Male with loaded gun tries to rob people in car. But driver also is armed — and things don't end well for alleged crook.

Police in Glendale, California, told KABC-TV a 37-year-old male with a loaded weapon tried to rob two people sitting in an SUV on Sunday night. But the driver, who also was armed, turned the tables and fatally shot the assailant.

Officers responded to the 200 block of East Dryden Street around 10:40 p.m. and found a male in the middle of the road with a single gunshot wound, police told the station.

'If somebody finds themselves in a situation where their life is in danger or someone else's life is in danger, I as a ... community member, as a citizen, would do whatever I could to protect myself and anybody else.'

Investigators determined that the male they found — identified Tuesday as Edward Mazon, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office — approached the pair and tried to rob them, KABC said. Police added to the station that the driver of the SUV "apparently shot Mazon, then drove away."

Mazon was pronounced dead at the scene, KABC said, and police are trying to locate the pair who were in the SUV. Authorities are viewing them as victims, not as suspects facing any murder charges, KNBC-TV said

Sgt. Vahe Abramyan, a spokesperson for the Glendale Police Department, added to KNBC that "everything's possible, but at this point, it appears that they are victims."

Police told KNBC-TV that several people called 911, and more than a dozen neighbors watched paramedics perform CPR on a man in the middle of Dryden Street near Brand Boulevard.

“I saw the EMT do the chest compressions, like furiously, [I] had no idea what was going on," resident Terri Robertson told KNBC. "And then a minute later, they're covering him with a sheet."

Robertson added to the station that if the victims were held at gunpoint, she supports them fighting back: “I would say they have to, I would say they have to, because crime is getting really crazy everywhere."

Abramyan added to KNBC that "if somebody finds themselves in a situation where their life is in danger or someone else's life is in danger, I as a ... community member, as a citizen, would do whatever I could to protect myself and anybody else. You are responsible ultimately for the actions that you commit, but if it's a life or death situation, that's going to be a judgment call on that person.”

Those with information about the shooting are urged to contact the Glendale Police Robbery/Homicide detectives at 818-548-3987 or the police department at 818 549-4911, KABC said.

NYC cops charge subway rider who reportedly fired warning shots to save woman from robbery — and folks are fuming over arrest

New York City police have charged a subway rider who reportedly fired warning shots to save a woman from a robbery.

As you might expect, observers fed up with crooks getting away with crime — and depressed over regular folks getting into trouble when they step in to prevent crime — are livid over the arrest.

What are the details?

A panhandler was holding open an emergency gate at the 49th Street subway station at Seventh Avenue just after 9 p.m. Tuesday and told a 40-year-old woman he would steal her purse if she didn't hand over her money, WABC-TV reported.

With that, another man ordered the panhandler to "leave her alone" and then fired a couple of warning shots, thwarting the potential robbery, the station said.

No injuries were reported, WABC said, and the man with the gun fled.

Police on Wednesday arrested a suspect — 43-year-old John Rote — and charged him with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, and menacing, the station reported.

"I want to be clear: we don't tolerate this kind of conduct in NYC Transit, period," NYC Transit President Richard Davey said in a statement, according to WABC. "Once again, cameras recorded a perpetrator, and we are grateful the NYPD made an arrest within hours. Thank goodness nobody was hurt here, but what occurred was outrageous, reckless, and unacceptable."

What happened to the panhandler?

Police arrested the panhandler — 40-year-old Matthew Roesch — and charged him with attempted robbery, the station said, adding that Roesch has one prior arrest for theft of service at the Times Square-W. 42nd St. subway station Sept. 18.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782), WABC said.

'Arrested? Hell, give him a medal!'

Here's a sampling of social media commenters who are angry that a guy apparently trying to help prevent crime is now being called a criminal:

  • "Arrested? Hell, give him a medal!" one commenter said.
  • "And people wonder why no one stands up for people in trouble," another commenter observed.
  • "Good thing all these police officers were in the New York City subway transit system to prevent this gun crime," another commenter quipped.
  • "Release this man," another commenter demanded. "NYC is a f***ing s**thole. They expect you to stand there and be a victim and will lock you in a cage for defending innocent people. This is outrageous. People should be ... demanding his release."

'Mama bear just sprung into action': Instincts kick in for mother, daughter who fight intruder in their store — and it's all caught on video

A mother and daughter battled back against an intruder who entered their Southern California store Sunday evening and tried to steal catered food they prepared, KABC-TV reported.

What are the details?

Carol Garnier — a chef and owner of Prepped with Love in Westminster — told the station the man, possibly a transient, got inside the store around 7:45 p.m. after her last customer departed.

However, the door didn't lock after the last customer left, KABC said, and surveillance video shows the intruder entering the store and heading straight for the prepared food inside the glass-door refrigerator.

Mary Dao, Garnier's daughter, reacted quickly, telling the station that "my instincts just kick[ed] in. I don't even know how I knew how to grab that table and push it against him, but it's just all of the adrenaline. I just did what I had to do."

Once Dao began pushing the table against the intruder as he grabbed an item from the refrigerator, her mother ran over to help.

'Mama bear just sprung into action'

"Mama bear just sprung into action to protect my property, my daughter, and anything further to be damaged," Garnier told KABC.

Garnier and Dao repeatedly pushed a table against the intruder, and it appeared that prevented him from getting any closer. The clip does show him throwing a beer can at Dao's face, the station said, adding that she wasn't injured.

"I didn't want him to enter and get behind the counter — that's where our knives are," Garnier told the station, "or go deeper into the fridge and get all of the meals."

It would have been a lot simpler, she said, if the man had just requested some food.

"If you just ask, I am more than happy to make you something to eat," Garnier added to KABC. "But the fact he didn't say anything ... he just came in and just aggressively tried to steal our food is what got me."

Dao is of the same mindset, telling the station, "I was ready to get down and use my hands if I needed to. We've been working hard, making food all day, and that belonged to somebody. They paid for that, and you just can't come in here and take what's not yours."

Anything else?

Garnier told KABC they filed a report with Westminster police, who added to the station that they recognize the intruder in the video and are actively looking for him.

Multiple people approach vehicle in possible carjacking attempt in middle of night. But victim has a gun — and one alleged assailant pays with his life.

An alleged robbery attempt in Indianapolis — possibly a carjacking attempt — ended with the victim shooting dead one of the alleged assailants early Wednesday morning.

What are the details?

Two people were in a car in front of their home when multiple individuals approached the vehicle, the Indianapolis Star reported. At least one person in this group had a gun, police told the Star.

A male from the group attempted to rob the people in the car, Sgt. Frank Wooten added to the paper. WXIN-TV reported that it may have been an attempted carjacking.

With that, one of the homeowners in the car shot and killed the male, the Star reported. Wooten added to the paper that officers believe the homeowner — who was detained and taken in for questioning — acted in self-defense.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers who responded around 4:20 a.m. to the home in the 11900 block of Tapp Drive found a male with gunshot wounds outside the residence, the Star said, adding that the male was pronounced dead at the scene.

The paper said it isn't yet clear if the fatally shot male was a juvenile or an adult.

Detectives, officers, and the forensics team were collecting evidence at the scene for several hours, an IMPD spokesperson told the Star. Detectives also have been working to identify others who may have been involved in the incident, the paper added.

The case will be presented to the Marion County prosecutor's office for formal review and charging determination, the Star said.

'I'm in shock'

Irene Davis has lived in the neighborhood for 13 years and told the paper she usually takes her morning walk on Tapp Drive after watching her kids get on their school bus.

"I'm shocked," Davis added to the Star. "I'm in shock."

She told the paper there's never been a shooting in the neighborhood and called it "very kid-friendly."

Joyce Kefauver has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and shares Davis' sentiments about her surroundings, adding that to the best of her knowledge there have been no homicides in the neighborhood, the Star reported.

"It's quiet, we wave," Kefauver added to the paper. "It's just kind of baffling that this would happen."

Anything else?

Those with information about this shooting should call Detective Andrew McKalips at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email a message to Andrew.McKalips@indy.gov.

Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana also can be anonymously called at 317-262-8477 (TIPS).

Self-defense claimed in deadly shooting on far east sideyoutu.be

Three armed crooks try robbing man. But when he fights back, one crook drops his gun — and victim turns the tables, picking up gun and shooting crook dead.

It proved to be a night when a trio of armed would-be robbers, all in their 20s, should have stayed put.

But instead they got out their vehicle early Saturday in the 1300 block of West 35th Street in Los Angeles, which is just west of the University of Southern California, and confronted a man at gunpoint in an attempt to rob him, police told the Los Angeles Times.

What happened next?

Presumably to their surprise, their victim wasn't about to play victim and fought back, police told the paper.

And lo and behold, amid the physical battle, one of the would-be robbers dropped his handgun — and unfortunately for him, the intended victim picked up the gun, police told the Times.

Not only that, he pulled the trigger and shot his attacker, police added to the paper.

Likely seeing their odds of a successful robbery quickly diminishing, the other two crooks hopped back in their car and fled, police told the Times.

What happened to the shot crook?

The would-be robber who was shot with his own gun was pronounced dead at the scene, police said to the paper, which noted that he was not identified.

Police detained and questioned the man who shot the would-be robber, the Times said, adding that he was later released and no charges have been filed.

Police didn't have a description of the other would-be robbers or their vehicle, the paper said, but the investigation is ongoing.

What did folks have to say about the incident?

Twitter users commenting on the L.A. Times' story about the incident were relieved by the outcome but decried the state of the streets and said law enforcement needs to do more:

  • "Arm yourself!!!" one commenter wrote. "You know the police will not show up. They even said they can't protect you."
  • "It’s the return of the Wild West. The more ineffective law enforcement is the more people will take their protection into their own hands," another user said. "Can’t blame them."
  • "This is what screaming 'defund the police' gets you. [District Attorney George Gascon] is a POS who will try to prosecute the person who had to fight to save his own life," another commenter offered.
  • "The more crime rises, and the more people feel those in power don’t care, the more citizens prepare for it, plan for it to happen, and arm themselves against it," another user noted. "And while this story had a seemingly positive ending, it bodes very poorly for the city to have Tombstone rules."

Boy, 14, shoots would-be robber in face as culprit was strangling his mother in pizza shop where she works

The 14-year-old boy stepped in to rescue his mother as a would-be robber was strangling her in a Philadelphia pizza shop where she works — shooting the culprit in the face.

What are the details?

The robbery suspect entered Bold Pizza on the 1500 block of Spring Garden Street around 9:47 p.m. Thursday and tried to reach over the counter and take money from the register, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

With that, a struggle ensued between the robbery suspect and an employee — the teen's mother — and the robbery suspect "started to strangle" her, police told the paper.

The teen then grabbed a handgun from under a counter and shot the robbery suspect once in the face, police told the Inquirer.

"There was money on the floor, and there was also some broken glass inside the store, and there was also a large amount of blood," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told WPVI-TV.

Responding officers followed a trail of blood from the pizza shop toward a subway entrance where several passersby said a man was bleeding from the face, the paper said.

Officers found the robbery suspect on the subway concourse and took him to a hospital where he was in critical condition, police added to the Inquirer.

Small told the station that police "found some cash in the subway" along with the 33-year-old male suspect.

Police said the teen's father legally owns the gun; authorities didn't say if the robbery suspect or the teen would face charges, the paper reported.

Police didn't identify the teen, his mother, or the robbery suspect, the Inquirer added.

Calls to Bold Pizza went unanswered Friday, and attempts to reach employees were unsuccessful, the paper said. WPVI said the pizza shop was closed Friday.

What did local folks have to say?

People who live nearby told the station they understand the teen was just trying to protect his parent.

"I am very proud, and it's kind of sad that a 14-year-old had to shoot the suspect, but it was quick thinking, and I'm glad that they were able to catch the person so fast," Raina Harris told WPVI.

"I think most people would do that in that situation ... to protect someone that they love ... when they're being threatened so violently," Nina Adams added to the station.

Connection to earlier attempted robbery?

Police said the suspect may have participated in an attempted robbery that occurred just minutes earlier, the paper said.

Three men entered a CVS located a half block from Bold Pizza around around 9:43 p.m. and demanded cash from the register, police told the Inquirer. When the cashier said she couldn’t open the registers without a code, police told the paper one of the three men threatened to shoot her.

Another member of the trio then pulled out a register drawer and threw it on the floor, police told the Inquirer, adding that nothing was taken, and the three men left the store.

Police said at least one of those men then entered the Bold Pizza Shop, WPVI reported, and that the description of the shot suspect matches what was seen CVS surveillance video.

Police are still looking for the other two suspects in connection with the CVS attempted robbery, the station said.

Would-be robber allegedly pulls knife on Compton man who was just walking to his car in his driveway. But the victim has a gun — and shoots the culprit dead.

If the late Sean Connery taught us anything over the span of his famed cinematic career, it's that you never bring a knife to a gun fight.

But as we've seen time and time again, certain folks just can't help themselves.

What happened this time?

A homeowner exited his Compton, California, residence near the 1500 block of West 156th Street around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday and was entering his vehicle in the driveway when a knife-wielding individual — described by authorities as a Hispanic male in his 30s — confronted the homeowner in an apparent robbery attempt, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office said.

However, the homeowner apparently saw "The Untouchables." He was armed with a gun, authorities said. The alleged attacker? Perhaps not a fan of the film.

The sheriff's office said the homeowner fired at the knife-wielding man, whom deputies found suffering from several gunshot wounds to the upper torso upon their arrival at the scene. The suspect, whom authorities did not name, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the deceased man was withheld, pending notification of his relatives, KNBC-TV reported.

Authorities said the knife in question and the homeowner's gun were recovered at the scene.

The homeowner was cooperative, and homicide investigators were questioning him, authorities added. KCBS-TV said it’s unclear whether the homeowner will face any charges.

As the TheBlaze has pointed out many times in the past, more and more Americans are acquiring guns to protect themselves in case of encounters just like this one — and criminals seem to be finding out the hard way that folks are taking up arms and won't hesitate to use them.

Here endeth the lesson.

Two parolees pull gun on group in apparent robbery attempt. But one victim has gun of his own — and shoots both assailants who take off running.

A pair of parolees apparently got a lot more than they bargained for when they rolled up on a man and two women who were standing in a Los Angeles parking lot Monday evening and pulled a gun on them.

What happened?

Surveillance video obtained by Los Angeles police detectives showed a silver Dodge Avenger back up toward the group standing in the lot near Melrose Avenue and Vista Street around 7:10 p.m. after which two men emerged from the vehicle, police said.

Words were apparently exchanged, cops said, and at least one of the men who exited the car pulled a handgun on the group.

But the man in the group — dressed in a blue tank top and who had been holding a beige shopping bag — wasn't about to let the stickup continue. Police said he pulled a gun of his own and fired it at the two assailants "apparently to defend himself and others in his group from the would-be robbery suspects."

After the man in the blue tank top fired his gun, video shows everybody in the parking lot fleeing on foot, and the individual behind the wheel of the vehicle drove it away as well.

Caught!

Police said officers a short time later apprehended the L.A.-based suspects who confronted the group in the parking lot — and both of them were on parole at the time, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, and were booked for attempted robbery.

Nicholas Brown, 22, was shot in the upper left thigh, and 28-year-old Markeil Hayes was shot in the right calf, police said.

Police added that the vehicle's driver is still at large.

Anything else?

LAPD detectives are asking for the public's help in finding the victim and witnesses to assist in the investigation, police said, adding that they are "aggressively addressing a rise in violent crime in the Melrose area over the past year and [are] pursuing all leads involved in this and other crimes."

Homicides in Los Angeles are up 25% this year, with south L.A. seeing a 50% increase in killings, Fox News reported.
