'Narcissistic monster' cardiologist gets 158 years in prison for drugging, raping 'dozens' of women he met on dating apps

A former Colorado cardiologist learned his fate after being convicted of drugging and raping "dozens or more" women he met on dating apps.

Judge Eric Johnson sentenced 37-year-old Stephen Matthews to 158 years in prison — the maximum sentence for his crimes. Matthews had been charged with 38 counts in connection with what prosecutors said were patterns of alleged sexual assaults. He was convicted on 35 charges, including eight sexual assault convictions in August. Matthews also was ordered to register as a sex offender.

'So much suffering, none of it deserved.'

Matthews’ victims and their families inside the courtroom applauded the longer-than-life prison sentence, according to the New York Post.

"Evidence in this case is overwhelming," Judge Eric Johnson said during sentencing. "Mr. Matthews, you know, you have diminished this world. You have dimmed many of its lights. You've hurt our society, and it's a darker place because of you."

The judge added, according to KMGH-TV, "It would be improper — it would depreciate what you have done, the heinousness of your crimes — if you did not serve a sentence for each victim individually."

Johnson continued, "And in here today, there is a room full of pain. And this is pain that you have caused your victims. So much suffering, none of it deserved."

The judge said Matthews "even managed to ruin dating applications" by causing young girls and young women to fear dating apps "as another danger zone."

Johnson told the victims, "You were believed. The verdict said that."

The district attorney filed charges in connection with 11 victims — nine of whom said they were sexually assaulted.

Between 2019 and 2023, prosecutor Victoria Kelley said she was certain there were “dozens or more” victims of Matthews' sexual assaults.

“This guy is one of the most prolific serial rapists in the history of the state of Colorado,” said former Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.

One of the victims said, "We are now a powerful army of survivors — and you are nothing." She described Matthews as a “narcissistic monster” and a “serial rapist.”

Matthews was first arrested in March 2023 after a woman filed a report with the Denver Police Department saying that during a date he drugged and sexually assaulted her. Matthews was arrested again in May 2023 after nine more women came forward with similar allegations against the doctor.

Prosecutors said Matthews preyed on his victims and had a disturbing pattern to his sexual assaults.

After matching on dating apps such as Hinge and Tinder, Matthews would set up dates at public places such as parks, bars, and restaurants that were in a close proximity to the former doctor’s home.

'I knew that my ability to control my body was quickly disappearing, and if I did not leave within minutes, I didn't think I would ever be able to leave.'

Some victims said Matthews claimed he had to go back to his house nearby to walk his dog. Matthews allegedly would ask the women to play board games and then gave his victims alcohol. The women said they suffered large memory gaps after having the drinks.

One victim said she agreed to go to his house to let his dog out. Once inside, she used the bathroom, and he had mixed a drink for her that she never asked for.

"I didn't want to be rude and didn't want to offend him so I took the drink," she said.

After drinking about a quarter of the drink, the woman quickly began to feel physically ill, her speech was slurred, and she began losing her memory and her motor skills.

"I remember at one point falling all the way to the ground and looking up at him as he was about to film me," the victim said.

She said the Matthews put his arm around her neck and shoulders and put her in a headlock, then pulled her head back to forcibly kiss her, which she said was "painful."

"I felt like I had to get out," she said. "I knew that my ability to control my body was quickly disappearing and if I did not leave within minutes, I didn't think I would ever be able to leave."

She ran from the cardiologist's home without her coat, purse, and shoes.

The victim got into an Uber vehicle and vomited "uncontrollably" while in the car. Several other women said they also vomited after Matthews drugged them.

Another victim was drugged and then handcuffed to a sofa inside the former doctor's house.

“She talked with [a detective] about the horrific things she remembers,” prosecutor Bree Beasley told the jury. “She remembers brief periods of time where she wakes up handcuffed, and she’s naked on the defendant’s sofa and wakes up vomiting.”

Another victim said within an hour and 27 minutes, Matthews drugged her, filmed her as he assaulted her, and put her into a rideshare car that took her home. She had suffered a head injury, and her underwear was ripped.

“You drugged me and raped me and manipulated me into thinking it was my fault,” one of the victims said.

One of the victims added during Matthews' sentencing, "This was methodical. This wasn’t about consent. This wasn’t about sex. It was about control. He used his position and the title of former doctor to abuse trust with myself and others."

Matthews did not speak at his sentencing hearing. His attorney, Douglas Cohen, said that was because his client plans to appeal his conviction.

Kids' magician arrested on child porn charges, allegedly smashed thumb drives after tipster found girl's underwear at magic shop

A kids' magician was arrested on child pornography charges after a tipster discovered a pair of girl's underwear at his magic shop in New Jersey, according to court documents. The tipster also found a bag of thumb drives at the magic shop and the magician smashed them with a hammer, according to the affidavit.

Scott Morley, 48, was arrested on May 15 for possession of images of child sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

The Morris County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement that Morley was released from jail on pre-trial supervision. The conditions of his release include no unsupervised internet usage, no unsupervised contact with minors under the age of 18, and remaining in the state of New Jersey.

Morley was a magician targeting children and owned the Morley's Magic Theater in Butler, New Jersey. The magic shop reportedly has recently closed down. The theater's website and Facebook page have been scrubbed.

On April 12, a tipster reported allegations against Morley to the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce.

The tipster was allegedly hired by Morley to paint the interior of Morley's Magic Theater, and completed the job in 2022.

During the renovation, the tipster found "a bag of thumb drives and a pair of children's female underwear," according to court documents.

The tipster said they confronted Morley about the USB drives and underwear, and Morley "took a hammer and destroyed" the thumb drives, according to the affidavit.

On April 12, a detective interviewed the tipster and contacted Morley.

The Patch reported Morley told the detective that he had an interest in child porn dating back to 1996, and allegedly possessed approximately 50 "questionable" images on his cell phone.

According to charging documents, Morley told the detective that he preferred child pornography involving "young ones."

Court docs revealed that Morley "stated on several occasions that the kid's underwear are a part of his fantasy" and that he gets sexual gratification from the illicit photos.

Officials obtained a search warrant and found several images of pre-pubescent children engaged in sexual acts on his devices, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Morley's estranged wife, Britni Morley, was reportedly involved in her husband's business since 2014 and also sits on the Butler Borough Council.

Britni Morley has not been charged with any crimes.

The New York Post reported that the Morleys have two young daughters, and all four performed in the magic show until late last year.

The outlet reported that some residents of Butler are going to demand Britni Morley resign from the council at the next meeting on June 18. They are suggesting that the wife knew of her husband's alleged child sex crimes before his arrest.

Britni Morley’s divorce attorney, Andrew DeLaney, said, "Any suggestions of wrongdoing on her part are baseless, disgusting, and ultimately destructive to the criminal justice process. We look to conclude the divorce so that my client can focus on raising her two children and providing for them financially and emotionally."

Anyone with information about this investigation is urged to contact the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force of the Sex Crimes / Child Endangerment Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office at 973-285-6200.

Former teacher arrested for alleged rape of teen boy after routine traffic stop reveals shocking allegations

A routine traffic stop exposed shocking allegations against a former teacher from Idaho. The ex-teacher is accused of having sex with a minor and plying the teenage boy with alcohol and marijuana.

An officer with the Saint Anthony Police Department pulled over a vehicle for having no visible tail lights on Nov. 6, according to court documents. A teenage boy was reportedly in the driver's seat during the traffic stop. Police determined that the car belonged to 36-year-old Jessica Lawson.

East Idaho News reported, "The teenager told the officer that Lawson had allowed him to drive her car 'due to her being too drunk to drive,' according to police reports. Court documents say the minor admitted to having marijuana and was driven home by the officer."

In the morning, the parents of the minor contacted the Saint Anthony Police Department to report that their son had an improper relationship with Lawson — a former teacher at South Fremont High School.

The boy alleged that Lawson got drunk, and she provided him with marijuana before the two had sex.

According to KIFI-TV, "Lawson later called the boy's mother and admitted to picking him up, driving him to her home and giving him alcohol."

Court documents say Lawson admitted to picking the teen up from his house, taking him to her house, and providing him with alcohol. However, she reportedly denied supplying marijuana to the boy but admitted that she had the drug in her home. Lawson allegedly denied that "anything else had occurred."

Police later arrested Lawson. She was charged with two felony counts of rape of a victim between 16 and 17 years old and whom the perpetrator was three or more years older than, as well as a felony count of controlled substance delivery, and the misdemeanor of dispensing alcohol to a minor, according to online records.

Lawson was booked into the Madison County Jail, and her bond is set at $250,000. Lawson has been ordered not to have any contact with the victim.

If convicted, Lawson faces up to life behind bars.

A spokesperson for the Freemont County School District told Law & Crime that Lawson had worked as a high school teacher from 2021 to the spring of 2023.

Lawson is no longer listed on the school’s staff page.

Ex-social worker, already accused of sexually abusing 13-year-old, now faces intimidation charges after showing up at boy's home with gun

The 24-year-old former social worker from Ohio is accused of engaging in sexual conduct with a teenager is now accused of showing up at the boy's home with a gun.

As Blaze News previously reported, Payton Shires was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old boy after the victim's mother suggested "something inappropriate was happening between her son and Ms. Shires after seeing messages asking if he had deleted the videos and asking if his mom had seen the videos or messages."

She informed police of the suspicions on Sept. 27.

Police conducted a forensic evaluation of the minor's cell phone, and allegedly found a video of the boy and Shires engaging in sexual conduct. The 13-year-old allegedly told police that he had sex with his counselor in various places in Columbus on numerous occasions in September.

Shires purportedly admitted on a three-way phone call later on with the boy's mother and detectives to engaging in sexual activity with the minor.

WSYX reported, "A 24-year-old social worker charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a 13-year-old boy she was counseling is now accused of showing up to the victim's home with a gun."

Charging documents said that the mother of the 13-year-old boy – who was not home at the time – saw Shires on surveillance video inside her home. The mother reportedly contacted the police.

In the police report, a detective said officers arrived at the alleged victim's home shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Officers allegedly saw Shires on the front porch of the home. Police said Shires threatened self-harm with a gun.

SWAT team members and the Columbus Division of Police took Shires into custody on Friday without incident.

The mother later allegedly informed police that she had received a phone call from Shires, who purportedly said she wanted to die by suicide and kill the mother.

A detective wrote that Shires believed they "ruined her life and took everything from her."

Shires, of Mount Sterling in Madison County, now faces two charges of felony third-degree victim intimidation.

Woman of prominent Virginia family accused of sending child porn and attempting to sex traffic little girl, ex-husband federal judge wants full custody of young daughters

A woman of a prominent Virginia family has been accused of distributing child pornography and attempting to sex traffic minors. The woman's ex-husband – who is a federal judge – has demanded that he get full custody of the couple's young daughters.

Eleanor Hunton Hoppe of Charlottesville allegedly sent child porn to an undercover government agent.

In February, Hoppe started chatting online with an undercover agent on an unnamed "fetish website," according to court documents.

The mother of two is accused of sending the agent a 30-second video and three still images of young, underage girls being sexually abused by men.

Hoppe allegedly "verified" her identity by sending a photo of her partial face with herself giving thumbs with one of her breasts exposed.

During the reported month-long communication, she allegedly told the agent that she was interested in "taboo parenting."

The agent allegedly told Hoppe that he had an 8-year-old daughter. After hearing about the alleged sexual abuse the man had committed against his fictional daughter, Hoppe reportedly said that she wanted to cross state lines to meet the child at a hotel in Warrenton, Virginia.

WRIC-TV reported, "Prior to the arranged date, Hoppe allegedly said that she would bring a pink silk robe for the child, sending a photograph and writing, 'Her big girl robe for tonight.'"

According to the complaint, Hoppe told the undercover agent, "I can't wait and then of course, putting her to bed and waking her up to do a few extra things will be so fun."

Before the meetup, Hoppe allegedly wrote to the undercover agent, "If I were you, I'd start building up Thursday telling her that you know it's gonna be super fun we're gonna hang out with an old friend of yours."

On March 20, Hoppe allegedly went to the hotel to meet the undercover agent and was arrested. According to court documents, Hoppe told FBI agents that she arranged the meeting "in order to help [the agent’s] child."

Law enforcement reportedly found a pink silk robe inside Hoppe's car.

The 45-year-old mother was charged with the distribution of child pornography and attempted child sex trafficking. If convicted, the child sex crime charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and up to life in prison.

On April 4, Hoppe pleaded not guilty to the two charges against her.

The Daily Mail reported that Hoppe's ex-husband is a magistrate judge at United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. Following the arrest of Eleanor, Joel Hoppe has reportedly demanded full custody of the former couple's two daughters, aged 10 and 12.

During the divorce proceedings, the 46-year-old judge accused his wife of cheating and bringing a sexual partner to their marital home with their young daughters present.

The mother reportedly worked in child advocacy.

Detention officer caught on video engaging in improper sexual behavior with inmate after shakedown at Georgia jail unearths contraband phone

A Georgia detention officer is facing more than a dozen charges stemming from an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. Video shows the detention officer engaging in improper sexual behavior with an inmate, according to police. The video was reportedly discovered on a contraband phone that was found during a shakedown at the Fulton County Jail.

A shakedown took place at the Fulton County Jail on Jan. 28, according to an arrest warrant obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The search effort unearthed 11 contraband cellphones. One of the illegal phones reportedly contained video of a detention officer, Kawana Jenkins, 36, engaging in lewd behavior with an inmate.

In the video, Jenkins is reportedly sitting on the lap of Jamal Ward — an inmate accused of murder. Jenkins allegedly is seen licking and kissing the inmate's face. According to the arrest warrant, Jenkins supplies Ward with a pair of Cartier glasses.

In March, another phone was confiscated from the jail, and that device allegedly also had a video of Jenkins engaging in improper sexual behavior with an inmate, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jenkins is purportedly seen on video licking and sucking Ward's finger.

Jenkins was arrested on Monday after she was identified as the detention officer in the risqué video. WSB-TV reported that Jenkins was terminated and charged with five counts of violation of oath by a public officer, two counts of improper sexual contact by an employee or agent, two counts of reckless conduct, two counts of cruelty to inmates, and one count of giving an inmate a prohibited item without authorization.

Jenkins was booked into the jail where she used to work. Her bond was set at $135,000.

Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat said in a statement, "As Sheriff of Fulton County, I am committed to transparency and to holding each and every employee accountable to [the] oath they have taken to protect and serve our community. The actions of this one individual are certainly not a reflection of the men and women of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. The vast majority of employees are to be commended for their integrity, commitment to service and the work they do day in and day out."

Jenkins had been an employee of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office since December 2019.

Afghanistan evacuee accused of sexually assaulting 12-year-old New Mexico boy, punching child in the face: Officials

An Afghanistan national who escaped the Middle Eastern country during the Biden administration's tumultuous evacuation has been charged with a child sex crime and violent assault of a 12-year-old boy in New Mexico.

On Sept. 21, Shah Mahmood Selab, 35, was charged in federal court with coercion and enticement of a minor. Selab faces a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison if he is convicted.

On Aug. 12, Selab allegedly approached a 12-year-old boy at Youngs Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Selab reportedly conversed with the boy who was sitting on a bench at the park – located near a middle school.

"Selab began asking the victim personal questions, and then invited the victim to sit with him on another bench in the shade," the Department of Justice news release stated. "After moving to the other bench, Selab allegedly used his cellphone to show the victim photos and videos that were sexual in nature. Selab allegedly touched the victim inappropriately."

The boy attempted to walk away, but Selab followed him and "punched him in the face multiple times," according to the DOJ. The Afghan evacuee reportedly asked the boy to get into his vehicle and offered him $20 to allow Selab to touch him.

"The victim attempted to call 911 and retreated to the restrooms where he closed himself in a stall," the DOJ said. "The complaint alleges that Selab followed the victim into the restrooms and pulled him from the stall. Selab allegedly locked the restroom door to prevent the victim from leaving, began kissing the victim’s face, and put a $20 bill in the victim’s hand. Selab also allegedly attempted to force the victim to touch Selab."

Someone purportedly walked into the restroom and knocked on the door of the stall, which allowed the victim to escape Selab.

Fox News reported on Friday that Selab was an Afghanistan national – a detail that was not noted in the Department of Justice release. The outlet said, "Selab was paroled into the United States in November 2021."

The office of Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-N.M.) confirmed with law enforcement that Selab was an Afghan national who was paroled into the U.S. through Operation Allies Welcome – the Biden administration's effort to resettle Afghanistan nationals into the United States. An estimated 88,500 Afghanistan nationals were relocated to the U.S. through Operation Allies Welcome after the botched Afghanistan evacuation.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Selab was paroled into the U.S. on Nov. 18, 2021, at Philadelphia International Airport.

The National Immigration Forum defines parole as: "An available tool under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) that allows certain individuals to enter the U.S. and temporarily stay without an immigrant or non-immigrant visa."

Upon hearing of the accused crime, ICE lodged a detainer on Selab, who the agency confirmed was a 35-year-old Afghan national, after his arrest.

ICE lodges detainers on "individuals who have been arrested on criminal charges and who ICE has probable cause to believe are removable non-citizens."

ICE said in a statement, "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is committed to safe and effective enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws and continues to focus its limited resources on the cases of greatest importance to national interest and public safety."

Herrell told Fox News, "This is a terrible crime, enabled by the complete lack of vetting and transparency in the wake of Joe Biden’s Afghanistan retreat. Our government should be protecting the families of New Mexico, not importing twisted individuals who prey on children. That is why last year I pushed for thorough vetting of migrants that the Biden administration has brought to our communities, and why I continue to fight for accountability."

Earlier this month, the DHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) found that the department granted parole to Afghan evacuees who "were not fully vetted" following the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) did not always have critical data to properly screen, vet, or inspect the evacuees," read the report by DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari. "We determined some information used to vet evacuees through U.S. Government databases, such as name, date of birth, identification number, and travel document data, was inaccurate, incomplete, or missing."

The investigation found that because of the lack of vetting, "DHS may have admitted or paroled individuals into the United States who pose a risk to national security and the safety of local communities."

Video captures the moment Texans help 17-year-old girl escape sex trafficker, now the pimp will be in prison for 59 years

Surveillance video captured the moment that a pimp battered a teen girl in a parking lot in Texas. Thankfully, onlookers confronted the abuser and helped the teenager escape the dangerous situation.

In January, Ricky Stevenson brought a 17-year-old girl to a nail salon in Plano, Texas. As they were leaving, the two engaged in an apparent argument. Stevenson stomps his foot. Then the 29-year-old Stevenson punches the girl in the face – causing the teen to fall to the ground and hit her head.

The girl lays helpless on the sidewalk at Plano's Shops at Legacy. A man who witnessed the assault walks toward the situation.

Stevenson snatches the teen off the ground, drags her, and then forcefully shoves her into the passenger seat of a Cadillac. He slams the car door and races to the driver's side while the witness stands nearby.

The teen opens the door and tries to run, but Stevenson grabs the sex trafficking victim and violently tosses her back in the car.

Now, more witnesses gather around the commotion.

The girl exits the vehicle again, but now there are too many people watching for Stevenson to continue his abuse. Stevenson speeds off.

Law enforcement finally arrested Stevenson.

Earlier this month, Stevenson was convicted of trafficking women, assault, and aggravated kidnapping.

Stevenson had previous criminal convictions of assault-family violence by impeding breathing and assault-family violence with a previous conviction, according to WFAA.

Stevenson was sentenced to 59 years in prison.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis told KTVT, "It's a parent’s worst nightmare for their own child to be forcibly prostituted by a human trafficker. We've now secured justice by forcing that trafficker to pay the consequences."

Willis said Stevenson kidnapped the girl when she was only 16 years old. There were reportedly two other females who were forced into prostitution by the pimp.

Stevenson openly boasted on social media that he was a pimp. He even bragged about forcing his victims to get loyalty tattoos and threatening them if they attempted to leave.

Willis commended the Texans who got involved in the brutal attack in the parking lot, "I'm so proud of those citizens that were there and didn't run away and didn't turn a blind eye."

Hawaii teacher bragged about sex with 13-year-old boy during school lunch breaks, shared child porn with fellow teacher: Feds

A Hawaii teacher shared child porn with a fellow teacher and bragged about having sex with a 13-year-old boy during school lunch breaks, according to federal prosecutors.

Alden Bunag was arrested on Wednesday by FBI agents at an Oahu high school – where he worked as a summer school teacher, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. Honolulu FBI agents also executed a search warrant at Bunag's home.

Bunag was charged with distributing child pornography.

The Hawaii public school teacher reportedly sent more than 3,300 messages to another teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Included in the messages were photos and videos of child porn, according to federal court documents. The teacher in Philadelphia was arrested in October.

KHON-TV reported, "The documents added that 'Bunag claimed to have sex with (the boy) at the school during lunch breaks… Described (the boy) as a former student and knew that he was a minor at the time.'"

Court records said that Bunag confessed to law enforcement that he recorded his sexual encounters with the 13-year-old boy – who was a former student – and sent the videos to others through the Telegram messenger app.

The outlet added, "Records said, 'he also admitted to distributing the video recording of his sexual contact… admitted to distributing child pornography involving other minor victims.'"

Bunag appeared in federal court on Thursday. He will remain in custody until his next hearing on June 21.

The Pearl City High School listed "Alden Bunag" as a teacher in a cached version of the school's website, but he is not listed as a teacher in the current listing of staff.

A former student told Hawaii News Now, "It's absolutely disgusting. To be honest, though, I wouldn’t put it past him just because he was an odd guy."

Another former student said, "Definitely was very friendly with all of the kids, especially the male students."

The former student added that Bunag would offer to take senior portraits for students “free of charge.”

Another former student said, "I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another case that is related to him that somebody has been groomed by him."

The FBI said Bunag was a teacher, ran a photography business, and taught dance classes.

Criminal defense attorney Victor Bakke told Hawaii News Now, "Many people who are attracted to children or suffer from pedophilia, they do seek out job positions or employment where they’re around children. It is just a sign of the times when people with like interests can find each other and engage in this type of activity and discussion."
