Markwayne Mullin accuses Matt Gaetz of 'living off your daddy's money'

Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma engaged in a hostile exchange on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

When retweeting a post suggesting that Mullin's net worth had ballooned from 2018 to 2022, Gaetz commented, "We should pass a ban on trading stocks!"

Mullin suggested that Gaetz is living off of his father's money. "I hear @RepMattGaetz has criticism of hard-earned success — he should try building a business that gains value, it’s more gratifying than living off your daddy's money," Mullin tweeted.

Gaetz replied to Mullin's tweet by sharing the graphic about his net worth.

"The only thing I criticized were your stock trades while a member of congress. I want to ban those trades. You cashed in and made millions," Gaetz also responded.

Mullin, who began serving as a senator earlier this year, had previously served in the House of Representatives.

The senator had appeared prepared to get into a physical altercation with a witness at a hearing last month, though no fight actually occurred.

Gaetz successfully moved to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the House speakership earlier this year, leading Republicans to embark on a lengthy process to tap a new speaker.

General Mark Milley insisted he was not sure what the word "woke" means before he claimed the last thing the armed forces are is "woke."

The confusing statements from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff came in an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria, when the host asked, "Is the U.S. military too woke?"

"No, not at all," Milley replied. "So — you know, I'm not even sure what that word truly means," he stated right after.

"But I would tell you that the military I see is a military that is exceptionally strong. It's powerful. It's ready. In fact, our readiness rate is — the way we measure readiness is better now than they've been in years," the general continued.

After boasting about the United States military's air and sea operations, Milley made a definitive claim about the armed forces.

"But this — military is a lot of things, but woke it is not. So I take exception to that. I think that people say those things for reasons that are their own reasons. But it's not true. It's not accurate," he declared.

However, the chairman seemed to then stumble through an admission that there are some woke elements to the U.S. military branches.

"It is not to say, by the way, that there is — there is not some things out there that are — could be fit into that category. But I don't think it certainly is — it is not a broad-brush description of the U.S. military as it exists today," Milley added.

In April 2023, Milley claimed that he was "unaware" of any "Drag Queen Story Hours" happening on military installations.

"'Joint Base Langley-Eustis holds drag show at kid-friendly festival.' And the next is 'U.S. military defends drag show at largest training center as quote, 'essential to morale,'" Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) told General Milley at a hearing.

The Republican was then photographed handing the general a folder of news clippings detailing other woke events that Milley said he was not privy to.

Gen. Milley asked @RepMattGaetz to give him the articles the congressman referenced on drag queen story hours and shows on military bases, claiming he was unaware of them.\n\nHere is a photo of Gaetz taken by his staff of him physically handing Milley a folder of the articles\u2026

In June 2021, Milley defended the reading of critical race theory texts by the military, the Daily Wire reported, saying it was akin to reading communist or Marxist doctrine for educational purposes.

“I’ve read Mao Tse-Tung; I’ve read Karl Marx; I’ve read Lenin. That doesn’t make me a communist.”

Milley said that he found it “offensive that we are accusing the United States military, our general officers, our commissioned, non-commissioned officers, of being ‘woke’ because we’re studying some theories that are out there.”

Milley also said that he believed it was "important actually for those of us in uniform to be open-minded and be widely read" regarding "white rage."

"The United States Military Academy is a university, and it is important that we train and we understand, and I want to understand white rage and I’m white," he stated.

Pentagon orders shut down of 'family-friendly' drag show on Nevada Air Force base with 'no minimum age requirement'

The Pentagon ordered a Nevada Air Force base to cancel a drag queen show on government grounds just a day before it was set to take place, according to the New York Post.

Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas was directed to shut down the performance or move it off military grounds, despite the location being used to host previous drag shows.

The "family-friendly" event scheduled for June 1, 2023 — the beginning of "Pride Month" — was promoted as having "no minimum age requirement" with alcohol available to those over 21 years old. It was also labeled as a "free community drag showcase" featuring "RuPaul’s Drag Race" star CoCo Montrese.

“The DOD will not host drag events at U.S. military installations or facilities. Hosting these types of events in federally funded facilities is not a suitable use of DOD resources,” Sabrina Singh, deputy press secretary, confirmed in an email to the New York Post.

“Per DoD Joint Ethics Regulation (JER), certain criteria must be met for persons or organizations acting in non-Federal capacity to use DoD facilities and equipment," Singh also said, according to NBC News.

Orders for the cancellation came directly from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, the outlet also reported, with Milley reportedly having become visibly angry when he was informed about the event just days before.

“The Air Force will not host drag events at its installations or facilities. Commanders have been directed to either cancel or relocate these events to an off-base location,” an alleged Air Force official told NBC News.

In April 2023, Rep. Matt Gaetz personally confronted Milley with documents and news clippings that showed "Drag Queen Story Hours" were occurring on United States military installations across the country.

The Nellis Air Force Base drag show was among those cited by Gaetz, who referred to a June 2021 story from Breitbart that described the base's "first-ever drag queen show at one of its on-base dining and entertainment clubs."

The general said he was "unaware" of any such events, according to Gaetz's office, but committed to ending the events on military property if the claims were true.

"That's the first I'm hearing about that kind of stuff. I don't read those news stories. I don't know what you're talking about. I'd like to take a look at those because I don't agree with those," Milley said at the time.

Gaetz celebrated the cancellation on his Twitter page and stated "HUGE VICTORY: The Department of Defense has CANCELED a scheduled 'child-friendly' drag show after I demanded answers from @SecDef Austin and General Milley! Drag shows should not be taking place on military installations with taxpayer dollars PERIOD!"

Conservative and progressive House members vote to withdraw US troops from Somalia, but majorities in both parties shoot measure down

Majorities of House lawmakers in both political parties shot down a measure that would have compelled President Joe Biden to pull all U.S. troops out of Somalia, other than troops protecting the American embassy.

The text of the measure would have instructed "the President to remove all United States Armed Forces, other than United States Armed Forces assigned to protect the United States Embassy, from Somalia by not later than the date that is 365 days after the date of the adoption of this resolution."

Minorities from both parties voted in favor of the measure, with leftist lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) joining with conservative legislators like Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) to support the concurrent resolution.

Overall, 52 Republicans and 50 Democrats voted to yank U.S. troops out of Somalia, while a whopping 165 Republicans and 156 Democrats voted against the measure.

"By a large margin Congress supports keeping US troops in Somalia. I do not. Most voters probably don't either," GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz tweeted.

"I just voted for @RepMattGaetz's resolution to bring our troops home from Somalia. There are currently no vital U.S. interests in having a presence there," Republican Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado tweeted.

Last month, majorities of House members in each party rejected a concurrent resolution that would have directed the president to pull U.S. forces out of Syria. Only 47 Republicans and 56 Democrats backed that measure, while 171 Republicans and 150 Democrats voted against it.

During a House Armed Services Committee hearing, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin rejected claims from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) that "Drag Queen Story Hours" were occurring on United States military installations across the country.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley responded to the claims by Gaetz by saying he was "unaware" of any such events, according to Gaetz's office, but committed to ending the events on military property if the claims were true.

Afterwards, Gaetz was photographed handing a folder to the general, containing a series of articles he referenced during the hearing about drag queen events on military bases.

"'Joint Base Langley-Eustis holds drag show at kid-friendly festival.' And the next is 'U.S. military defends drag show at largest training center as quote, 'essential to morale,'" Gaetz told General Milley at the hearing.

"Next is 'Nellis Air Force Base hosts first-ever drag queen show: 'Essential to morale and readiness.'' That's a Breitbart piece. And finally, 'Ramstein cancels library's drag queen story time for Pride Month following criticism,'" the congressman continued.

"Can I get copies of those? Because I'd like to take a look at those myself, actually take a look and find out what actually is going on there," the general replied.

"That's the first I'm hearing about that kind of stuff. I don't read those news stories. I don't know what you're talking about. I'd like to take a look at those because I don't agree with those," Milley added.

Rep. Gaetz was referring to a series of press clippings, including a June 2021 story from Breitbart regarding Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, which hosted "its first-ever drag queen show at one of its on-base dining and entertainment clubs."

Gaetz also referenced a July 2021 story by the Western Journal that details Montana's Malmstrom Air Force base hosting a drag event at a "club and community center at the base."

A Military.com story from May 2022 was also cited, describing an event at "Ramstein Air Base in Germany in which a drag queen was scheduled to read a book to children at the library," but was canceled "after criticism from some service members."

Gaetz's office also linked to stories about drag queen events at Elgin Air Force Base near Valparaiso, Florida, in June 2022 and Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia in July 2022.

Rep. Gaetz's office has not yet replied to a request for comment.

Gov. Murphy attacks Rep. Gaetz for attending Republican event in NJ: 'I don't ever want you back in this state'

Gov. Phil Murphy lashed out at Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) for attending a private Republican event in New Jersey this week. The Democratic governor of New Jersey regressed to name-calling, and called Gaetz a "fool," for attending a gala.

Gaetz attended a gala in Jersey City hosted by the New York Young Republican Club on Thursday, where he was a featured speaker. Photos of the event were posted online, and Gov. Murphy took aim at Gaetz on Friday.

During a Friday press conference, Murphy attacked the Republican representative by calling him a "knucklehead."

"That guy in the middle, the tall, handsome fella in the gray suit, that is Representative Matt Putz - oh sorry, Matt Gaetz, and based upon his past performances, it is obvious being a knucklehead is not beyond the pale for him," Murphy said, according to WCMH-TV. "He was actually Sarah Palin's backup act for this event."

Murphy doubled down on his criticism of Gaetz on Twitter where he posted a photo of the event, which showed Gaetz and several other Republicans at the gala. Murphy went so far as to say he never wants Gaetz to return to New Jersey.

"Last night, the @NYYRC allegedly snuck into Jersey City to hold a 'gala fundraiser' – ignoring our social distancing and mask rules," Murphy tweeted. "It is beyond the pale that anyone would willingly endanger people in another state. Jersey City law enforcement is investigating this matter."

"It is also beyond the pale that Rep Matt Putz – I mean @RepMattGaetz – would participate in this. What a fool. Matt – You are not welcome in New Jersey, and frankly I don't ever want you back in this state," he added.

Gaetz responded on Twitter by highlighting that New Jerseyans are fleeing the state. "You're gonna regret this tweet when you move to Florida like the rest of New Jersey," Gaetz retaliated.

Data compiled by United Van Lines from March 1 to Aug. 19, found that New Jersey had the highest rate of exodus of all states; 69% moved out of N.J. compared to 31% of people moving into the Garden State.

Florida was the third most popular destination for New Jersey taxpayers in 2017-18, according to census records. "Between the 2011-12 and 2017-18 tax years, the income of tax filers from those states moving to Florida has doubled."

Gaetz then responded to Murphy's comment with a light-hearted joke about his appearance.

New York Young Republicans Club president Gavin Wax refuted the allegations of wrongdoing at the gala.

"The @NYYRC Gala was held in full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations," Wax tweeted. "Any suggestion to the contrary and any legal threats are made in bad faith and politically motivated. As far as we are aware, the First Amendment has not been repealed."

Vish Burra, the gala organizer and New York Young Republicans vice president, said the group "did everything by the book," and contended that the 150-person capacity complied with state rules because the event was protected political speech.

Jersey City officials launched an investigation into Maritime Parc, the venue that held the Republican event.

"In Jersey City we take Covid enforcement very seriously, and this event appears to be an egregious violation of the governor's executive orders, including capacity limitations and mandatory mask wearing," Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop (D) said in a statement.

Jake Hudnut, Jersey City's chief prosecutor, said, "These photos of COVID-19 violations are dangerous and unacceptable. Maritime Parc is under the jurisdiction of @NJGov's Liberty State Park. We will follow up w/ LSP Police today. Any summonses will be prosecuted fully in #JerseyCity's courts."

Fulop posted a photo of the health department's notice ordering the venue to shut down.

"This establishment known as Maritime Parc, 84 Audrey Zapp Dr., has been ordered CLOSED until such time as the operators prepare and submit a written operational plan to the Jersey City Department of Environmental Health," read the order, signed by Division of Environmental Health Director Happy James Boor.

— Steven Fulop (@Steven Fulop)1607104594.0

A spokesperson for Maritime Parc said the booking was "last minute," but it was in a room with a maximum capacity of 600 people.

"The New Jersey State Police were in fact onsite throughout the event to ensure guidelines were followed, prior to issuing the initial statement as well as the order to temporarily close," the statement from Maritime read.

"Maritime Parc will assist the investigation in whatever ways necessary and is eager to help," the venue stated. "They had done everything in their capacity and that is required to be compliant here – including informing the group several times of New Jersey's social distancing regulations."

The venue's management declared that the event did not exceed capacity limits and only found out about the order to close through social media.

Gaetz reacted to the business being shut down by advising, "Dear Business Owners - Escape the Tyrany. Move to Florida."

He also asked, "Should we organize a "peaceful protest" of lockdowns in New Jersey?"

Some online critics pointed out that Murphy was being hypocritical since he previously attended a Black Lives Matter-inspired protest in Hillside, New Jersey. Murphy was seen at a crowded protest on June 7 for "Hillside Strong March to End Racism, Police Brutality & Embrace Diversity." Murphy was seen not practicing social distancing at the event, which violated the governor's own order he signed in late May that prohibited gatherings of more than 25 people.
