4 sleeping passengers fatally shot on train, mayor of Chicago suburb says; suspect arrested; gun recovered

Four sleeping passengers aboard a Chicago Transit Authority train were fatally shot Monday morning, according to the mayor of Forest Park, a Chicago suburb.

CTA workers discovered the shooting victims around 5:30 a.m., WLS-TV reported, adding that Forest Park police said they received a 911 call about the shooting. Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth died at Loyola University Medical Center, the station said.

'It's a Monday morning on a holiday. Everyone is supposed to enjoying their time off, time with their families; it's Labor Day. ...'

Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins told WLS the victims, all adults, were sleeping at the time they were shot.

"These victims likely never saw it coming," Hoskins added to the station. "They were executed on Labor Day. In our community, people go to the pool. They go to the park. You know, they barbecue. But today a lot of people were calling the mayor's office, expressing concern and asking if they were safe."

Police told WLS the shooter fled the scene, but officers took a suspect into custody within 90 minutes and recovered the gun allegedly used in the shooting.

"We believe he got off at the Forest Park stop, and he was apprehended at a Pink Line station in Chicago somewhere, so he may have gotten on a train going the opposite direction," Hoskins added to the station.

Police told WLS the shooting occurred on two train cars.

"I mean, it's a horrible situation," Forest Park Police Deputy Chief Christopher Chin added to the station. "It is definitely something you don't want to wake up to. It's a Monday morning on a holiday. Everyone is supposed to enjoying their time off, time with their families; it's Labor Day."

Forest Park police and the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the shooting, WLS said, adding that police said it appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Neither the shooting suspect nor the shooting victims have been identified, the station said.

Bullet reportedly pierces wall of Oakland home, hits father of 2 in head while he's asleep, exits through his eye

A bullet reportedly pierced the wall of an Oakland home last week, hit a father of two young daughters in the head while he was asleep, and exited through his eye.

Citing a GoFundMe page from the family of victim Run Hua Kuang, KTVU-TV reported that he was taking a nap Thursday afternoon after finishing his shift as a delivery truck driver when a bullet penetrated a headboard, went through his head, and came out his left eye.

'This shocking incident has left the entire family traumatized and in deep distress.'

Kuang was on life support in an intensive care united after a seven-hour surgery, the station said.

KTVU said the 33-year-old victim and his family live in a housing project, and he was the sole breadwinner for his wife of seven years and his two young daughters, ages 7 and just 3 months.

The East Bay Times said Oakland Housing Authority police are investigating what prompted the shooting in the 2200 block of East 19th Street, and no arrests were announced, and no suspect information has been released.

"This shocking incident has left the entire family traumatized and in deep distress. This tragedy has created a severe financial burden for our family," the fundraiser read, the station said.

Kuang's sister put together the GoFundMe page and said he's also the person in his household who speaks English, and he takes care of family responsibilities and communications.

The fundraiser says he immigrated to the U.S. from Taishan, China, in 2005 "searching for the American Dream for his family."

The campaign has raised nearly $111,000 of a $200,000 goal as of Monday afternoon.

Those with information about the shooting can call OHA police at 510-535-3100 or its tip line at 510-535-3155, the Times said, adding that an OHA communications representative said the agency has been in contact with the family and “is providing support and services.”

Aircraft veers 28 minutes off course after both pilots fall asleep in the cockpit

A sleep-deprived pilot and copilot have been accused of allowing the plane they were flying to veer off course after they both dozed off in the cockpit. The flight was carrying 159 people on board, according to a report about the incident.

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee discovered that Batik Air flight BTK6723 veered off course on January 25 when both pilots fell asleep in the cockpit for about 28 minutes. Neither pilot was named in the document.

The plane was traveling from South East Sulawesi to Jakarta, which was expected to take two hours and 35 minutes. After the plane reached cruising altitude, the 32-year-old pilot asked his 28-year-old copilot if he had permission to sleep for a little while.

When the pilot got confirmation, he reportedly fell asleep for an hour. He woke up briefly to ask his copilot if he wanted to switch places, according to the New York Post.

The 28-year-old declined the offer, and the captain soon fell back asleep. However, when the captain awoke again later on, he found that his copilot had fallen asleep, and the aircraft "was not on the correct flight path," according to the report.

The pilots eventually got the flight back on course and safely landed in Jakarta. No one was injured during the flight, and the plane did not suffer any damage, according to NBC News. The report from the safety committee did not mention if the pilots would face any disciplinary action.

Both pilots were given the green light to fly before the January 25 flight after their blood pressure and heart rate exams came back normal and alcohol tests came back negative.

However, the copilot was said to have had a busy few days leading up to the flight. Not only this, but he was a father to one-month-old twins, and he had recently moved into a new home.

The copilot reportedly admitted to investigators that "his sleep quality had degraded by the several wakes up" from his children on the night before the flight.

The Post reported that according to a survey in July 2023 from the European Cockpit Association, 75% of those questioned admitted that they had fallen asleep at least once while flying a plane. The total number of pilots questioned in the survey was 6,893.
