New York City street.

Police told CBS News they responded to a 911 call about an assault around 11:48 a.m. Wednesday.

Buscemi "is OK and appreciates everyone's well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of NY."

The news network reported that officers were told an unidentified individual punched a 66-year-old man in the face in front of 369 3rd Avenue, the New York Police Department said last week in a news release that didn't name Buscemi; the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition for treatment of bruising, swelling, and bleeding to his left eye.

Buscemi's publicist on Sunday said the actor "is OK and appreciates everyone's well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of NY," CBS News added.

The NYPD said the suspect was "wearing a dark colored baseball style cap, blue T-shirt, black pants, white sneakers, and carrying a bookbag," the news network reported, adding that there were no arrests, and the investigation was continuing.

Buscemi is a beloved Brooklyn native and former New York City firefighter who rushed to the site of the World Trade Center after the 9/11 terror attacks to join his former fire company, Engine 55, the New York Post reported.

The veteran actor is well-known for roles in movies such as "Armageddon," “Fargo," “Reservoir Dogs," and "The Big Lebowski." The Post noted that Buscemi also received high praise for his work in the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”

Video: Mother, 10-year-old daughter repeatedly punched in random attack on Bronx subway train — while multiple people inches away do nothing to help them

An unidentified woman was caught on cellphone video repeatedly punching a mother and her 10-year-old daughter on a subway train in the Bronx while multiple people just inches away did nothing to help them.

What are the details?

Police told WNBC-TV the attack occurred Oct. 18 around 4:30 p.m. WCBS-TV reported that police just released new surveillance images of the suspect.

The 36-year-old mother and her daughter were on their way from from school and standing in a crowded northbound 5 train at the Westchester Avenue and Simpson Street station in the Longwood section, WNBC said.

Police told WNBC that's when the suspect began punching them in the face and mouth. Police said video taken by another passenger shows the woman punching the mother and daughter with a closed fist, WCBS reported.

The mother, who asked not to be identified, told WNBC she doesn't know what sparked the attack.

"She no say nothing to me, just she punch the head like crazy. Boom boom boom. No say nothing to me," the mother told WNBC and added that others on the train saw the attack take place but failed to help them.

The mother added to WNBC she didn't consider fighting back as her only mission was to shield her girl from the stranger's fists.

"Just like make the hug and say, 'No worries, mommy is here, I protect you, no worry,'" the mother added to WNBC.

What happened next?

WNBC said the attacker — described as a woman in her 40s, about about 5 feet 8 inches tall with short black hair, and last seen wearing a black jacket and black sunglasses — soon exited the train and ran off. WCBS added that the attacker is described as weighing about 215 pounds.

The mother and daughter were taken to a hospital where they were treated for their injuries, WNBC said. But the emotional fallout continues, as the mom told WNBC her little girl is still scared when she sees crowds.

Anything else?

An investigation is proceeding, WNBC said, adding that a cash reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. WCBS added that you submit a tip via the NYPD's Crime Stoppers website or via Twitter @NYPDTips and that all tips are kept confidential

Video: Thug throws 62-year-old nurse halfway down concrete steps in unprovoked attack. Then he tosses her farther down, appears to stomp on her head.

A man with a lengthy rap sheet was caught on surveillance video throwing a 62-year-old nurse down a flight of concrete steps at a Seattle train station earlier this month — and then he followed up the unprovoked attack by tossing her farther down the steps and apparently stomping on her head.

Alexander Jay, 40, was charged with second-degree assault in connection with the attack, KIRO-TV reported, citing charging documents from King County prosecutors.

What are the details?

The woman exited a train at the Chinatown-International District station and walked up the stairs March 2.

Surveillance video shows Jay running up the adjacent escalator and meeting her at the top:

He then throws the victim down the concrete stairs backward:

As the woman comes to a stop on the middle landing, Jay follows her down the stairs, grabs her, and throws her down the second set of stairs.

The woman grabs a railing, which prevents her from falling a far as she did the first time, but Jay is seen coming at her again and even appearing to stomp on her head.

Jay then walks back up the stairs and leaves the station, while a security guard jogs over to help the woman, who suffered three broken ribs and a broken clavicle, KIRO reported.

The Tri-City Herald said authorities located Jay the next day about a half-mile from the scene of the attack. Jay was booked on a Department of Corrections warrant, KIRO said.

Jay has many prior convictions in Washington, including burglary, theft, selling stolen property, and several instances of domestic violence, KIRO added, citing court documents.

The station added that Jay had prior convictions in California for theft, drug possession, auto theft, and burglary and that Washington courts have issued more than 15 bench warrants for him for failing to attend hearings — so the state asked for $150,000 bail in this latest case.

NEW: Prosecutors allege prolific offender Alexander Jay randomly attacked a nurse as she exited a light rail station in Seattle. She broke 3 ribs & her clavicle. Police say Jay is homeless. He has at least 22 convictions to his name. \n\nREAD THE DETAILS: https://mynorthwest.com/3390385/rantz-prolific-offender-accused-brutal-assault-media-ignores-homeless-race/\u00a0\u2026pic.twitter.com/BmgOLYtspJ

What else?

Conservative columnist and commentator Jason Rantz of KTTH-AM noted that police issued a public alert about the attack the same day it occurred: “The woman described the suspect as a black male, approximately 30 years old, 6 feet tall, thin build, wearing a grey sweatshirt, grey sweatpants, dirty white tennis shoes, and a dark grey or green puffy jacket. He also had a distinctive cross tattoo on his left cheek."

But Rantz said the Seattle Times published a story about the attack about 90 minutes after the public alert was issued and left out Jay's race: “The 62-year-old woman described the suspect as 6 feet tall with a thin build and who appeared to be in his 30s, police said. He had a cross tattooed on his left cheek, she said."

"The suspect’s race isn’t directly relevant to the crime," Rantz said. "There’s no suggestion he attacked his victim for being white. But the woke, race-obsessed Seattle Times made a curious decision to exclude the suspect’s race when he was out on the loose. The detail was relevant in the context of being used to help locate him."

Rantz added that neither KIRO nor the Herald mentioned that police said Jay is homeless.

"Is Jay’s status as homeless relevant to the story? Absolutely. Activists and politicians continue to pretend that Seattle’s homeless population isn’t dangerous; that they’re just like you or me, just one paycheck away from a life on the streets," Rantz said, adding that "too often, generally speaking, left-wing reporters and editors believe that if they label a criminal homeless, it’ll somehow define the entire homeless population. It’s a ridiculous position fueled by ideology, bias, and ignorance."

66-year-old viciously beaten with a bottle in a random attack in NYC caught on surveillance video

A 66-year-old man was injured in an unprovoked attack in New York City and it was caught on surveillance video released by the NYPD.

Police say that the attack occurred on Aug. 23 in broad daylight at the intersection of West 129th St. and Convent Avenue in Harlem.

The video shows a man walking with what appears to be a briefcase in one hand and a grocery bag with items inside in the other hand. Then another man runs up behind him and strikes him forcefully with a bottle.

Police say that the victim fell to the ground and was beaten several more times with the bottle by the assailant who fled soon afterward.

The victim suffered numerous injuries to his face and his head, but refused immediate medical attention.

Neighbors are shocked

Some neighbors in the area, like Amir Aalaam who works at a shelter for displaced families, were shocked by the video and said the neighborhood is generally safe and quiet.

"I can't believe that guy was hit over his head like that," he said. "That's just unjustifiable, and whoever is responsible for that, i hope they get apprehended as soon as possible."

But other neighbors said they were not surprised.

"I live in New York City, nothing don't shock me out here, trust me, nothing!" said a woman who works in the area.

Laundromat worker Dunia Diaz said she's always on the lookout for random attacks.

"You don't expect to come to work and be surprised with anything like that. It's scary. It's scary," Diaz said. "I'm always looking. I keep my eyes everywhere."

Police are seeking the public's help in identifying the attacker.
