Murder of judge gets more mysterious after reports of accused sheriff having lunch with judge just hours prior, sex scandal

Investigators are seeking motives for the shocking murder of a Kentucky judge. The suspect is a sheriff — who had been close friends with the judge. The pair even had lunch together just hours before the judge was fatally shot earlier this month, according to reports.

As Blaze News previously reported, Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines, 43, is accused of shooting 53-year-old Judge Kevin Mullins on Sept. 19.

'Nobody I know can understand what happened between lunchtime and the judge's death.'

Stines is accused of walking into the judge’s chambers at the Letcher County Circuit Court and shooting Mullins eight times. Mullins was pronounced dead at the crime scene.

The sheriff reportedly exited the courtroom with his hands up after the shooting and was taken into custody without incident.

Stines pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder charge.

Surveillance video from inside the chambers showed the pair exchanging cellphones and looking at something on them before the sheriff walked over and shot the judge dead, sources told the Mountain Eagle.

“Our investigators seized the two cell phones, and they’re being analyzed,” Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart said Sunday.

The shooting is especially curious since Stines and Mullins reportedly had been decades-long friends.

What's more, the Daily Mail reported that the pair went to lunch at the Streetside Grill & Bar on Main Street just hours before the shooting.

A restaurant employee told the outlet that Stines and Mullins ordered their usual lunch — both having chicken wings with salad.

"Everything seemed fine between them. There was no clue that anything was wrong at all," an employee said. "You wouldn't have guessed there was the slightest problem."

The employee added that "it's fair to say we had a lot of business from the judge and the sheriff. They'd been coming here together for lunch for years. Nobody I know can understand what happened between lunchtime and the judge's death."

Letcher Circuit Clerk Mike Watts told the Mountain Eagle, “I never knew of there being any kind of friction between them till it came to this. We all got along good, teased each other."

Until he became sheriff in 2018, Stines was the bailiff for Judge Mullins. Ben Fields succeeded Stines as Mullins' bailiff.

Fields, it turns out, coerced a female prisoner to have sex with him inside Judge Mullins' chambers. The woman alleged she was promised "favorable treatment for sexual favors."

Earlier this year, Fields pleaded guilty to raping a female prisoner while she was on home incarceration.

Fields was sentenced to six months in jail and then six and a half years of probation for rape, sodomy, perjury, and tampering with a prisoner monitoring device. Three charges related to a second woman were dismissed because she is now dead.

Stines fired Fields for "conduct unbecoming," the Courier Journal reported.

Days before the shooting, Stines was deposed in a lawsuit filed by two women, one of whom was Fields' victim. The civil lawsuit accuses Stines of “deliberate indifference in failing to adequately train and supervise” Fields, an ex-deputy.

When asked if a "sex scandal" was a possible motive in the fatal shooting of the judge, Trooper Gayheart confirmed: “Absolutely. We are not ruling out anything as a possible motive.”

Gayheart did not elaborate on the sex scandal in question.

The Mountain Eagle noted swirling gossip regarding the motives for the murder, "Rumors, apparently none true, have raced through the community, setting a torch to other relationships. The community is split between those bent on spreading salacious gossip and those determined to protect the families of two men they saw as pillars of the community."

Are Political Sex Scandals A Thing Of The Past?

After a major political reporter has been caught sexting a presidential candidate, does anyone believe there are still real consequences for such tawdry and unethical behavior?

Tennessee city pays $500,000 to ex-cop who had sexual trysts with 6 fellow officers, lawsuit says she was 'sexually groomed'

The former cop who was fired after being involved in an explosive sex scandal at a Tennessee police department has been awarded a $500,000 settlement from the city of La Vergne.

In January 2023, several officers at the La Vergne Police Department were suspended or fired over a sordid sex scandal. As Blaze News previously reported, there were allegations of unreported sexual relationships, having sex while on duty, and sexual harassment by sending pornographic photos and videos.

There were reported games of "strip Uno," a "Girls Gone Wild"-themed hot tub party, and foot fetish photos being shared.

The officers who were terminated are Patrol Officer Juan Lugo Perez, Sgt. Lewis Powell, Detective Seneca Shields, Sgt. Henry Ty McGowan, and Patrol Officer Maegan Hall. La Vergne Police Department Chief Burrel "Chip" Davis was also fired for allegedly receiving sexually explicit photos and videos of Hall.

Hall, 28, allegedly had sexual relations with six of her coworkers – which were not reported to the department.

In March 2023, Hall filed a federal civil lawsuit against the city of La Vergne. Hall claimed she was "sexually groomed" by her police colleagues.

Hall's attorney, Wesley Clark, previously said, "On several occasions, Hall tried to get out of this relationship, and she was not allowed to."

"Maegan wasn't looked at as a rookie cop to be trained and promoted," Clark claimed. "She was looked at like a piece of meat to be sexualized and exploited."

Hall said in an interview last year, "My supervisors worked together to take advantage of my vulnerabilities and mental health, and they used it for their gain and their sexual pleasure."

She said, "Who do you turn to when the chief of police is sexually harassing you? How can I get justice when the entire system, including the chief, not only condoned such behavior but participated in it? I was lost, and I felt alone. I had no one to turn to and nowhere to go."

On Wednesday, the La Vergne board voted 3-1 at a special meeting to settle the lawsuit.

Hall will receive $500,000 from the settlement.

The city denied "any admission of liability" and noted that no taxpayer funds were spent to settle the lawsuit, according to WTVF.

La Vergne Alderman Dennis Waldron was the lone dissenting vote.

Waldron said of the board's approval of the half-million-dollar settlement: "What message does that send to all the other employees?"

"It's sending a message out to everybody in the world [that says] come to La Vergne, sue La Vergne because they’re going to settle," Waldron stated.

Clark expressed that he is "absolutely" satisfied with the $500,000 settlement.

The attorney told WTVF, "This was her decision. She wanted to put this in the past and move forward with her life."

Clark remarked about Waldron's comment, "Well, I've got great advice for him. Stop breaking the law and you won't get sued."

Florida juvenile detention sergeant busted for allegedly writing letters 'fantasizing' about sex with underage inmate

A Florida juvenile detention center sergeant has been arrested after accusations surfaced of her writing letters to an underage inmate discussing how she sexually "fantasized" about being with the victim.

Katelyn Gomez, 27, worked as a sergeant at the Pinellas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Clearwater, Florida. However, Gomez was fired after allegations of a sex scandal involving her and a 16-year-old inmate surfaced.

Gomez was arrested by detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit on Wednesday and charged with solicitation of a child to engage in an act that constitutes sexual battery by a person in familial or custodial authority.

Authorities were tipped off to the alleged inappropriate relationship when 10 sexually explicit letters penned by Gomez were reportedly discovered in the cell of a 16-year-old inmate at the detention center.

In the letters hidden under the inmate's bed, Gomez allegedly "fantasized" about having a sexual relationship with the minor.

"Tease me and don't play fair with me," she allegedly wrote, according to Law & Crime.

"The letters explicitly described what would take place during their first sexual encounter and described an ongoing relationship which had developed while the victim was incarcerated," according to a news statement released by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

When interviewed by deputies, Gomez reportedly admitted to writing the letters to the boy.

She also said that she planned to build a life with the victim once he was released from the detention center, according to officials. She even talked about getting married and having children with the boy, according to the arrest affidavit.

Gomez allegedly developed a relationship with the minor when they met at the detention facility several weeks ago.

Gomez, who was hired as a sergeant in January, was assigned to the boy's pod three weeks ago.

She was allegedly instructed not to be alone with any of the juvenile inmates. However, Gomez was spotted spending time "one-on-one with the victim several times," according to other staff members at the juvenile detention center.

Investigators also said they discovered a photo of Gomez in the inmate's cell.

Police said the investigation into the alleged child sex crime is ongoing.
