Senate passes bill to fund the government, including another $12 billion for Ukraine

The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed legislation that would fund the government through mid-December, sending a bill that would avert a government shutdown to the House of Representatives.

The Senate voted 72 to 25 in favor of a continuing resolution to fund the government, including $12 billion in additional aid for Ukraine and hundreds of billions of dollars for the executive agencies carrying out President Joe Biden's agenda. Twenty-two Republicans voted for the bill, which conservative lawmakers had pointed out would fund COVID-19 vaccine mandates for federal employees, Biden's preferred green energy policies, the administration's immigration policies, the Internal Revenue Service funding that Republicans say will add an additional 87,000 IRS agents to the federal workforce, and more.

Biden is expected to sign the bill on Friday, assuming it passes in the House, where Democrats hold the majority. His signature would keep the government open through Dec. 16, when Congress will meet in a lame-duck session after the midterm elections to consider another spending bill. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) unsuccessfully urged his colleagues not to support a Democratic spending bill that would kick the can to a lame-duck Congress.

But neither party wants to be blamed for a government shutdown so close to the November elections. The bill passed and the Senate will not resume session to consider legislation until after the elections, freeing up lawmakers to go home and campaign.

There was a minor controversy earlier this month as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) wanted to include language in the continuing resolution that would speed up the permitting process for both fossil fuel and renewable energy projects. But Manchin was forced to ask Schumer to remove his language from the bill when it became apparent Republicans would not support him. Though some Republicans also wanted faster permitting, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) did not rally support for Manchin's bill in what was largely seen as retribution for Manchin helping Democrats pass the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Senate Republicans have made it very clear they will block legislation to fund the government if it includes bipartisan permitting reform because they’ve chosen to obstruct instead of work in a bipartisan way to achieve something they’ve long claimed they wanted to do,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday as he announced Manchin's language would be removed from the bill.

Manchin said it was "unfortunate that members of the United States Senate are allowing politics to put the energy security of our nation at risk," in a statement released Tuesday.

The spending bill also included an additional $18.8 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is assisting Florida after Hurricane Ian devastated the state's southwest coast.

Dr. Oz trumpets his support for gay marriage and backs the 'Respect for Marriage Act'

Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Republican candidate running for U.S. Senate in the state of Pennsylvania, has openly declared his support for allowing homosexual marriages in the U.S., and signed onto a letter calling for the passage of the "Respect for Marriage Act."

"I'm proud to join this effort with fellow Republicans. I believe that same-sex couples should have the same freedom to get married as straight couples," Oz tweeted on Monday.

His tweet linked to a Washington Post piece which reported that Oz had signed a letter calling for the passage of a gay marriage-related bill. According to the outlet, Oz, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, George W. Bush's daughter Barbara Bush, and GOP U.S. Senate candidate Joe O'Dea who is seeking election in Colorado, are just some of the hundreds of individuals who have signed the letter.

In the 2015 the Obergefell v. Hodges opinion, the U.S. Supreme Court compelled states to recognize and allow same-sex marriages.

The "Respect for Marriage Act" would prohibit states from denying "full faith and credit to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding of any other State pertaining to a marriage between 2 individuals, on the basis of the sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin of those individuals."

Many prominent businesses — including Apple, Amazon, Starbucks, Twitter, and many others — have signed a letter calling for the passage of the measure.

Responding to Oz's tweet, Steve Deace, host of BlazeTV's "Steve Deace Show," called for Oz to appear on the program and engage in debate about the "godless legislation."

Conservative commentator Michael Knowles tweeted, "PA Rs should strongly consider staying home in Nov. This guy is such a loser. Is there any evidence he'd even reliably side with a GOP majority? If cons not only fail to conserve but actively cheer on the destruction of the basic political institution, who cares if they win?"

"This is how the @SenateGOP wants to head into the election… not talking about crime, gas/electricity, borders/cartels/fentanyl, & vax firings all funded by this same GOP… this… Idiots," Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas tweeted.

'When will this end?' As Americans get soaked by skyrocketing inflation, Sen. Manchin says that 'inflation is a tax and ... these taxes on Americans are completely out of control'

As Americans continue to get hammered by skyrocketing inflation, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia noted that the Biden administration, the Federal Reserve, and elected officials have failed to adequately tackle the issue.

"Let me be clear, inflation is a tax and today’s historic inflation data tells another chilling story about how these taxes on Americans are completely out of control," Manchin said in a statement. "Hard earned wages and financial savings are disappearing faster every month as prices continue to climb, while the pain and frustration of spending more on everyday items lingers over us all, especially among those who can afford it the least."

My statement on consumer inflation rising to 8.5%, the largest 12 month increase in four decades:pic.twitter.com/qlKlDVU2Vu
— Senator Joe Manchin (@Senator Joe Manchin) 1649783325

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released consumer price index data on Tuesday noting that the all-items index had increased by 8.5% during a one-year period.

"When will this end? It is a disservice to the American people to act as if inflation is a new phenomenon. The Federal Reserve and the Administration failed to act fast enough, and today’s data is a snapshot in time of the consequences being felt across the country. Instead of acting boldly, our elected leaders and the Federal Reserve continue to respond with half-measures and rhetorical failures searching for where to lay the blame," Manchin declared in the statement.

The lawmaker noted that unless action is taken, the situation will grow much worse.

"The inflation number today is only the beginning unless we take immediate action to address the pain being felt across our nation. This is one problem facing the American people that one political party alone cannot fix," Manchin said.

"Here is the truth, we cannot spend our way to a balanced, healthy economy and continue adding to our $30 trillion national debt. Getting inflation under control will require more aggressive action by a Federal Reserve that waited too long to act. It demands the Administration and Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, support an all-the-above energy policy because that is the only way to bring down the high price of gas and energy while attacking climate change," the senator said.

If soaring inflation persists, the issue could prove to be a significant political liability for Democrats heading into the 2022 midterm elections later this year.

But GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas noted that Republicans have also contributed to the problem: "The @SenateGOP & @HouseGOP jumping on the 'Biden Inflation' train because they see blood in the electoral waters are a little rich… given dumpster fire of GOP’s massive spending & authorization of big programs for decades now…," Roy tweeted.

Horowitz: Senate GOP helps codify Biden’s mandates by supporting his budget

My colleague Steve Deace likes to say, “Democrats INSPIRE their base to get what they want, while Republicans CONSPIRE against their base to get what they want.” That is exactly what happened in the U.S. Senate Thursday night.

Democrats needed to pass Biden’s budget, funding all the mandates and immoral activities of executive agencies. Republicans needed to give their base the impression they were fighting the mandates while concurrently ensuring that the budget passes. So, they hatched a plan to guarantee that one more Republican than Democrat would be absent, thereby assuring that even if they held an up-or-down vote (with a simple plurality), it would lose.

Democrat leader Chuck Schumer agreed to allow Sen. Mike Lee’s amendment to come up without a 60-vote threshold because four Republicans were out of town: Mitt Romney (R-Utah), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Richard Burr (R-N.C.). This allowed every Republican present in the chamber to vote for his amendment, which would have defunded the vaccine mandates. However, as always, it came up one vote short and failed, 46-47. The Cruz amendment, which would have blocked school vaccine mandates, failed 44-49, with GOP Sens. Collins and Blunt joining the Democrats.

Some might focus their ire solely on those four GOP senators who were absent. Undoubtedly, they should be condemned for missing such an important point. But the broader picture reveals that the problem is not just in a few GOP senators but the entire leadership. They only agreed to hold these votes because they knew (or ensured) there would be one more Republican than Democrat missing in the chamber. That was the perfect outcome for them, whereby they got to hold a protest vote for the base but give away their leverage. This is proven by the fact that the other amendment they voted on – a balanced budget requirement by Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) – actually did “win” by 47-45 (Democrat Sens. Manchin and Sinema joined), but that was cleverly set at a 60-vote threshold because they knew they needed it. It’s all kabuki theater.

Word on the Street? @SenateGOP leadership was coordinating with Schumer and giving green light when votes could occur. This was all staged. What you see is all a show. You will have to take back America yourselves… you cannot count on GOP “leadership.”https://twitter.com/chiproytx/status/1494455041322799104 …
— Chip Roy (@Chip Roy) 1645145276

But the real revealing vote was the cloture vote to proceed with the bill knowing that they didn’t have the votes present to pass the amendment. Seventeen Republicans, including all of leadership, voted for cloture, thereby relinquishing the leverage, knowing they could never secure the votes to change the budget bill. Those Republicans were: Rubio (R-Fla.), Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Rounds (R-S.D.), Capito (R-W.V.), Moran (R-Kan.), Shelby (R-Ala.), Cassidy (R-La.), Murkowski (R-Alaska), Tillis (R-N.C.), Cornyn (R-Texas), Portman (R-Ohio), Wicker (R-Miss.), Blunt (R-Mo.), Collins (R-Maine), Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Kennedy (R-La.), and McConnell (R-Ky.). Ultimately, 19 Republicans voted for final passage of the continuing resolution, which passed 65-27: the original 17 plus Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Rounds (S.D.).

The issue is right, the timing is impeccable, and the politics of the matter are auspicious. Never has it been so easy for Republicans to do the right thing and demonstrate to the voters why they should control Congress next year. Yet Mitch McConnell, the great leader waiting for us on the other side of this momentous election, would have none of it.

On the one hand, our government is still immorally masking children on planes, destroying people’s jobs over an increasingly dangerous and expired shot, and even plotting to inject babies and toddlers. Thus, there’s never been a riper issue over which to have a government funding fight. On the other hand, the public has become tired of these mandates even in blue states, Biden’s approval rating is so low, and there is a growing international movement for freedom against creeping authoritarianism within Western (former) democracies. So Republicans will take “yes” for an answer and filibuster the budget bill until all of the mandates are defunded, right? Well, Mitch McConnell is giving you a sneak peak of what his leadership will look like when in the majority.

Already, earlier this week, Mitch told reporters. "I think it’ll all be worked out. There’s no danger of a government shutdown.” Oh, he worked it out, all right.

So, he’s not concerned about the shutdown of our lives, liberty, and property from COVID fascism. He’s not concerned about the government funding billions in more human experiments on behalf of Pfizer while criminalizing real doctors who save lives. He’s not concerned about funding a government that is allying with the despotic Trudeau regime. He’s concerned about shutting down those who shut us down.

Ultimately, only nine senators have signed on to either the Rep. Chip Roy letter or the Sen. Mike Lee letter calling for a defunding of the mandates in the budget bill: Mike Lee (R-Utah), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), Ted Cruz (Texas), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), James Risch (Idaho), and Kevin Cramer (N.D.). Even with Republicans hopelessly in the minority in the House, nearly a quarter of them voted to advance the current CR, which would extend government funding from the Feb. 18 deadline through March 11. The Freedom Caucus has endorsed a defund fight, but where is House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who would be the potential speaker next year? He actually voted for the bill!

With the momentum from the truckers’ protest now commencing in the United States, you will never find a more politically auspicious moment to fight on a more important issue. According to a recent poll, Joe Biden’s net approval rating is -22%. Worse, he is at just 22% approval among independents, 43% among Hispanics, and even among black voters, just 62% approve, which is unprecedented for a Democrat president. In most of the states where Republicans represent, Biden is well under 30% approval. In Mitch McConnell’s Kentucky, for example, Biden is sitting at just 23% approval. What exactly are Republicans scared of?

Democrats are so unpopular that three woke school board members were recalled in a special election in the liberal bastion of San Francisco. Even in Washington state, the Democrat-controlled Senate approved a bill to limit the governor’s emergency powers.

How could Republicans, with the power to block the mandates in the Senate, not attempt to bring this fight to a head when they are mandating a shot that clearly has many safety concerns? Just two weeks ago, a CDC advisory committee proposed extending the length of time between the two doses of the vaccines to mitigate some of the risk of myocarditis. So, if they acknowledge these safety considerations, how can any of this be in the realm of a mandate?

Why did McConnell, as leader, not encourage his caucus to vote to defund and demand that everyone remain in Washington to filibuster the bill?

The bottom line is that McConnell and his compatriots fear a government shutdown more than a shutdown of our lives and liberty. And the dirty little secret is that none of this will change, even with the most historic midterm victories imaginable. Even if Republicans win sizable majorities in Congress, Biden is still president for another two years. The only leverage they have is to harness public sentiment, the Constitution, and righteous indignation and tether their priorities to must-pass bills, such as budgets, debt ceiling increases, and defense authorization bills. But McConnell cares more about upending the Senate process than the Biden administration upending human rights. So, what exactly is the point of a GOP Congress?

McConnell, for his part, is tacitly latching on to some of the platitudes of his base.

Needless school closures. Unscientific child mask mandates. A woke war against merit-based schools and standards.

The far left even opposes basic K-12 transparency. They want parents sidelined and silenced.

Republicans stand with families. The party of parents has your back.
— Leader McConnell (@Leader McConnell) 1645032497

However, how can he have their back, if this time he’s not even promising to repeal biomedical fascism “root and branch” as he did with Obamacare? And we all know how that iteration of McConnell’s “all talk and no action” worked out.

Not only will Republicans refuse to lead the polls, they are incapable of even following them.

'Go straight to hell': Chip Roy delivers tongue-lashing to fellow Congress members after House panel backs requiring women to register for draft

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) blasted fellow Congress members, Democrats and Republicans, in a no-holds-barred harangue. Roy unleashed on his fellow lawmakers after the House Armed Services Committee approved an amendment that would require women to register for the military draft.

On Wednesday night, the House Armed Services Committee voted 35-24 to approve an amendment that would expand registration for the Selective Service System to women. The amendment, led by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), would remove references in the current law requiring a "male citizen" register for the Selective Service System and replace it with "citizen." Three Republicans voted with Democrats in supporting the amendment – Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Jack Bergman of Michigan, and Patrick Fallon of Texas.

The panel's approval of the amendment to require females to register for the draft did not sit well with Roy. The Texas Republican blasted the decision, and said that he didn't trust Congress "to do anything at all," let alone to draft his daughter.

"Message to Republicans & Democrats - including @HouseGOP & @SenateGOP colleagues, I do not trust you to do anything at all, much less say you will draft my daughter to 'non combat' roles," Roy began his Twitter diatribe.

"Why don't I trust you? Let's see. Maybe it's because you (both R&D) have amassed $30 trillion in debt and are blowing through trillions more all while giving lip service to 'balanced budgets' for decades," he continued.

Roy then attacked both political parties for not securing the U.S. southern border, which has affected his home state of Texas. "Fentanyl pouring into our communities… murders, rapes… dead migrants on ranches… all in the false name of compassion," he proclaimed in the lengthy Twitter thread.

Roy claimed fellow Congress members "politicized a virus," adding that Americans were supplied with "wildly varying propaganda about it's origins, the nature of it's communicability, the efficacy of your mandated measures in response including vaccines, and ignoring of treatments."

He then alleged that Congress "destroyed our healthcare system and made it impossible to get the doctor of our choice at a remotely affordable price all in the false name of 'coverage.'"

Roy mentioned how politicians kept Americans in Afghanistan for nearly 20 years, the longest war in U.S. history, and leaders failed to produce an end game to ensure victory. Roy delivered a tongue-lashing to President Joe Biden over his chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal, "All while our troops sacrificed, and we set the stage for a gutless President to surrender and empower our enemies."

The congressman was furious that critical race theory was given an opportunity to be taught in classrooms.

"Maybe its because you've funded education bureaucrat after education bureaucrat to teach our kids that American is evil and racist, to take God out of our schools, and otherwise make it impossible for parents to safely turn their children over to the schools," he tweeted on Thursday.

"Maybe it's because you've (both R&D) caused America, despite sitting on a vast reserve of energy supply, to render us less secure economically and less secure against our enemies to appease institutional investors and the Acela corridor cocktail circuit," Roy wrote.

"Now you - including likely 28 GOP House members voting for an NDAA last night to do so - want to draft my daughter and just 'trust you' not to put them into combat? All of DC - all of it - can go straight to hell," Roy concluded with the hashtag "DontDraftOurDaughters."

When a Twitter user proposed abolishing the military draft entirely, Roy sternly responded, "Abolish the draft if you want. But under no circumstances will you draft our wives and daughters. Total, complete, bulls***."

Liberal Hollywood celebrities suffer complete meltdowns over Trump's acquittal, deem Republicans as 'traitors'

The Senate voted to acquit former President Donald Trump on a charge of incitement of insurrection for the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. Liberal Hollywood celebrities suffered complete meltdowns over the results of the impeachment trial.

All of the Democratic senators and seven Republicans voted to convict Trump, resulting in a 57 to 43 vote, 10 short of the 67 votes needed to secure a conviction against Trump.

The hashtag #43Traitors trended on Twitter after Trump's acquittal, which was full of rage toward the 43 Republicans who voted to acquit the former president. In the U.S., traitors who are convicted of treason are subject to "suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years."

Twitter reactions by several left-wing celebrities labeled the 43 Republican lawmakers who voted to acquit as "traitors."
