Toxic gas linked to cross-border sewage sparks public health scare in San Diego — but county rejects researchers' findings

San Diego State University and University of California San Diego researchers recently claimed that they have detected dangerously high levels of toxic gas in the Tijuana River Valley.

According to the researchers, they discovered high levels of hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide while conducting air-quality studies in the area, prompting them to temporarily abandon their work over safety concerns and issue a warning to the public. As a result, nearby schools within the South Bay School District have suspended outdoor activities out of "an abundance of caution," citing "heat and high levels of toxins in the air."

'These fumes are causing an immediate and serious threat to the health and safety of residents.'

The reportedly contaminated air has been linked to the high volume of raw sewage flowing from Mexico into the Tijuana River Valley.

Residents have reported an "unbearable" stench in recent weeks, according to the Border Report.

A group of local Democratic lawmakers wrote a joint letter to President Joe Biden (D) and California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) urging them to initiate a state of emergency over the researchers' findings.

"Recent data has made it clear that these fumes are causing an immediate and serious threat to the health and safety of residents of South San Diego, and our community needs additional support," they wrote.

San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas (D) pushed back on the findings during a press conference Tuesday morning. She claimed that there is no public safety concern.

"I want to reassure everyone that this is not an imminent threat, and it's safe to be outside and attend school," Vargas stated, according to KPBS. "Our county experts are actively gathering public health data and conducting research to provide the most accurate information."

Dr. Kim Prather, director of the Center for Aerosol Impacts on Chemistry of the Environment at UC San Diego, responded to Vargas' press conference, claiming that her team discovered "unsafe air quality."

"Vargas's claim directly contradicts not only our calibrated, validated hydrogen sulfide (H2S) data but also the numerous health complaints from South Bay residents, including migraines, respiratory issues, and GI problems. It's deeply concerning that a public official trusted by the community to protect their health would make such a misleading statement based on an unverified set of measurements from an unknown location and device with no critical details," Prather wrote on X.

In February, Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre called the sewage problem "the worst it's ever been" and "the border crisis nobody is talking about." Aguirre claimed that sewage from Mexico has, at times, forced the temporary closures of some California beaches.

No crime occurred when group of illegal aliens attempted to enter school bus, sheriff's office finds

The San Diego Sheriff's Department determined that no crime was committed after a large group of illegal immigrants attempted to board a school bus carrying young children last week.

The sheriff's office told KGTV that none of the individuals forcibly stopped or entered the vehicle and therefore, no criminal charges were filed.

'It was simply a frightening situation because it was unfamiliar to us.'

However, Nicole Cardinale, whose 8-year-old son was sitting at the front of the school bus when the incident occurred, explained that she "doesn't believe the men never made a move to get on the bus," the news outlet wrote.

Last Tuesday, three illegal immigrant males walking along Highway 94 allegedly tried to stop a Jamul-Dulzura Union School District school bus, forcing the driver to go around them, KSWB-TV previously reported.

The following day, 20 individuals allegedly attempted to board another school bus along a different Jamul-Dulzura Union School District route while it was picking up children. Local reports claimed the parents at the bus stop helped the driver prevent the illegal immigrants from entering the vehicle.

In a letter to parents, Superintendent Liz Bystedt noted, "Both incidents involved people either trying to stop or board a bus at a bus stop."

Cardinale called the encounter "really scary" for her son.

"[My son] said these adults — they weren't kids — had backpacks on and they were trying to get on [his bus.] … He said there was a lot of them," she told KSWB. "It's just scary that these kids are put into this situation. If those 20 people would have gotten onto the bus and tried to take over the bus, these kids and the bus driver could have been in real danger."

She noted that the men were "standing in the doorway" of the bus.

"I'm assuming they were communicating with the driver, trying to get a ride," Cardinale said. "Why they thought it was okay to get on school bus? I know there is a language barrier, but they also [need] to have some empathy. … Those are children, and how frightened they possibly were."

The sheriff's department investigated the incident, concluding that no crime was committed.

"It is not uncommon for community volunteers and charitable organizations to provide resources in these parts of the county, some of which operate vehicles similar to school buses," the sheriff's office told KGTV.

A letter from the superintendent read, "It appears that while several individuals approached the bus, there never appeared to be any intent to take over the bus or harm anyone. At no point in time did anyone other than the students enter the bus, or even get close to entering a bus."

"It was simply a frightening situation because it was unfamiliar to us. The Sheriff's office will continue to remain vigilant to this issue and provide extra patrols along the bus routes," Bystedt added.

Border Patrol officials reported that "several were detained" for being in the United States illegally. Those individuals are facing removal processes.

California officials ticket disabled Navy veteran known as the 'Bubble Pirate' for 'littering prohibited fluids'

A disabled Navy veteran turned bubble artist has been ticketed by California officials for "fluid littering."

Sandy Snakenberg, 63, is an entertainer known as the "Bubble Pirate." For more than 10 years, Snakenberg has dressed like a pirate and entertained communities with his creative bubble performances.

'It's not just my livelihood, it’s something that is actually part of the community now.'

"I was just enjoying blowing the simple bubbles that you blow and people walking by were enjoying them," he told KSWB-TV. "I got kind of hooked sharing the joy of it."

Snakenberg, a self-described "bubble-ologist," lives out of his van, where he stores all of his equipment and props.

"I was becoming more involved with bubbles, more professionally, making my own juices, my own devices. I did a TED Talk while in Singapore," Snakenberg told Fox News.

Snakenberg's 2016 TED Talk is titled: "Lessons of the Bubbles." The video is described as Snakenberg's "journey and lessons learned not just from the bubbles but from his observations of others when exposed or re-exposed to their magic."

Snakenberg — who has dyslexia — said he makes his living from his bubble artistry and entertainment.

However, the Bubble Pirate was recently hit with a ticket for the crime of blowing bubbles.

Last week, Snakenberg was performing his usual "Bubble Pirate" show at La Jolla Cove in San Diego, California.

A ranger with the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department issued Snakenberg a ticket for "littering prohibited fluids" on the park grounds.

The Bubble Pirate allegedly asked the park ranger to note on the ticket that the liquid in question was from bubbles, but the officer did not oblige.

A San Diego Parks and Recreation Department spokesperson told Fox News, "The City of San Diego values the rights of community members to engage in expressive activity in City parks, including artistic expression. This does require those engaging in these activities to do so in accordance with other City codes and regulations, including those related to littering and disposal of waste."

The spokesperson continued, "In this instance, Park Rangers attempted to educate the individual numerous times that the residual substances from the bubbles are in violation of the City’s municipal code as it relates to littering (SDMC 63.0102(c)(8) Littering). The individual uses up to six gallons of liquid per day with the residual chemicals ending up in the lawn areas, which can cause damage to the grass."

The spokesperson concluded, "After witnessing numerous violations and receiving complaints from other park users, Rangers issued the lowest level citation available."

The San Diego municipal code for littering states: "It is unlawful to leave or scatter about any boxes, empty or otherwise, waste paper, remains of meals, newspaper, tobacco, remains of any material capable of being smoked, or rubbish of any kind, except that such material and matter may be deposited in receptacles provided for such purpose."

Snakenberg said, "If I thought I was in any way damaging the environment or hurting people, I wouldn't be around very long. I've been doing this for over 10 years."

The Bubble Pirate told the San Diego Union-Tribune, "I'm not doing anything wrong. The rangers said my solutions are harming the grass, but I make it myself and know that it doesn’t harm the environment. I tested it on a friend’s property by pouring it out on the lawn and there was no damage. I have talks with the parents on the safety of my solutions. I’m really big on environmental safety and audience safety.”

Snakenberg noted that he places a tarp in the area where he creates the bubbles and disposes of any excess bubble solution offsite.

"It’s not just my livelihood, it’s something that is actually part of the community now," he told KSWB-TV.

Snakenberg said he wasn’t surprised by the citation because he had been “given a heads-up by the community” that law enforcement had been cracking down on this type of littering.

The Bubble Pirate declared, "I'm not going to quit because I’m not doing any harm. If I was doing something wrong, I wouldn’t be doing it. But I will be coming back against the rangers’ advice."

Snakenberg said on Instagram, "This Bubble Pirate will be continuing public performances at La Jolla cove when I am not otherwise engaged at other events. And (as the officer communicated) will likely get more citations."

Snakenberg is scheduled to appear in court in October.

In May, the city of San Diego began cracking down on yoga classes held at public parks.

A city spokesperson told KGTV-TV:

The City of San Diego’s Municipal Code prohibits groups consisting of four or more people engaged in commercial recreational activities like yoga, fitness classes and dog training from gathering in parks without a permit and can only operate in certain designated areas. Picnics and other gatherings of 50 or more also require a permit in parks, beaches and bay. The applicable municipal code (SDMC 63.0102) has been in effect since 1993, and recent updates to the policy have clarified the activities for which necessary permitting applies. These updates went into effect March 29 and are in place to ensure these public spaces remain safe and accessible to all users at all times. Park Rangers, police and lifeguards have the authority to enforce these codes to ensure public safety in San Diego’s parks and beaches.

Some yoga instructors pushed back against the city and argued that their classes are free to join, but participants can donate if they enjoyed the class.

Mob of 20 illegal aliens reportedly tries to board school bus with young children: 'Really scary'

Some illegal aliens in San Diego, California, recently attempted to board two school buses while they were en route to pick up young children, reports claim.

Two Jamul-Dulzura Union School District bus routes were interrupted this week during separate incidents, according to district officials, KSWB-TV reported.

On Tuesday afternoon, three illegal immigrant males walking along Highway 94 allegedly tried to stop one of the school buses. The bus driver was forced to go around the men.

'These kids and the bus driver could have been in real danger.'

The following morning, a group of 20 illegal immigrants reportedly attempted to board another school bus while it was picking up children on a different route. Parents present for the incident assisted the bus driver in ensuring that the individuals were not able to enter the vehicle.

No injuries were reported for either incident.

Nicole Cardinale, whose 8-year-old son was on the second bus, told KSWB that the encounter was "really scary."

"[My son] said these adults — they weren't kids — had backpacks on and they were trying to get on [his bus.] … He said there was a lot of them," she stated. "It's just scary that these kids are put into this situation. If those 20 people would have gotten onto the bus and tried to take over the bus, these kids and the bus driver could have been in real danger."

Details about either of the encounters are currently limited.

Superintendent Liz Bystedt sent a brief letter to parents explaining what had occurred, writing, "Earlier today I notified transportation families about two recent incidents involving our school buses on Highway 94. Both incidents involved people either trying to stop or board a bus at a bus stop."

She added that she has notified the United States Border Patrol, the San Diego Sheriff's Department, and the California Highway Patrol.

"We will continue to work with law enforcement on the matter," the letter to parents continued. "We have put additional protocols in place and notified parents of bus riders."

Bus drivers have been told to continue to the next stop if they encounter a stop that has illegal immigrants nearby. Parents are asked to meet the bus at the following drop-off location to pick up their children.

Bystedt told parents, "Please stay [vigilant] and if the bus drives by, please follow the bus to pick up your child at the next stop."

Kimberly King with the Sheriff's Department told KSWB, "The San Diego Sheriff's Office was made aware of this incident today. We are conducting a follow up investigation to determine if a criminal act has occurred. The Sheriff's Office takes issues regarding student safety very seriously and are working with the school district in order to keep the students and our community safe."

Jim Desmond, a San Diego County supervisor representing the Fifth District, reacted to news of the incident on social media, writing, "This is what happens when you have open borders. Over 250,000 illegal immigrants have entered San Diego in the past year, and this is just one more example of the chaos we're facing. Thousands continue to pour in every single day."

Desmond called the incidents "horrific," adding that it "deserves an immediate investigation."

"Shut down the border!" he declared.

Comic-Con sting operation busts sex trafficking ring — 1 minor, 9 adult victims rescued

A recent undercover sting operation resulted in the rescue of 10 victims, including one minor, and the arrest of 14 alleged sex buyers at the San Diego Comic-Con, according to a recent press release from the office of Attorney General Rob Bonta (D).

The AG's office, along with the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, sent undercover law enforcement officers on a three-day operation to pose as sex buyers, posting fake advertisements soliciting sex to locate and identify potential victims and carry out the arrests of traffickers. The operation successfully arrested more than a dozen alleged sex buyers and rescued nine adult victims and a 16-year-old girl.

'Coercion and violence which enslaves people for profit.'

"Child Welfare Services and adult and juvenile support service advocates were on scene to provide support as needed," the press release noted.

Bonta explained that sex traffickers use the annual Comic-Con in San Diego and other "large-scale events" as opportunities to exploit victims. Comic-Con draws more than 100,000 attendees.

"These arrests send a clear message to potential offenders that their criminal behavior will not be tolerated," Bonta said. "We are grateful to all our dedicated partners involved in the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, whose collaboration has been invaluable. We take great pride in our office's commitment to uplifting vulnerable Californians by offering them assistance and guidance when they need it most."

San Diego Sheriff Kelly Martinez called human trafficking the most "insidious crime."

"The coercion and violence which enslaves people for profit and places them into forced labor or sex is criminal," Martinez stated. "As the sheriff I support the efforts of all our justice partners in holding perpetrators accountable. I appreciate the focus that was placed on the recent convention to identify and rescue victims of human trafficking."

San Diego Police Chief Wahl remarked, "Working together, teams identified and arrested more than a dozen individuals participating in these illegal acts in our city over the weekend. This successful operation recovered 10 victims of human trafficking, including a girl of just 16 years old. These results show our collective dedication to combatting human trafficking and holding criminals accountable are working."

The San Diego Comic Convention told Fox News Digital it was unaware of the sting operation.

"Obviously, we find this very disturbing, and while we were not made aware of this operation, it is our understanding that the arrests were made outside of the event," the convention stated. "We work closely with a variety of law enforcement entities throughout the year and stand ready to assist in any way we can."

Biden policies lead to 150% capacity at illegal alien holding centers in San Diego

Border Patrol holding centers in the San Diego area remain over capacity despite the Biden administration’s claim that it is clamping down on the influx of illegal crossings at the southern border, the New York Post reported.

The news outlet revealed that holding facilities in the region are at 150% capacity as of Tuesday morning. Based on internal agency data leaked to the Post, the centers are equipped to detain only 1,000 individuals but are currently supporting 1,500 illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile, the administration announced that it plans to shut down ICE’s largest detention center in Dilley, Texas, which can hold 2,400 criminal illegal aliens.

According to the administration, Biden’s June 4 executive order was designed to crack down on illegal crossings; however, the action includes many exemptions. One of the biggest loopholes is that the White House announced separate directives for the San Diego sector.

Just days after the executive order was slated to take effect, Border Patrol agents in Southern California were told to release illegal aliens from most Eastern Hemisphere countries into the interior of the U.S., a memo obtained by the Washington Examiner revealed. Foreign nationals from more than 100 countries, except for Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Moldova, and Kyrgyzstan, are to be issued a notice to appear and released on their own recognizance.

Individuals from the more than 100 Eastern Hemisphere countries are more difficult to deport because their governments do not typically cooperate with U.S. deportation flights.

Manny Bayon, National Border Patrol Council president for the San Diego sector, told the Post that San Diego’s holding centers are still over capacity because illegal aliens who cross unlawfully into the region have a better chance of being allowed to stay in the country.

One Border Patrol agent told the news outlet that agents are seeing illegal aliens from “all over the world.”

“China, India — there’s a lot of Indians, there’s just like a s***-ton — and Central Americans,” the agent stated.

Since Biden’s executive order took effect, the administration has allowed more than 30,000 illegal immigrants to enter the U.S., according to a report from the Post.

“Thousands are still released by the day,” a source told the news outlet. “They get their [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] appointment and they’re gone in the wind. You think they’re going to show up when they know they don’t have a legitimate claim? Of course not.”

Border Patrol sector told to release illegal aliens from most Eastern Hemisphere countries into US

Border Patrol agents in the San Diego sector were recently instructed to release illegal aliens from most Eastern Hemisphere countries into the interior of the United States, according to a memo first obtained by the Washington Examiner.

The internal communication stated that single adults from more than 100 countries in the Eastern Hemisphere who cross into the U.S. illegally through the San Diego sector are to be processed as "NTA/OR," or Notice to Appear/released on Own Recognizance. According to the memo, the individuals are from "hard or very hard to remove countries" that do not cooperate with the U.S.'s deportation efforts.

Illegal aliens from "mandatory referral countries," including Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Moldova, and Kyrgyzstan, are not eligible to be released into the U.S. and request asylum, the memo read.

'This is gaslighting our fellow Americans.'

A senior Border Patrol official told Fox News' Bill Melugin that instruction to allow illegal immigrants from most Eastern Hemisphere countries into the interior of the U.S. was provided only to the San Diego Sector rather than the entire border. According to the official, the illegal aliens will still not be eligible to request asylum.

Department of Homeland Security officials told reporters on Friday that many Eastern Hemisphere countries will not cooperate with the U.S. to take back their citizens, making it difficult to deport the individuals, Fox News Digital reported. Officials stated that they are working with those countries to gain cooperation.

According to the memo, illegal aliens from the Western Hemisphere countries, including Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela, are classified as "easy to remove."

San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents received the memo shortly after President Joe Biden announced a new executive order that the administration claims would crack down on illegal entries amid the ongoing immigration crisis at the southern border. Biden's order would temporarily suspend unlawful border crossings after entries reach an average of over 2,500 per day over seven days. The order carves out numerous exceptions, including for unaccompanied minors, individuals judged to be "victims of severe forms of trafficking," people with medical emergencies, and those who schedule an appointment through the Customs and Border Protection's CBP One app.

On Sunday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) told Fox News Digital that the administration's order will "actually attract and invite even more people to cross the border illegally."

"There's no slowing down of people crossing the border. In fact, it's just accelerating. This is gaslighting our fellow Americans. When Biden gets up and says, 'This is going to stop people from coming across the border,' when he says, 'It's going to secure the border,' in fact, it is making illegal border crossings worse," Abbott stated.

Cop in San Diego resigns after locking himself in patrol car with female suspect — both deny tryst occurred

A San Diego police officer has now resigned from his job after he accidentally locked himself in the backseat of a patrol vehicle with a female suspect.

Late in the evening on August 14, 2023, Officer Anthony Hair, a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, and other officers tracked down two suspects wanted in connection with a stolen vehicle. One of the suspects was a woman who also had a bench warrant out for her arrest.

'When I was waking her up, that’s when I noticed that this door closed on me. That’s when I was trying to kind of open the door.'

The woman, whose name has not been released, was arrested and placed in the back of Hair's patrol car. As the two made their way to the Las Colinas Detention Center, she began making advances on Hair.

"Are you single?" she asked, according to footage captured on Hair's body camera.

When he answered in the affirmative, she then made her intentions clear. "I'm down to f*** right now," she said, according to WKRC.

She informed Hair that she did have a boyfriend. However, she also admitted she had her reasons for propositioning him: "You're not too bad. What's it gonna hurt me if I work the system, you know what I mean? That's the way I see s***."

Hair then warned her to keep such comments to herself. "Don't say that right now," he said, according to the recording. "Don't say that right now because everything is being recorded right now."

Rather than drive directly to the detention center, Hair turned into a neighborhood a few blocks away and parked the vehicle just after 1:30 a.m. on August 15. His body camera was then deactivated.

Approximately 20 minutes later, Hair made a frantic call to a fellow officer. The following is that officer's recollection of their conversation:

I heard and noticed Officer Hair had a panicky voice. I asked him if he was okay. He said, yes, and then asked if I had my patrol car key with me. I asked why he was asking and what did he need. Officer Hair then asked me If I could go meet him. I asked him his location and he said, near Cottonwood. I asked him why he needed me, and he said he would tell me when I got there. He said he was really embarrassed.

Within an hour, a supervisor had come to open the locked patrol vehicle. Traces of semen were later reportedly recovered from the belt Hair wore that night.

Last month, internal affairs began an investigation into the incident. Hair denied engaging in anything inappropriate with the suspect, claiming that she had experienced some kind of medical episode and that he had parked the cruiser and crawled into the backseat to check on her.

"When I was waking her up, that’s when I noticed that this door closed on me. That’s when I was trying to kind of open the door," he said, according to the New York Post.

He also denied deliberately turning off his body camera. Instead, he said it had accidentally popped off when he was exiting the car.

The woman similarly denied that the two had had an assignation that night but indicated that Hair was romantically interested in her. "He wanted to get with me when I was done with the warrant or whatever I got arrested for," she reportedly said.

Despite their denials, Hair decided to resign from the force the day before he was scheduled to have a second interview about the matter. Whether he will face charges in connection with the incident remains unclear.

The SDPD did not respond to the Post's request for comment.
