Dozens injured after porch roof collapses near Ohio State University

Dozens of people were injured Saturday when a porch roof of a home near The Ohio State University in Columbus collapsed, WBNS and other outlets reported.

"It appears that the roof was overloaded with students. We've heard numbers between 15 and 45 students on a rooftop that was not designed to have anybody on it, and it gave way" Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin told reporters.

Nearly three dozen people were injured in the collapse at East 113th Avenue around 7:40 p.m., local NBC affiliate WCMH reported.

People were partying at the home just a few blocks from campus when the collapse occurred, according to the New York Post.

"We sent a large number of fire companies to the scene. When we got here, what we found was the front porch roof had collapsed," Chief Martin said.

"The few people that were trapped, I believe were probably unpinned," Chief Martin also said, explaining that students were helping peers by lifting and moving debris off their bodies to free them.

Chief Martin said they initially estimated ten people had been injured, but that number of confirmed injured quickly grew.

Emergency workers transported 14 people with "various stages of injuries" to local hospitals, including OSU Wexner Medical Center, Grant Medical Center and OSU East Hospital. All were stable, according to Chief Martin. No injuries were considered "serious" or "critical."

"We saw the aftermath. The roof was totally collapsed. I would say there were several hundred people outside. I saw a lot of panic happening. I saw people covered in black soot almost. They looked like they were heavily impacted by the accident" an unnamed OSU student told reporters on the scene.

WSYX reporter Myles Harris shared photos of the home Sunday morning. The photos show the roof completely collapsed, part of it pancaked onto the ground. Police tape and what appears to be a plastic swimming pool is seen in the grass. A wheelchair is shown leaned up against the roof debris, partially obscuring what appears to be a vinyl banner or sign.

"We are monitoring this serious situation closely and assisting first responders in any way possible. Our thoughts are with those present and their friends and family," The Ohio State University told the New York Post in a statement.

Actress Fran Drescher wants to leverage movie productions to force 'diversity, inclusion,' calls her green initiative biggest effort since WWII

Actress Fran Drescher wants to leverage the influence and monetary investment of movie productions to encourage states to push toward "diversity" and "inclusion," as well push green energy initiatives.

As reported by NewsBusters' Stephanie Hamill, while speaking at the The 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, Drescher took significant time on stage to talk about how movie studios can use financial influence on state legislators during an awards ceremony that was almost entirely void of political activism.

While most viewers were enjoying the sight of actress Jessica Chastain almost falling on stage or the exuberance of actor Brendan Fraser, Drescher spoke about activism from Hollywood's unions and the NFL.

"SAG-AFTRA and the NFLPA together forged Actors & Athletes for Democracy. We are the greatest influencers on the planet and must promote freedom for all," Drescher began.

"Our industry brings billions of production dollars to states across the nation, but if they want our business, let’s wield our financial influence to make governors act in the best interest of freedom, diversity, inclusion, and democracy. As my character Bobbi Flekman said in 'This Is Spinal Tap,' 'Money talks & bulls**t walks!'"

Drescher is the president of the the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists union, named in early 2022. The labor union represents approximately 160,000 professionals.

Drescher took more time to promote her Green Council initiative, which Deadline referred to as "an initiative she has been leading to encourage more environmentally-friendly practices in the industry," in 2022.

The actress pointed towards a single-use plastic initiative, remarking on the use of glass bottles at the ceremony, likening her efforts to World War II.

"I’m very proud to say SAG-AFTRA and MPA has forged Green Council, the biggest joint effort of Stars and Studios to save the planet since World War II," she said.

"Mission number one, an honor system to eliminate single use plastic on camera, behind the scenes and leverage star power to challenge audiences around the world to do the same. You may notice this year on your tables are glass bottles," she added.

3 California gang members arrested for freeway shooting death of toddler sleeping in car seat

Police announced on Thursday that three gang members were arrested in connection with the tragic shooting death of a toddler sleeping in his car seat inside a vehicle on a freeway in Oakland, California.

On Nov. 6, 2021, two rival gang members engaged in a gun battle on Interstate Highway 880 in the middle of the day, according to Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley.

Trevor Green and Ivory Bivins – members of the Chopper City street gang based in San Francisco – were driving in an Infiniti G35. The gangbangers were shooting at a Nissan Altima with Johnny Jackson and Keison Lee – members of the Eddy Rock criminal street gang out of San Francisco, O'Malley said.

Lee – who was driving the Altima – was hit by gunfire.

"Lee went to the hospital that afternoon in San Francisco and through the great work of the California Highway Patrol, they recovered the Altima with bullet holes near the hospital," O'Malley stated. "That car was riddled with bullet holes including an exit hole and a spent .45 caliber carriage casing. While being treated in San Francisco, Lee's hands were tested for gunpowder residue which turned out to be positive. He was interviewed and admitted to being shot on the freeway."

Lee was not charged in the shooting because he was killed in an unrelated gang shooting last month.

During the gang shootout, 23-month-old Jasper Wu was hit by a stray bullet intended for the targeted Altima. The toddler was reportedly sleeping in a car seat while his mother drove a Lexus sedan on the other side of I-880. There were three other children in the vehicle when the bullet hit the toddler.

Jasper was shot in the head and rushed to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wu's grandmother told KPIX-TV last year, "He's such a sunny and open and active boy."

On Thursday, Green, 22, of Richmond; Bivins, 24, of Vallejo; and Jackson, 28, of Richmond, were each charged with murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Bivins and Green were also charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and criminal street gang conspiracy.

In March, Green and Bivins were arrested on warrants for another alleged crime in Contra Costa County. The suspects will be transferred to Alameda County to face their charges, according to authorities.

During Thursday's press conference, Carl Chan – president of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce – spoke for the grieving family.

“It was for them mixed feelings," Chan said, according to KNTV. "First thing is first, they were very happy and excited to see this press conference of this case, but at the same time they feel like this is bringing back the memory of day one of what happened."

O'Malley said, "This is the worst nightmare and outcome of gun violence and especially gang gun violence. Innocent people are quite literally caught in the crossfire. The horrific nightmare for the Wu family and their baby being killed in such a senseless and violent manner can never be reconciled."

Crazed bystander physically attacks Dave Chappelle during Hollywood Bowl comedy set

A crazed bystander physically attacked comedian Dave Chappelle during a Tuesday night performance at the Hollywood Bowl.

What are the details?

Chappelle was delivering a comedy set on Tuesday night when a man ran onto the stage and hurled himself at the actor and comedian, reportedly knocking him to the ground.

Quick as a a flash, Chappelle's security team — and friend and actor Jamie Foxx, who was backstage at the time — rushed the stage, intervened in the attack, and dragged the assailant off of the stage.

According to reports, Chappelle's security team pummeled the attacker to subdue him.

The Daily Mail reported that Chappelle continued the show and after the curtain call said, "Shout-out to Jamie Foxx, by the way. Whenever you're in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff's hat."

Foxx replied, "I thought that was part of the show, I didn't know what the f***. ... Listen, I just want to say, this man is an absolute genius. We've got to make sure we protect him at all times. ... For every comedian who comes out here, this means everything. You're a genius. You're a legend, I enjoyed myself thoroughly, and we're not going to let nothing happen to you."

ABC News reporter Stephanie Wash tweeted that a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that a man who was armed with both a gun and knife was taken into custody following the incident.

She tweeted, "Dave Chappelle was rushed & attacked on stage by a man at the Hollywood Bowl. Chappelle tussled w/ the man, who ran behind the screen on stage & was surrounded by security. Chris Rock, who performed earlier, came on stage w/ him & joked: 'Was that Will Smith?'"

"LAPD confirm to KABC they responded to an incident at the Hollywood Bowl around 10:45 p.m., and a man who was reportedly armed with a gun and a knife was taken into custody," Wash added.

What else is there to know about this?

Reporter Brianna Sacks tweeted about the incident early Wednesday morning, writing, "Security et al rushed and started punching and kicking the s*** out of Chappelle's attacker. He was just about to bring on Talib Kweli and Mos Def for the encode [sic] and we in the crowd were like what the f*** is going on. Chappelle kept on while the guy was getting beat in the back."

"Sheer chaos," Sacks added. "Then Jamie Fox [sic] comes out in a cowboy hat, looking absolutely shocked, and Chapelle [sic] makes a joke about stomping the guy, who is still getting beat up. kweli and Mos Def do their set while LAPD cruisers start arriving behind the stage. F***ing wild[.]"

Sacks added that when the set concluded, she went outside to find LAPD cordoning off the area.

"When we got out of the Bowl and got our phones out, LAPD and medics were cordoning off the area and then loaded Chapelle’s [sic] attacker, who looked to be strapped in a jacket in a chair, into an ambulance," she wrote. "Members of the crowd cussed him out[.]"

She added, "What is really surreal about this is that Chapelle [sic] talked about Chris Rock and the slap/new reality facing comedians/having more security with him and his wife being worried about him now. He did a whole bit about a crazy man coming to his house and chasing him down in his car[.]"

DC mayor on carjacker who stole car from doctor, then killed him by running him over: 'probably didn't mean to kill anybody'

Democrat Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington, D.C., appeared to minimize a shocking carjacking in her city that, once again, ended with the victim losing his life.

Police say 33-year-old Rakesh Patel, a D.C. area MedStar physician, was pronounced dead after at least one carjacker allegedly stole his vehicle and then killed him with it.

According to WTTG-TV, Patel stopped at his girlfriend’s house Tuesday night to drop off an item. As the couple hugged goodbye, Patel noticed his Mercedes sedan beginning to move. Police say Patel then pursued his stolen car.

At some point, the carjacker(s) struck Patel and continued driving. Patel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The next day, police located Patel's abandoned Mercedes E350 near the Maryland state-line, the Washington Post reported. The Washington Police Department also released a video of two persons of interest they believe are connected to the fatal hit-and-run, but have not yet made any arrests.

How did Bowser respond?

Bowser issued an incredibly tone-deaf response as captured by WTTG reporter Stephanie Ramirez.

On one hand, Bowser claimed "there is no more important issue for us right now than dealing with people who are committing crimes in our city." On the other hand, Bowser seemed to minimize the seriousness of Patel's apparent homicide.

“We saw one person, who probably didn’t intend to kill anybody, but did, and devastated a family,” Bowser said.

Carjackings have plagued the nation's capital in recent years.

"Carjackings in the District spiked 200 percent from 2019 to 2021, and continue to rise this year. Auto thefts are up 9 percent in 2022. D.C. police and other jurisdictions have formed a carjacking task force with the FBI to confront the problem," the Washington Post reported.

The most notorious incident happened last March when two teenage girls carjacked Mohammad Anwar, a Pakistani immigrant who moved to the United States to make a better life for his family. During the course of the carjacking, Anwar remained connected to the car as the girls sped away. Just seconds later, the car crashed, flipped on its side, and flung Anwar's body into a building; he later died from his injuries.

Both teenage girls received plea bargains in which they pleaded guilty to felony murder. They were both sentenced to remain in care of D.C. juvenile officials until they reach the age of 21.

White House chief of staff's tweet cited by Supreme Court ruling to slap down Biden's vaccine mandate

A retweet from the White House chief of staff was cited in the Supreme Court ruling on Thursday against President Joe Biden's vaccine mandate.

Many on the left were angry and critical of the 6-3 ruling from the Supreme Court against the COVID-19 vaccine mandate on businesses ordered by Biden in September. The order would have been implemented by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and would have affected more than 80 million Americans.

“OSHA has never before imposed such a mandate. Nor has Congress. Indeed, although Congress has enacted significant legislation addressing the COVID–19 pandemic, it has declined to enact any measure similar to what OSHA has promulgated here,” read the majority ruling.

Buried in the ruling was a citation of a retweet from the official account of Ron Klain, the White House chief of staff. Klain had retweeted a missive from MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle that described the mandate as a "workaround" for a federal mandate.

"OSHA doing this vaxx mandate as an emergency workplace safety rule is the ultimate work-around for the Federal govt to require vaccinations," tweeted Ruhle in September.

— Stephanie Ruhle (@Stephanie Ruhle) 1631219159

In a concurrence written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, he notes that Congress has not given OSHA the power to issue a vaccine mandate, and he goes on to cite the "work-around" comment.

"It seems, too, that the agency pursued its regulatory initiative only as a legislative 'work-around,'" he opined.

Some on the right took to social media to mock Klain and the retweet that ended up helping doom Biden's mandate.

This was not the first time that Klain was ridiculed for his untimely tweets. In December he was mocked for tweeting that President Joe Biden would use federal power to defeat the pandemic. Months later, Biden conceded that the answer would have to come from the states and local governments.

He also tried to absolve Biden of responsibility for supply chain problems stifling the economy by calling them "high class problems" in October.

The mandate was struck down only three days after the emergency ruling was implemented by OSHA.
