'Right wing opinions are fine, left wing opinions are not': Taylor Lorenz raises eyebrows with claim about the NYT

Washington Post columnist Taylor Lorenz has suggested that there is a right-wing bias at the New York Times, claiming that journalists who work at the outlet can express right-wing political views but not left-wing views.

Lorenz previously worked at the Times as a technology reporter.

"Anyone who's worked as a journalist at the NYT knows that journalists there are absolutely allowed to loudly espouse political opinions, you just have to espouse the *right* political opinions. Right wing opinions are fine, left wing opinions are not," Lorenz wrote in a post on Threads.

Over on X, Elon Musk responded to a Not the Bee post about Lorenz's comments, tweeting laughing emojis and saying, "The parody writes itself."

"Lol," Kurt Schlichter wrote when reacting to a screenshot of Lorenz's comments.

"This person lives in an alternate reality," Adam Rubenstein tweeted regarding Lorenz's post.

Someone else wrote that "Taylor Lorenz out-Taylor Lorenzed herself."

In another post on Threads, Lorenz wrote that "at the NYT I wasn't allowed to express the 'opinion' that online harassment was a bad thing, in the midst of having my entire family harassed and doxxed. I also once had to delete a tweet where I said I don't like living in America lol. But saying 'wokes' are taking over campus is totally fine in their book."

FACT CHECK: It’s ‘Always Great To Hang Out’ With ‘Brilliant and Talented’ Taylor Lorenz

The Washington Post's executive fact-checker on Monday made a number of bold assertions involving a fellow journalist. "Always great to hang out with the brilliant and talented @TaylorLorenz," Glenn Kessler wrote on Twitter, the social networking platform, "a terrific addition to the @washingtonpost staff." The tweet included a photo of the two journalists posing in pandemic-era face masks and casual business attire.

Taylor Lorenz rebukes Matthew Yglesias for joking about COVID-19: 'Hope you can have a little more empathy'

Washington Post columnist Taylor Lorenz chided writer Matthew Yglesias for joking about COVID-19.

"Some personal news: I have contracted the novel coronavirus," Yglesias tweeted on Sunday. "Frankly, I think the virus should respect Father’s Day more than this," he added in another post. "FYI, all future typos are due to long Covid," he wrote.

But Lorenz took issue with Yglesias joking about the illness, and indicated that he should be more empathetic.

"I'm glad it’s a joke for u Matt and that you’re lucky enough to get access to great care, but for those who have had their lives destroyed by the virus and who have had loved ones die from or suffer w/ LC it's not funny. Hope you can have a little more empathy, especially today," Lorenz tweeted.

"Hi Taylor, can I joke about it?" someone else wrote in response to Lorenz. "This is me, the first time I sat up after the coma they had to put me in due to covid. It nearly killed me 4 times in the 41 days I was in the coma. You have a choice, crack jokes, or let it destroy your mind so I say start joking and keep it up."

"There’s a big difference btw joking abt ur own condition at ur own expense, & joking at the expense of others, especially those who are suffering. Continually minimizing an illness that is still devastating so many is harmful. I encourage you to learn about lateral ableism," Lorenz replied.

"Dear G-d I am a half crippled, fat, balding, internet s[***]poster, and still more likeable then you," the individual declared in response to Lorenz.

Washington Post wellness editor Tara-Parker Pope agreed with Lorenz on the issue.

"I wish you a speedy recovery and no lingering symptoms @mattyglesias Millions have not been as fortunate. I know of what I speak. Covid killed my stepmom and my dad developed long Covid. So no, Covid is not funny. Long covid is not a joke. @TaylorLorenz is right about this," Parker-Pope tweeted.

Mehdi Hasan also contended that Yglesias should not make jokes about the topic: "I hope you get better soon and I also hope you don't get Long Covid. If you do, you'll see it's not something to joke about or mock," Hasan tweeted.

Taylor Lorenz said during an interview earlier this year that she has faced online harassment and threats against her family members, and has even considered suicide.

"I post a Twitter reply or like someone's comment & the right wing media generates a massive cable news and online media cycle amplifying it to millions, driving thousands of hatful messages and threats against me/my loved ones, I think it's clear which side is 'freaking out,'" Lorenz tweeted on Monday.

Lorenz posted the comment in response to someone who had tweeted that Lorenz "could just try not freaking out online everyday."

Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon says he has 'personally' made a deal with the woman behind Libs of Tik Tok 'that will turn her heroic, high-risk work into a career'

Seth Dillon, CEO of the popular satire website the Babylon Bee, declared that he has a reached a deal with the woman behind the popular Libs of Tik Tok Twitter account "that will turn her heroic, high-risk work into a career."

He noted that the deal is not with the Babylon Bee, but that he "personally" made the deal with her.

Libs of Tik Tok shares videos of leftists openly exposing their radical attitudes and beliefs.

Dillon's declaration comes after Libs of Tik Tok has recently faced Twitter suspensions, and a Washington Post columnist Taylor Lorenz faces criticism for a piece that names and discusses a woman said to be behind the account.

.@LibsofTikTok has become a powerful cross-platform social media influencer, spreading anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and fueling the right wing media's outrage machine. \n\nI wrote abt the account, the woman behind it, and why it matters https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/04/19/libs-of-tiktok-right-wing-media/\u00a0\u2026

Libs of Tik Tok tweeted on Tuesday, "Hi @TaylorLorenz! Which of my relatives did you enjoy harassing the most at their homes yesterday?"

Dillon declared on Twitter, "The exposure of @libsoftiktok isn't journalism; it's pure intimidation. They're threatened by her effectiveness, so they hope to silence her by making her too afraid to continue. They want to raise the cost of doing her work so high that she has no choice but to quit."

"I want them to know that she won't be canceled from her job because this *is* her job now. I've worked out a deal with her that will turn her heroic, high-risk work into a career," he wrote. "They may have exposed her, but they'll never stop her. Long live @libsoftiktok."

On the heels of Dillon's tweet, Lorenz remarked, "I had heard that Babylon Bee had recently provided financial backing for @libsoftiktok but didn’t have enough confirmation on the details to nail it down for my story. Seth Dillon, CEO of the Babylon Bee has now confirmed it."

But Dillon fired back, noting that the Babylon Bee did not make the deal, but rather that he had made the deal with the woman himself.

"The Babylon Bee didn't do a deal with her. The Bee is a satire publication. You know, like the Washington Post. I did a deal with her personally. Also, I want to thank you for amplifying the voices you try to suppress. Your promotion of @libsoftiktok today has been priceless," Dillon tweeted.

Washington Post reporter taken to the woodshed for doxxing anonymous Libs of TikTok creator, prompting outlet to stealth-edit the report

Social media came for Washington Post technology reporter Taylor Lorenz in full force after she was accused of doxxing the anonymous creator of the popular Twitter account Libs of TikTok.

The outlet then appears to have stealth-edited the report to remove the woman's personal information.

Lorenz made headlines earlier in April after bursting into tears during an MSNBC hit recounting online harassment to which she said she was subjected, which reportedly prompted her to contemplate suicide.

What are the details?

According to reports, Lorenz sparked fury after she doxxed the anonymous woman in a Tuesday report for the Post, sharing a link to the woman's real estate license, which showed her address.

A portion of the report accused the social media user of nefariously trying to shape right-wing media and thus public policy.

"Libs of TikTok reposts a steady stream of TikTok videos and social media posts, primarily from LGBTQ+ people, often including incendiary framing designed to generate outrage," the report said. "Videos shared from the account quickly find their way to the most influential names in right-wing media. The account has emerged as a powerful force on the Internet, shaping right-wing media, impacting anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and influencing millions by posting viral videos aimed at inciting outrage among the right."

"The anonymous account’s impact is deep and far-reaching," Lorenz warned. "Its content is amplified by high-profile media figures, politicians and right-wing influencers. Its tweets reach millions, with influence spreading far beyond its more than 648,000 Twitter followers. Libs of TikTok has become an agenda-setter in right-wing online discourse, and the content it surfaces shows a direct correlation with the recent push in legislation and rhetoric directly targeting the LGBTQ+ community."

On Monday, the Libs of TikTok account shared an image of Lorenz outside of a family's home. She captioned the photo, "Which of my relatives did you enjoy harassing the most at their homes yesterday?"

At the time of this reporting, the tweet has received more than 65,000 likes and has generated a firestorm of comments accusing Lorenz of hypocrisy.

What else is there to know about this?

Lorenz tweeted in her defense, writing, "Reporters make phone calls, send messages, show up places, and knock on doors when reporting out a story."

She aded, "I reported this story out extensively, using every tool I had, to ensure I had the correct woman."

— Taylor Lorenz (@Taylor Lorenz) 1650374814

She also insisted that the woman's identity should not necessarily remain private, because she "isn't just some average woman with a social media account" and is, instead, a "powerful influencer operating a massively impactful right wing media shaping discourse around LGBTQ+ rights."

The backlash

Thousands of comments castigating Lorenz for what they said was a hit piece on the Twitter user began flooding the site beginning Tuesday morning.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald hit out at Lorenz after the Libs of TikTok photo went viral and tweeted, "The same people who — just 2 weeks ago — were insisting that criticizing Taylor Lorenz is wrong because it generates ‘harassment’ toward her are now cheering as she shows up at the homes of the relatives of Twitter users to dox them.”

Matt Walsh, author and Daily Wire contributor, added, "Libs of TikTok reposts content from TikTok. This is important work because that's the site millions of kids use. The Left is mad at her because they don't want us to know what our kids are being exposed to. We're not supposed to see that stuff. Only our kids are."

Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance wrote, "Bezos's mouthpiece (the Washington Post) doxxing Libs of Tik Tok is further evidence that the purpose of the corporate media is industrial scale harassment. Time for defamation reform for the media, and to break up their Big Tech enablers."
