Jim Jordan announces run for speaker of the House; targets law and order, federal spending, and border control

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio announced that he is running for speaker of the House, publishing a letter detailing his proposed focus, backed by recent accomplishments.

The Republican predominantly focused on the decay of public safety and rising crime across the country.

"The American people have entrusted us to lead in the House of Representatives," the congressman began. "We should be proud of what we have achieved together in these divided times. But our work is not done."

Jordan is the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and was also the first-ever chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, The Hill reported. The caucus includes fellow disruptors such as Reps. Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Andy Biggs (Ariz.), and Paul Gosar (Ariz.).

"Far-left progressive policies are destroying our communities, our security, and our future. We have soaring crime across the country. We have an administration with open-border policies that have caused chaos and left our country vulnerable," Jordan wrote.

"The Republican majority must continue to address the issues that matter to the American people. We must address rising crime in major cities and reject soft-on-crime, pro-criminal policies. We must get our fiscal house in order and reduce spending. ... We must do our constitutional oversight of the federal bureaucracy. ... And we must continue working to secure the border and protect our national security."

None
— Rep. Jim Jordan (@Rep. Jim Jordan) 1696433667

Jordan's policy-focused letter later boasted that he has helped deliver immigration enforcement, is conducting oversight, and has been "pushing for fiscal discipline [his] entire career."

“We are at a critical crossroad in our nation’s history. Now is the time for our Republican conference to come together to keep our promises to Americans. The problems we face are challenging, but they are not insurmountable. We can focus on the changes that improve the country and unite us in offering real solutions. But no matter what we do, we must do it together as a conference,” he wrote.

“I respectfully ask for your support for Speaker of the House of Representatives," the letter concluded.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky said that Jordan was his first choice for the speakership. "I support Jim Jordan for Speaker," he simply wrote on his X account.

Jim Banks from Indiana also threw his support behind Jordan, although House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is supporting Rep. Steve Scalise, who is expected to enter the race as well.

John Fetterman tells House Republicans who don't want to vote for spending bills to 'go hump a different leg'

John Fetterman tells House Republicans who don't want to vote for spending bills to 'go hump a different leg'

Senator John Fetterman (D-Penn.) told House Republicans that they need to bring their votes or "go hump another leg" in reference to passing spending bills.

During an interview with MSNBC on "All In with Chris Hayes," Fetterman was asked about disputes within the House Republican ranks involving the likes of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who is calling House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's leadership into question.

"The House looks like it's falling apart, you already got 17 'no' votes and that House Republican caucus saying 'we're not passing anything.' What do you think is happening here?" Hayes asked Fetterman.

"Truly I was very proud of my colleagues, because they're really about governance," the Pennsylvania senator began. "The House, the whatever they call themselves, Team America or whatever they call themselves, bring your vote, otherwise they need to go hump a different leg," Fetterman continued.

Fetterman: "The House, the whatever they call themselves Team America or whatever they call themselves, bring your vote otherwise they need to go hump a different leg."
— Greg Price (@Greg Price) 1695086662

Fetterman was also asked about the recent change to the Senate dress code, which has allowed him to work on the Senate floor in his typical T-shirt, shorts, or hooded-sweatshirt combinations that he is known for.

"I've heard that some people were upset about that, and they have been losing their mind," he replied. "Oh my God, you know, dogs and cats are living together — aren't there more important things we should be talking about rather than I dress like a slob?"

Fetterman was previously not allowed to appear on the Senate floor to cast votes in his usual attire and was reportedly forced to make his votes from the doorway of the senators' cloakroom before retreating back to where his attire was acceptable.

The new dress code does not apply to staff members.

— TheBlaze (@TheBlaze) 1695310097

"If those jagoffs in the House stop trying to shut our government down, and fully support Ukraine, then I will save democracy by wearing a suit on the Senate floor next week," Fetterman wrote on his X account.

Rep. Gaetz has made frequent statements in September 2023 that Speaker McCarthy is "out of compliance with the agreement" that allowed him to assume his role.

On this very floor in January, the whole world witnessed a historic contest for House Speaker.

I rise today to serve notice. Mr. Speaker, you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role. The path forward for the House of Representatives is to…
— Rep. Matt Gaetz (@Rep. Matt Gaetz) 1694536607

McCarthy had agreed in January 2023 to uphold a series of promises that involved holding votes on array of topics.

Votes on term limits for both representatives and senators, balancing the budget, and releasing all the footage from January 6, 2021, were all among the requirements from the Freedom Caucus to not block McCarthy from becoming speaker.

The White House prominently displayed a Pride flag, but a Republican is proposing a bill that would largely ban displaying non-American flags on federal property

Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas is proposing a bill to largely prohibit featuring flags other than the U.S. flag on federal property and buildings, according to Fox News Digital.

The outlet reported that the measure would allow for various exceptions, such as for the flag of a visiting diplomat's country and the flag of a lawmaker's state.

"It’s a sad state of affairs when the White House prioritizes their radical social agenda over patriotism," the senator said, according to Fox News Digital. "The American flag stands for liberty and justice for ALL and should never be undermined by anyone, especially the President of the United States."

"Old Glory must reign supreme as a symbol of our nation’s freedom that thousands of our servicemembers, and veterans have fought and died to protect," he noted, according to the outlet. "The One Flag For All Act ensures that the American Flag never gets sidelined for culture wars and political points and remains the sole symbol of our nation's freedom and sacrifices."

“The American flag should never be undermined. Old Glory must reign supreme as a symbol of our nation’s freedom that thousands of our servicemembers & veterans have fought and died to protect. It is time to ensure the only flag on display on federal property is the American flag.”
— Dr. Roger Marshall (@Dr. Roger Marshall) 1686781334

The White House recently earned criticism for prominently displaying a pro-LGBT flag on the White House with American flags hanging on either side.

In a tweet, Marshall described the move as a "disgrace."

“This is a disgrace.

Not only is it in breach of US Flag Code, but it’s a glaring example of this White Houses’ incompetence and insistence on putting their social agenda ahead of patriotism.”
— Dr. Roger Marshall (@Dr. Roger Marshall) 1686503543

BlazeTV host Chad Prather blasted the move. "This is DISGRACEFUL. Why is the AMERICAN flag surrounding the pride flag?? This nonsense has to end!!!" he tweeted.

GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas also decried the White House's move, saying of the American flag, people "have died for that flag. And they put that flag up to the side, flanking a pride flag on the front of the United States president's house. It's despicable," Roy thundered.

““We have a duty…[to stand] up in defense of this country instead of a radical Leftist ideology that results in a pride flag being hung at the same level as the US flag on the front of the White House"

“Does the flag of the United States mean NOTHING?” #FlagDay”

'Schiff just hit the fan': House Republicans poised to censure Rep. Adam Schiff

The GOP-controlled House is poised to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and possibly fine him $16 million for his role in advancing the debunked Russian collusion narrative, abusing the trust afforded him as chairman of the Intelligence Committee, and for behaving "dishonestly and dishonorably."

Now, it's just a matter of getting Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna's resolution to the floor and seeing it through to a vote.

While House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) indicated he supports Luna's resolution and is "working with her on the best timing to bring it to the House Floor to help it pass," not all Republicans are on board with the current wording of the resolution.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) indicated that if the resolution comes to the floor, he will vote against it, noting, "I'm still litigating a federal lawsuit against Pelosi over a salary reduction she imposed on me for my refusal to wear a mask. ... The Constitution says the House may make its own rules but we can't violate other (later) provisions of the Constitution. A $16 million fine is a violation of the 27th and 8th amendments."

Republicans will need to present a united front to see the resolution through, as Democrats intend to introduce a motion to table or kill the resolution and are sticking together, reported Axios.

Luna, a member of the Freedom Caucus, suggested the vote will likely be held Thursday morning.

“Looks like my vote to censure & condemn @RepAdamSchiff will likely be held Thursday morning.”
— Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (@Rep. Anna Paulina Luna) 1686676571

The resolution, introduced by the Florida congresswoman May 23, accuses Schiff of abusing the trust afforded him while serving as ranking member and then chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. It further condemns him for behaving "dishonestly and dishonorably on many other occasions."

The resolution states Schiff cited evidence of collusion between former President Donald Trump and Russia "that — as is clear from reports by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, and Special Counsel Durham — does not exist. ... By repeatedly telling these falsehoods, Representative Schiff purposely deceived his Committee, Congress, and the American people."

Luna's resolution also drags Schiff for:

 • lending "credibility to the Steele dossier — a collection of debunked collusion accusations funded by President Trump's political rivals — by reading false Steele allegation into the Congressional Record at a HPSCI hearing on March 20, 2017";
 • abusing his privileged access to classified information by composing "a false memo justifying the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant application on trump associate Carter Page, which Inspector General Horowitz later found was riddled with 17 major mistakes and omissions, provoking FISA Court Presiding Judge Rosemary Collyer to state unequivocally that the Federal Bureau of Investigation acted to 'mislead the FISC'";
 • grossly violating Carter Page's civil liberties by smearing him "as a Russian collaborator and justifying spurious investigations of him";
 • "falsely denying that his staff coordinated with a whistleblower to launch the first impeachment of President Trump"; and
 • reciting "a false, concocted rendition of a phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky."

Luna claimed Schiff owes the American people a debt, as his "lies, misrepresentations, and abuses of sensitive information" resulted in a Russian-collusion investigation that cost taxpayers $32 million.

This figure appears to reflect the cost of the two-year special counsel investigation led by Robert Mueller as indicated in an expenditures report circulated by the Department of Justice in August 2019.

To recoup this debt, Luna suggested that Schiff be fined $16 million.

Concerning the forthcoming vote on the resolution, Luna tweeted, "Schiff just hit the fan."

Schiff hit Twitter with a response Tuesday, employing a turn of phrase coined by Adolf Hitler: "Today Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced a resolution to censure & fine me $16 million. Authors of the big lie are attacking me for telling the truth &holding Trump accountable. This is not just an attack on me—it’s an attack on our democracy & the institution of Congress."

“ICYMI—Today Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced a resolution to censure & fine me $16 million.

Authors of the big lie are attacking me for telling the truth &holding Trump accountable.

This is not just an attack on me—it’s an attack on our democracy & the institution of Congress.”
— Adam Schiff (@Adam Schiff) 1686687384

After first seizing upon the Republican effort to hold him accountable as a fundraising opportunity, Schiff later told CNN that he was "flattered" by the "MAGA resolution," which he suggested was a testament to his effectiveness.

Biden jokes about bribery allegations — then GOP lawmaker makes him regret it when she answers his wisecrack

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) sternly rebuked President Joe Biden on Thursday after he joked about the allegations of corruption against him.

After hosting a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the White House, a reporter yelled a question at Biden about allegations that, according to House Republicans, he engaged in a "criminal bribery scheme" as vice president.

"Congresswoman Nancy Mace says there's damning evidence in the FBI file that you sold out the country," the reporter noted, asking Biden for his response.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Biden used the moment to crack a joke.

"Wheres the money?" he wise-cracked, adding, "I'm joking. It's a bunch of malarkey."

“A reporter asks Joe Biden about allegations that he was involved in a criminal bribery scheme:

"I'm supposed to walk off the stage now...Where's the money? I'm joking. It's a bunch of malarkey."”
— Townhall.com (@Townhall.com) 1686250854

The joke did not go over well.

"[W]e don't find selling out your country funny. Prove us wrong by releasing your and your family’s unredacted bank records. The FBI can't protect you forever," Mace responded.

“.@POTUS we don’t find selling out your country funny. Prove us wrong by releasing your and your family’s unredacted bank records. The FBI can’t protect you forever.”
— Rep. Nancy Mace (@Rep. Nancy Mace) 1686253315

The South Carolina Republican proceeded to answer Biden's joke by listing the names of companies that Republicans allege the Biden family used as "shell companies" to conceal money received from foreign nationals.

"And since you asked, the money is in your family’s shell companies," Mace said.

“Rosemont Realty, LLC
Rosemont Seneca Global Risk Services, LLC
RSP Holdings, LLC
Rosemont Seneca Technology Partners, LLC
Rosemont Seneca Thornton, LLC
Rosemont Seneca Advisors, LLC
Rosemont Seneca Bohai, LLC
[JBB SR. INC.
RSTP II Alpha Partners, LLC
RSTP I Bravo Partners, LLC”
— Rep. Nancy Mace (@Rep. Nancy Mace) 1686253315

Last month, the House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said his committee had obtained bank records showing evidence of the shell companies and how much money they received.

"Most of these companies were limited liability companies formed during Joe Biden’s vice presidency," Comer explained. "The bank records show the Biden family, their associates, and their companies received over $10 million from foreign nationals and their companies."

Meanwhile, Fox News reported Thursday that the FBI's "highly confidential" confidential human source — whose information is the subject of a document that nearly landed FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress — told the bureau that an executive at Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian natural gas firm where Hunter Biden served as a board member, directly paid Biden $5 million.

"$5 million for one Biden, $5 million for the other Biden," the executive told the FBI's source, according to sources who spoke with Fox News.

The White House denies Biden is guilty of any wrongdoing.

Student barred from graduation ceremony after stating there are only two genders says boss rescinded firefighting job offer

Student barred from graduation ceremony after stating there are only two genders says boss rescinded firefighting job offer

A student barred from his high school graduation ceremony after stating there are only two genders said in a Sunday interview on "Fox & Friends" that a firefighting job offer has now been rescinded.

"Girls are girls, and guys are guys. There is no in-between," 18-year-old Travis Lohr recalled saying, as KHQ reported.

Lohr made the off-script comment at a high school assembly where seniors at Idaho's Kellogg High School offer a piece of advice to younger students.

More than 100 parents, students, and community members gathered Friday to protest the school's decision to ban him from participating in the graduation ceremony over the remark, according to the Idaho Tribune.

I didn’t direct it at any groups or anything like that; it was just something I chose to say in the moment," Lohr also told the outlet, adding that his remark was met with an "uproar of cheers."

Lohr says he departed from his preapproved remarks at the Thursday assembly, instead speaking from the heart, according to the Idaho Freedom Foundation.

Bus driver Dakota Mailloux, who joined the protest on his own time, told the outlet he was fired for his participation.

Lohr was not asked to apologize for the remark nor would he have provided one if asked, he told Fox News Channel host Rachel Campos-Duffy Sunday morning on "Fox & Friends."

"What I said I believe in, and I stand by it."

"I wasn't able to walk at graduation. My offer to work for the forest service was rescinded," Lohr also said.

Lohr told Campos-Duffy he was slated to start work Sunday, but when he went in to complete the final paperwork, his boss informed him he was rescinding the offer. He described the job as "fighting wildland forest fires."

"That's part of life, as I am learning, and I am going to continue to grow from here. I'm not going to dwell on it."

"I don't believe I would have been punished at all, personally, if I had said 'black lives matter,'" Lohr told Campos-Duffy.

"For this to happen over what I said, it's just controversial ... If people speak up like I did ... it seems frowned upon. You can be punished for it, obviously, like I'm being punished," Lohr said.

"It's reassuring to know that I'm not alone and realize what I did wasn't wrong," Lohr said of the outpouring of support from his peers and people in the community.

"Unacceptable!" Idaho state representative Heather Scott (R) tweeted Friday, describing Lohr's original statement at the assembly as a "scientific fact."

“UNACCEPTABLE! The Shoshone County Kellogg High school graduation is canceled for all students! So how I am understanding this is:

1. A student speaks scientific truth at a school assembly (“Guys are guys and girls are girls. There is no in-between.”)
2. Science denier “adult”…”
— Rep. Heather Scott (@Rep. Heather Scott) 1685749243

Despite an earlier announcement from the district saying graduation would be delayed over "safety concerns," Kellogg High School held its ceremony Saturday morning.

Kellogg School District Superintendent Lance Pearson asked parents and students to keep the time of the ceremony "under wraps," KHQ reported.

Watch video from the Idaho Tribune below of Kellogg High School students and community members protesting a decision to ban Travis Lohr from walking in the school's graduation ceremony.

Pentagon orders shut down of 'family-friendly' drag show on Nevada Air Force base with 'no minimum age requirement'

The Pentagon ordered a Nevada Air Force base to cancel a drag queen show on government grounds just a day before it was set to take place, according to the New York Post.

Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas was directed to shut down the performance or move it off military grounds, despite the location being used to host previous drag shows.

The "family-friendly" event scheduled for June 1, 2023 — the beginning of "Pride Month" — was promoted as having "no minimum age requirement" with alcohol available to those over 21 years old. It was also labeled as a "free community drag showcase" featuring "RuPaul’s Drag Race" star CoCo Montrese.

“The DOD will not host drag events at U.S. military installations or facilities. Hosting these types of events in federally funded facilities is not a suitable use of DOD resources,” Sabrina Singh, deputy press secretary, confirmed in an email to the New York Post.

“Per DoD Joint Ethics Regulation (JER), certain criteria must be met for persons or organizations acting in non-Federal capacity to use DoD facilities and equipment," Singh also said, according to NBC News.

Orders for the cancellation came directly from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, the outlet also reported, with Milley reportedly having become visibly angry when he was informed about the event just days before.

“The Air Force will not host drag events at its installations or facilities. Commanders have been directed to either cancel or relocate these events to an off-base location,” an alleged Air Force official told NBC News.

In April 2023, Rep. Matt Gaetz personally confronted Milley with documents and news clippings that showed "Drag Queen Story Hours" were occurring on United States military installations across the country.

The Nellis Air Force Base drag show was among those cited by Gaetz, who referred to a June 2021 story from Breitbart that described the base's "first-ever drag queen show at one of its on-base dining and entertainment clubs."

“Gen. Milley asked @RepMattGaetz to give him the articles the congressman referenced on drag queen story hours and shows on military bases, claiming he was unaware of them.

Here is a photo of Gaetz taken by his staff of him physically handing Milley a folder of the articles…”
— Kristina Wong 🇺🇸 (@Kristina Wong 🇺🇸) 1680205589

The general said he was "unaware" of any such events, according to Gaetz's office, but committed to ending the events on military property if the claims were true.

"That's the first I'm hearing about that kind of stuff. I don't read those news stories. I don't know what you're talking about. I'd like to take a look at those because I don't agree with those," Milley said at the time.

Gaetz celebrated the cancellation on his Twitter page and stated "HUGE VICTORY: The Department of Defense has CANCELED a scheduled 'child-friendly' drag show after I demanded answers from @SecDef Austin and General Milley! Drag shows should not be taking place on military installations with taxpayer dollars PERIOD!"

The White House's secret message to Democrats suggests who actually won the debt ceiling negotiation

The White House is circulating a private message to Democrats: President Joe Biden actually won debt ceiling negotiations by keeping most Republican requests out of the agreement.

White House officials are selling the agreement to Democrats as one in which Biden successfully staved off the "extreme demands" of Republicans and one in which Democrats can continue advancing their policy goals, Politico reported.

In fact, the White House is celebrating that major social safety spending programs — Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare — and Biden's legislative achievements, like the Inflation Reduction Act (which doesn't actually reduce inflation) and the CHIPS act, among others, are "all being preserved and funded."

More from Politico:

White House officials argue the spending figures ultimately favor Democrats, even if [House Speaker Kevin] McCarthy gets to take a victory lap talking about spending cuts. The permitting reforms advance their climate agenda.

That's right. According to Politico, the agreement essentially allows McCarthy to declare victory in public. But the real winners are Democrats.

The reporting aligns with what Biden said after the deal was announced. Asked what he says to his allies that fear he conceded too much ground to Republicans, Biden responded, "They'll find I didn't."

So what did Republicans achieve?

If the White House believes Democrats ultimately won negotiations, what concessions did House Speaker Kevin McCarthy earn from Democrats?

Republicans agreed to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for a limit on government spending through January 2025 while negotiating work requirements for SNAP and TANF. The agreement also claws back some of the money earmarked last year for IRS expansions, permits some increases in defense spending, and ends the pause on student loan payments.

Political spin from the White House is not unexpected. But criticism from conservative Republicans gives credence to messaging from the Biden camp.

“This new analysis from my friend @RepChipRoy breaks down why I’m a hard NO on the disastrous debt ceiling deal.

Just look at what House Republicans passed last month—compared to what they’re settling for now.

Disappointing is an understatement.”
— Rep. Andrew Clyde (@Rep. Andrew Clyde) 1685394176

What happens next?

The House will act first. If and when it passes — despite holdouts on both sides — the bill will then go to the Senate.

The agreement will likely take several days to pass through the Senate, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has told members to expect the possibility of weekend votes. Once approved there, it will go to Biden's desk for his signature.

The entire process will likely be carried out before the June 5 deadline.

Horowitz: The shocking degree of political betrayal from Kevin McCarthy

Imagine a family facing impending bankruptcy while suddenly hitting their credit limit. Typically, that family would make serious lifestyle changes to balance the budget, and if they found it necessary to take out a new line of credit, they would only do so for the minimal amount necessary for a short period of time. Well, when it comes to the uniparty in Washington, after the $11 trillion COVID spending and money-printing orgy, they responded to calls for spending cuts and reforms … by allowing an all-you-can-eat debt buffet from now until 2025! Don’t worry, they gave us a couple of spending and accounting gimmicks in return.

The central flaw in McCarthy’s approach to this deal was his entire messaging in the lead-up to this act of political adultery. Rather than drawing a line in the sand on the GOP-passed bill and then making the battle about debt, inflation, and the weaponization of government, he made the battle about getting Biden to negotiate and about not defaulting on the debt. In other words, he conveyed the message that Republicans fear not raising the debt limit just as much as the Democrats. Perforce, Biden easily agreed to “negotiate” so McCarthy could say he got “something” other than a “clean” debt limit increase. Once Biden agreed to negotiate and McCarthy wrongly validated June 1 as a drop-dead deadline, he had no leverage left. Hence, the interception rather than a touchdown in the form of the debt ceiling bill.

And make no mistake about it, this was a political interception. Not only did this bill enshrine the biblical and apocalyptic levels of spending into law – not only did it jettison all of the meaningful provisions of the GOP bill – it gave Biden more debt credit than what was on the table. The assumption from every GOP member was that the debt limit would be increased for one year. Instead, McCarthy, along with his negotiators, Reps. Patrick McHenry (N.C.) and Garret Graves (La.), agreed to suspend the entire debt limit for the rest of Biden’s presidency. Worse, there is no dollar limit, so that Biden can now run up the tab for the remainder of his presidency. It will be at least $4 trillion in additional debt, but likely more.

— Rep. Ken Buck (@Rep. Ken Buck) 1685307888

Worse, the only other leverage point Republicans have is the annual appropriation bills. But now that Republicans agreed to top-line spending numbers for the next two years, they don’t have much leverage to fight on the budget bills either. Sure, this bill does have a trigger that induces automatic 1% cuts to discretionary spending if they fail to agree on appropriation bills, but a 1% cut is no longer sufficient if working off the insane baseline of spending enshrined last year by Biden and McConnell in the omnibus bill.

McCarthy is acting like it’s 1998. Yes, back then, a slight cut in baseline spending increases and some modest increased work requirements for a few welfare programs might be worth supporting. The COVID spending, however, has made our budget insolvent and our inflation unsustainable. It is truly hard to comprehend how unprecedented the COVID spending is. Aside from the monetary printing, our budget essentially went from $4.4 trillion to $6.4 trillion overnight! It typically took 15 years for our budget to expand by such a sum of cash. With COVID over, it is indefensible to continue working off this baseline. Talking about 1990s-era welfare reforms – and very nebulous at that – is laughable relative to the issues we face both with top-line spending and debt, as well as the woke and weaponized bureaucracies flush with ungodly sums of cash.

As such, even the House-passed bill was very modest. But at least it vitiated the Green New Deal, the 80,000 new IRS agents, and the student loan bailout, while instituting the REINS Act to force all new government regulations to get approval from Congress. The polling on the GOP position was terrific, and even the media was surprised at how Republicans were finally winning a budget issue. In the worst-case scenario, we would have given Biden $1.5 trillion in new debt in return for a watered-down version of this bill.

Instead, McCarthy gave Biden at least $4 trillion (but potentially unlimited until 2025) in return for nothing. The lawmakers cleverly jettisoned all the meaningful provisions of the bill and left the nebulous ones, such as clawing back already unspent COVID funds and ill-defined permitting reform while enshrining the Green New Deal. Oh, they cut $1.9 billion from the NEW additional $80 billion in funding for the IRS. What a joke!

Even the budget caps that lock in last year’s spending levels will really wind up locking in this year’s levels. As the New York Times reports, “White House officials say a series of side deals with Republicans, including one related to funding for the Internal Revenue Service, will allow actual funding to be closer to this year’s levels."

McCarthy replaced the REINS Act, which requires Congress to approve new regulations, with an honor system allowing Biden’s own OMB to accept commensurate cuts paired against new regulations, which the director can either waive or hollow out with notional cuts.

Additionally, here are a few more important observations on the bill:

 • Ironically, the only real savings come from already unspent COVID funds. Not only does this bill fail to uproot the COVID biomedical security state that led to this inflation bomb, it continues exempting the worst elements – mitigation efforts, vaccines, and genomic sequencing (potential gain of function) from recissions.
“So the only real savings in the bill are from unspent covid funding, but even that funding is kept for the WORST elements of the biomedical security state. These three provisions would save money for vaccines, testing and mitigation, and "genomic sequencing and surveillance,"…”
— Daniel Horowitz (@Daniel Horowitz) 1685368878
 • Democrats are fully supporting this bill. This is astounding given that Republicans control the House and had the upper hand on the politics of this issue. It’s a reflection of McCarthy’s (and Trump’s) tenure in leadership last decade when every major budget bill passed with more Democrat support than Republican votes, despite the GOP having controlled the chamber.
 • While making nebulous cuts to the record high baseline growth of discretionary spending, the bill will increase mandatory spending by 5% and increase military spending 3%, after a $70 billion surge last year. At some point, Republicans need to kick their habit of aimless and unlimited spending for defense lobbyists until we fix the culture of this woke and broken military.
 • According to the CBO, we are slated to spend $80 trillion over the next 10 years, and there’s never been an era when the CBO has not lowballed the cost of government. The blank check for the remainder of the Biden presidency will allow him to create the “next current thing,” such as Ukraine or COVID, which will be used to override the budget caps, but will not require an extra politically perilous vote on raising the debt limit.

We all know McCarthy has a narrow majority, which is why we all tried to rally behind the House bill and give him some leeway. We could even have accepted less than the GOP House bill. But to jettison every important reform, make a mockery of the others, and do so in a way that precludes us from coming back for more throughout Biden’s presidency – all while leading in the polls against a dead carcass of a president – is not just political malpractice but an act of political betrayal.
