Portland to vote on banning travel, trade with Texas to protest abortion law; Texas lt. gov. fires back: 'Portland is a dumpster fire'

The Portland City Council plans to vote on prohibiting business transactions with the state of Texas over its new law that bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected.

The Portland City Council is set to hold a vote on Wednesday on whether to ban trading goods and services with Texas and to bar city employee business travel to the Lone Star State.

Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) said on Friday that the city council would vote on the emergency resolution that will determine whether or not Portland bans the "future procurement of goods and services from, and City employee business travel to, the state of Texas."

"The Portland City Council stands unified in its belief that all people should have the right to choose if and when they carry a pregnancy and that the decisions they make are complex, difficult, and unique to their circumstances," Wheeler said in a statement. "The ban will be in effect until the state of Texas withdraws its unconstitutional ban on abortion or until it is overturned in court. City legal counsel is currently evaluating the legal aspects of this proposed resolution."

"This law does not demonstrate concern for the health, safety, and well-being of those who may become pregnant," Wheeler added. "This law rewards private individuals for exercising surveillance and control over others' bodies. It violates the separation of church and state. And, it will force people to carry pregnancies against their will."

Wheeler claimed the new law "allows Texas to outlaw an estimated 85% of all abortion procedures in the state."

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) fired back at the potential boycott by calling Portland a "dumpster fire."

"Portland boycotting Texas is a complete joke," Patrick wrote on Twitter. "A city led by depraved officials allows lawlessness, putting their citizens in grave danger. A boycott will hurt them, not us. Texas' economy is stronger than ever. We value babies and police, they don't."

"It's comical that Portland mayor @tedwheeler is worried about Texas when his city defunded the police and he had to ask citizens to 'take back the city.' Texas is solidly #prolife and Texans support law enforcement. Meanwhile, Portland is a dumpster fire and Texas is thriving," Patrick boasted.

Senate Bill 8, known as the Texas Heartbeat Act, bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually about six weeks into a pregnancy. In the legislation, which was signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), physicians are banned from "knowingly perform[ing] or induce[ing] an abortion on a pregnant woman if the physician detected a fetal heartbeat for the unborn child ... or failed to perform a test to detect a fetal heartbeat."

The law allows citizens to sue medical providers who perform an abortion after a fetal heartbeat has been detected, as well as people who "knowingly" assist a prohibited abortion. Those who aid or abet an illegal abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected can be sued for statutory damages for at least $10,000.

The U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 to not block S.B. 8 last week.

The Texas Heartbeat Act went into effect on Wednesday. There was reportedly a mad dash by women to get abortions in Texas before the new abortion law went into effect.

The Texas Tribune noted, "Most abortions in Texas were prohibited after about 20 weeks. Pill-induced abortions were barred at 10 weeks."

'Antifa' issues veiled death threat against Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler in alarming video

A person purporting to represent Antifa has reportedly targeted Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) after he issued a plea for the community to assist in "unmasking" rioters and members of Antifa.

Just last week, Wheeler asked the public to identify any violent or destructive demonstrators as riots have continued to erupt across the city for more than a year.

What are the details?

According to a Thursday report from PJ Media, a person purporting to represent Antifa threatened Wheeler in a video shared Wednesday night.

In the video, a masked person threatens the Democratic mayor and even goes as far as to publish Wheeler's home address.

The person concluded, "Ted, we are asking for the last time that you resign. If you ignore this message outright, the destruction to your precious way of life is going to escalate. Blood is already on your hands, Ted. The next time, it may just be your own."

What else?

On Thursday afternoon, The Oregonian reported that police are investigating the video.

Jim Middaugh, a spokesman for the mayor, said that he and his office learned of the video Wednesday evening.

Middaugh added that the city's police bureau also notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Middaugh said the mayor's office has seen a dramatic uptick in messages following the press conference, most of them critical of Wheeler and the remarks he made," the outlet reported. "Some claimed the mayor's comments would encourage right-wing vigilantism while others said hardline approach was too-little, too-late."

Wheeler's remarks also rankled some civil rights groups.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon condemned Wheeler's request in a statement.

“His comments are inappropriate, irresponsible, and dangerous," a spokesperson for the group said. “After more than four years as police commissioner, Ted Wheeler must finally recognize the role that unchecked police violence has in escalating tension in Portland."

Left-wing thugs punch, scream at left-wing Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler during restaurant dinner

It should come as no surprise to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to the daily nightmare that is Portland, Oregon, that its left-wing Mayor Ted Wheeler isn't left-wing enough for violent leftists who roam the streets looking for their pound of flesh.

What's the background?

You may recall that Wheeler tried chatting with leftist rioters back in July after they'd been burning down his city night after night — and they proceeded to shred him to bits. As Wheeler walked into the crowds for what he deemed a "listening session," some threw objects toward him while others called for his resignation, chanting, "Tear Gas Teddy," the New York Times said.

He was booed, he was cursed out, he was shouted down, he was harassed. "F*** Ted Wheeler!" one leftist shouted out before adding that the mayor is a "f***ing fascist!"

Now what?

Fast-forward to what apparently had been a peaceful dinner for Wheeler and a companion Wednesday night at Cafe Nell's outdoor dining area.

Well, as the mainstream media enjoys saying, it was mostly peaceful.

See, some folks started yelling obscenities at Wheeler from outside the tent, mayoral spokesman Jim Middaugh told the Oregonian in a statement. And soon the thugs eventually "pushed their way past restaurant employees" and confronted the mayor, Middaugh told the paper.

But after Wheeler asked the group to leave, "one member of the group started swatting at the mayor and made physical contact with him," Middaugh added to the Oregonian.

More from the paper:

The reported contact was not captured on video footage posted to Twitter, though Wheeler can be heard claiming someone assaulted him. He wasn't hurt.

At one point in a different video clip, Wheeler repeatedly asks a person behind the camera how old they are — and tells them to grow up.

"You are going to be made to feel like the scum you are," the person later yelled at Wheeler.

Restaurant staff eventually persuaded the group to leave, Middaugh said.

Eater noted that "Tevis" is Wheeler's middle name.

Police told the Oregonian that no one has been arrested and authorities are investigating the incident.

"Given the tenor of political discourse nationally and locally, it's not unusual for people to confront the mayor and other elected officials in public. It's part of the job," Middaugh added to the outlet. "The mayor will continue to support local restaurants and businesses as often as he can. He urges others to do the same."

Portland protester catches on fire after rioters throw Molotov cocktails and launch fireworks at police

Saturday marked the 100th consecutive day of protests in Portland, but things escalated into violence, and police declared a riot after agitators threw Molotov cocktails and launched fireworks at law enforcement officers.

Hundreds of people gathered at Ventura Park in southeast Portland on around 7 p.m. on Saturday, including many dressed in all black clothing. Some of them donned helmets, gas masks, body armor, and a few were equipped with large shields.

Around 9 p.m., the crowd marched towards the east precinct, but Portland police stopped the procession. Police said the rioters then engaged in "tumultuous and violent conduct."

At about 9:15 p.m., rioters began throwing fire bombs, shooting illegal fireworks, mortars, and hurling rocks at police officers. One rioter had a "wrist-rocket" type of slingshot. A Portland police sergeant was "struck by a commercial grade firework, which burned through his glove and injured his hand," according to the Portland Police Bureau. Portland police responded with crowd control munitions, including tear gas and impact weapons.

One of the Molotov cocktails landed in front of the officers and ignited a large fire. A protester caught on fire from the inferno and frantically attempted to put out the flame by running around the street. Police say the Portland fire and rescue medics offered treatment to the man who caught on fire. "The injured person was later taken to a hospital by private vehicle," authorities said.

Oregon state police troopers were also patrolling Portland on Saturday night. Last week, Oregon state police troopers were deputized by U.S. Marshals. The deputization lasts a year.

The state troopers will work alongside Portland police as well as "protect and defend federal government buildings and personnel during a civil disturbance" when necessary, Kevin Sonoff, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said.

That means that an Oregon state police trooper can arrest someone for a federal crime and then turn the case over to a federal prosecutor instead of a state prosecutor.

This is a significant development since Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Shmidt announced last month that his office would not prosecute certain crimes during the ongoing protests. Included in those crimes that his office refused to prosecute is interfering with a peace officer or parole and probation officer, disorderly conduct in the second degree, criminal trespass in the first and second degree, escape in the third degree, harassment, and riot (unless accompanied by a charge outside of this list).

Saturday's riot came a day after the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office unsealed court documents that give new insights into last weekend's lethal shooting in Portland. The unsealed documents show that self-described Antifa member, Michael Forest Reinoehl, targeted Patriot Prayer members Aaron "Jay" Danielson and Chandler Pappas. Danielson was shot dead on Aug. 29.

A crowd of about 200 held a vigil for Danielson on Saturday near Portland, where Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson called for members not to seek revenge for Danielson's death.

"I know that Jay would not want that," Gibson said. "Jay wants us to stand up for what we believe in, and he does not want any more violence, guys. He does not want any more violence."

Gibson also called for Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) to apologize to Danielson's family. Gibson said Wheeler enabled "a culture of lawlessness" that he claimed resulted in the death of Danielson.

Portland cop chases Antifa rioter and tackles him to street. But when leftist pulls off cop's helmet, all bets are off.

Antifa rioted in Portland yet again Monday night.

Rioters set a fire on the ground floor of the high-rise condominium where far-left Mayor Ted Wheeler lives, the Oregonian said, and — given it was the mayor's birthday — wore party hats and sang "happy tear gas to you" before the festivities began.

Here's a peek at how they helped him celebrate:

But on this 96th consecutive night of mayhem in the city, police weren't playing.

After a riot was declared, officers got to work:

Journalist Sergio Olmos noted that police soon enacted a second bull rush on rioters. And in the sequence Olmos caught on video below, one officer runs ahead of the pack, grabs an Antifa militant, and tackles him to the street.

But the black-clad leftist — flat on his back while the cop is on top of him — apparently still has a little bit of resistance in him and pulls the officer's helmet from his head.

The officer proceeds to repeatedly punch the militant:

All in all, the Oregonian said police arrested 19 people in connection with Monday night's rioting.

Eight arrestees were charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with a peace officer, the paper said, adding that two were accused of carrying concealed weapons — with one of them also accused of attempted assault on a public safety officer. It isn't clear what charges, if any, the Antifa rioter who pulled off the officer's helmet faces.

More from the Oregonian:

Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt has said his office won't pursue demonstrators accused of interfering with police and disorderly conduct, among other charges, if the allegations don't involve "deliberate'' property damage, theft or force against another person, or threats of force.

The office also won't prosecute people on a riot accusation alone. Prosecutors will proceed with a riot case only if it includes an accompanying allegation of specific property damage or use of force, Schmidt said last month.

How did folks react to the cop's punches?

Journalist Andy Ngo posted Olmos' clip of the officer punching the Antifa rioter on his Twitter page, and reactions were mixed. In fact, it appeared that most commenters weren't happy that a police officer used such force — but still a number of others said it's been a long time coming based on three months of lawlessness and violence against police:

  • "This is my favorite clip of the night," one commenter wrote.
  • "I think the cop should receive the same punishment as most of these rioters: release without bail and no follow-up on the charges," another commenter quipped.
  • "The feel good image of the summer," another commenter said.
  • "Dude knocked the cops helmet off trying to resist, got his melon knocked a few times," another user noted. "These people have been assaulting cops for more than 3 months. DA Mike Schmidt is responsible for this. Stop the catch and release, hold these people accountable."
  • "Next we will see footage of this clown calling them pussies and doing something...up to the point of slammed...then he cries 'ugh I'm not fighting you' LOL...funny how the 'bold' become the spineless..." another commenter said.

Mayor Ted Wheeler and Joe Biden shift blame to President Trump for violence leading to deadly Portland shooting

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) blamed President Donald Trump for violence that led up to Saturday's fatal shooting of a seemingly conservative-leaning man in the city that Wheeler governs.

"Do you seriously wonder, Mr. President, why this is the first time in decades that America has seen this level of violence? It's you who have created the hate and the division," Wheeler said on Sunday during a press conference regarding the deadly Portland shooting.

"Yesterday's events began with hundreds of cars filled with supporters of the president rallying in Clackamas County and then driving through downtown Portland," Wheeler said. "They were supported and energized by the president himself."

"President Trump, for four years, we've had to live with you and your racist attacks on black people, we learned early about your sexist attitudes towards women," Wheeler said of the president. "We've had to endure clips of you mocking a disabled man. We've had to listen to your anti-democratic attacks on journalists. We've read your tweets slamming private citizens to the point of receiving death threats. And we've listened to your attacks on immigrants."

"We've listened to you label Mexicans — rapists," Wheeler continued. "We've heard you say that John McCain wasn't a hero because he was a prisoner of war. And now you're attacking Democratic mayors and the very institutions of democracy that have served this nation well since its founding."

"Do you seriously wonder, Mr. President, why this is the first time in decades that America has seen this level of violence? It's you who have created the hate and the division," the Portland mayor stated.

"President Trump, you bring no peace. You bring no respect to our democracy," he added. "You, Mr. President, need to do your job as the leader of this nation. I, Mr. President, will do my job as the mayor of this city. We will both be held accountable as we should. I'm calling out every other elected official in Oregon to join me. Not only in defeating racism but helping me to stop the violence as we are and will continue to be held accountable by all of our residents."

Trump retaliated to Wheeler's accusation in a series of tweets, including calling him a "weak and pathetic mayor."

"Ted Wheeler, the wacky Radical Left Do Nothing Democrat Mayor of Portland, who has watched great death and destruction of his City during his tenure, thinks this lawless situation should go on forever. Wrong! Portland will never recover with a fool for a Mayor," Trump wrote.

"He tried mixing with the Agitators and Anarchists and they mocked him," the president continued. "He would like to blame me and the Federal Government for going in, but he hasn't seen anything yet We have only been there with a small group to defend our U.S. Courthouse, because he couldn't do it."

"The people of Portland, like all other cities & parts of our great Country, want Law & Order," Trump stressed.

Trump then called out Joe Biden, "The Radical Left Democrat Mayors, like the dummy running Portland, or the guy right now in his basement unwilling to lead or even speak out against crime, will never be able to do it!"

Biden joined Wheeler in saying that Trump was to blame for the violence in Democratic-controlled cities across the nation.

"The deadly violence we saw overnight in Portland is unacceptable," Biden said on Sunday. "Shooting in the streets of a great American city is unacceptable. I condemn this violence unequivocally. I condemn violence of every kind by anyone, whether on the left or the right. And I challenge Donald Trump to do the same."

"We must not become a country at war with ourselves. A country that accepts the killing of fellow Americans who do not agree with you," the Democratic presidential nominee said. "A country that vows vengeance toward one another. But that is the America that President Trump wants us to be, the America he believes we are."

"What does President Trump think will happen when he continues to insist on fanning the flames of hate and division in our society and using the politics of fear to whip up his supporters? He is recklessly encouraging violence," Biden stated.

"He may believe tweeting about law and order makes him strong - but his failure to call on his supporters to stop seeking conflict shows just how weak he is," Biden added. "He may think that war in our streets is good for his reelection chances, but that is not presidential leadership - or even basic human compassion."

"Donald Trump has been president for almost four years," the former vice president said. "The temperature in the country is higher, tensions run stronger, divisions run deeper. And all of us are less safe because Donald Trump can't do the job of the American president."

Portland has experienced 93-straight days of protests, many of which have escalated into riots. Black Lives Matter protesters chained themselves inside the lobby of Wheeler's condo on Friday.

Earlier this month, Wheeler warned rioters in Portland that they are helping Trump get reelected. "You are creating the B-roll film that will be used in ads nationally to help Donald Trump during this campaign," Wheeler said.

Trump has offered to send in federal officers to quell the riots in Portland numerous times, and as recently as two days before the fatal shooting.

On Friday, Wheeler rebuffed the president's offer by writing a letter. "Yet again, you said you offered to aid Portland by sending in federal law enforcement to our city," Wheeler wrote. "On behalf of the City of Portland: No thanks." Adding, "Stay away please."

Despite not having federal agents in Portland, the Department of Justice announced last week that 74 people are facing federal charges for crimes committed during violent riots in Oregon's largest city.

Also on Sunday, Trump tweeted out condolences to the man who was shot dead in Portland. The victim is identified as Jay Bishop.

74 rioters facing federal charges for crimes committed during Portland riots

The Department of Justice announced on Thursday that 74 people are facing federal charges for crimes committed during violent riots in Portland that have been happening since late May.

"For more than 90 consecutive nights, Portland has been home to large demonstrations and protests against police use of force and anti-Black racism," the Department of Justice statement reads. "On many nights, after peaceful demonstrations end, various public and private buildings have been the target of vandalism and destruction. Local, state, and federal law enforcement working to protect these buildings and ensure the safety of peaceful demonstrators have been subjected to threats and assaults from violent agitators while performing their duties."

"Violent agitators have hijacked any semblance of First Amendment protected activity, engaging in violent criminal acts and destruction of public safety," U.S. Attorney Willias said. "The U.S. Attorney's Office and our federal law enforcement partners are expeditiously working with local and state law enforcement to identify, arrest, and prosecute these individuals that are disrupting the rule of law in our communities and physically attacking our law enforcement officers and destroying property. Violent agitators not only delay real reform, but make our community less safe by keeping law enforcement from responding to other critical calls for service."

Charges include arson, destruction of federal property, assaulting a federal officer, unlawful use of a drone, and failing to obey lawful orders. You can find a list of the defendants and charges below.

The federal charges come at a time when President Donald Trump and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) are quarreling over the use of federal law enforcement in Oregon's largest city that has been rocked by civil unrest.

On Aug. 25, Trump urged Wheeler and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) to accept federal law enforcement.

"We again request Kate Brown (@OregonGovBrown), the Governor of Oregon, and Mayor @TedWheeler of Portland, to call up the National Guard like should have been done 3 months ago," Trump tweeted. "They must stop calling these anarchists and agitators 'peaceful protestors'. Come back into the real world! The Federal Government is ready to end this problem immediately upon your request."

As of Aug. 27, Portland Police have made 217 arrests at protests in the month of August, nearly three times the 77 arrests they made in all of July, according to the Portland Police Bureau. "About half of those occurred in the last week, when police declared riots five out of seven nights," The Oregonian reported on Thursday.

Friday marked the 93rd straight day of protests in Portland. A riot was declared by Portland Police after vandals set fire to the police union building.

Also on Friday night, Black Lives Matter protesters chained themselves together as a demonstration in Wheeler's apartment building lobby.

Black Lives Matter protesters chain themselves together in lobby of Mayor Ted Wheeler's condo, riots erupt in Portland

A group of Black Lives Matter protesters chained themselves together inside the lobby of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler's condo on Friday night. The sit-in was part of a larger demonstration outside of Wheeler's apartment, where approximately 150 people gathered to protest police brutality and racial inequality.

At around 7 p.m., approximately one dozen BLM protesters assembled inside the lobby of progressive mayor's apartment complex in the Pearl District. The group vowed to stay locked inside the lobby until Wheeler heard their demands. The group left three hours later.

The group demanded that Wheeler reduce the Portland Police Bureau budget, commit to never voting for police budget increases again, abolish the police bureau, and for the Democratic mayor to resign.

"Specifically, we demand that you and your fellow city leaders immediately develop a task force to plan for a 50% reduction of the Portland Police Bureau budget by 2021, and a complete abolition of the Portland Police Bureau by 2022, with no private or technological replacement," the Portland group demanded. "This timeline gives existing police officers ample time to find and train for alternative, meaningful work that benefits the community."

"Furthermore, we demand that the resources saved from the abolition of the Portland Police Bureau be re-invested into Black, Indigenous, and Brown communities, community-centered health and safety, and city services and programs that address the root causes of violence, crime, and inequality," the group added. "We also demand that you - with your extreme wealth, nepotistic career history, and family legacy that highlight you as a true embodiment of white supremacy - resign from your position as the Police Commisioner and Mayor of Portland."

One resident of the apartment building tried to broker a meeting between Wheeler and the protesters. David Kahn, former president of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves, stopped to speak to the demonstrators inside the lobby.

Kahn, who said he is a friend of the mayor, told The Oregonian he offered to set up a meeting on Monday with Wheeler, but the group declined.

"I'm certain that if he was here tonight we probably could have arranged for something, but he's not," Kahn said. "But I know for a fact that is a standing policy for him."

Tim Becker, a spokesperson for Wheeler, did not confirm whether the mayor was at his home or not.

Protesters painted bloody red handprints on the windows of the lobby and put up signs that read: "Send Teddy to the Hague."

Agitators shined lights into the windows of the apartment building, and a metal band played live music outside the condos in an effort to not allow Wheeler to get sleep. The security at the condo reportedly called police, but authorities did not respond.

A resident of the condo building allegedly threw objects at the protesters from their window or balcony.

Protesters also gathered outside of Wheeler's apartment in June. The protest was declared an unlawful assembly.

Wheeler was outside cleaning up trash in his neighborhood the next day. "I live here, and these are my neighbors," Wheeler said in June. "And I'm sure they're not very happy this morning. They're probably not very excited to be my neighbors at the moment."

Wheeler attempted to pander to far-left protesters in July, but that ended with miserably for the Democratic mayor. Agitators threw objects at him, cursed at him, called him a "f***ing fascist," and chanted: "Tear Gas Teddy!" The protest turned violent and tear gas was deployed towards the crowd, including Wheeler.

For the 93rd straight night, there were protests in Portland. On Friday night, shots were allegedly fired into the air, and nobody was hurt.

The Portland Police union building was set on fire.

"Individuals wheeled multiple dumpsters into the road and lit at least one on fire. The fire was in the road and not threatening any structures. In the interest of deescalating the situation, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers remained out of sight," the Portland Police Bureau said. "However, arsonists put some debris, including a large mattress, against the front door of the building, appeared to spray accelerant on it, and lit it on fire. The flames appeared to engulf the front door area of the building and nearly reach the roofline."

"Due to the extreme life safety concerns, the Incident Commander declared the incident a riot," they added.
