Announcer accuses Tiger Woods of being on 'a lot of painkillers' during tournament: 'Look at the eyes'

A broadcaster accused golf legend Tiger Woods of being on "a lot" of painkillers at a recent tournament, sparking controversy and backlash from fans.

It was the first round of the Open Championship in Scotland at the Royal Troon Golf Club when a Sky Sports broadcaster made some accusatory comments about the golfer.

During the broadcast, Mark Roe said that something looked off about Woods, a three-time tournament champion:

"You look at the eyes ... you gotta think there's a lot of painkillers being taken to cope with the pain, you know?" Roe asked.

'There are just things that need not be said.'

As Men's Journal reported, Woods indeed has a history with painkillers since undergoing multiple back and knee surgeries. The outlet noted Woods' 2017 arrest for a DUI, during which he was found to have painkillers hydrocodone and hydromorphone in his system. He later went to rehab for addiction to prescription painkillers.

After the insensitive commentary by the U.K. announcer, fans quickly posted video from the broadcast calling the remarks unnecessary.

"A little bit odd for Mark Roe to just come out and say that. Not all the silences have to be filled," said one golf account who posted the footage.

"An absolute crazy thing to say on air," another page, focusing on golf stats, said.

"I'm not a big fan of Tiger, but even if it's true, there are just things that need not be said," another fan chimed in.

Roe is a former professional golfer, now broadcaster for Sky Sports. He appeared in the very same tournament 12 times beginning in the 1980s, according to Sporting News. He is most known for a scorecard issue at the Open Championship in 2003 when he and his playing partner forgot to exchange scorecards and therefore both signed the wrong card.

The pair were disqualified from the tournament for their error despite Roe being just two strokes behind the leader.

As for Woods, his previous arrest stemmed from what was called an "unexpected reaction" to prescription medications, and he admitted that he should have consulted with his medical team before taking them.

His DUI charge was later dropped, and Woods pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge from the same incident.

Making Tiger Woods Apologize For Teasing Justin Thomas Is Ridiculous

The media narrative is that Tiger Woods insulted women everywhere by handing Justin Thomas a tampon, implying that Thomas ‘hit like a girl.’

Tiger Woods slammed by women's group, Olympian Michael Johnson for tampon prank as Paige Spiranac defends pro golfer from cancel culture

Legendary golfer Tiger Woods is being raked over the coals for pulling off a tampon prank on a fellow golfer. A women's group and Olympian Michael Johnson slammed Woods for the friendly prank, but golfer Paige Spiranac defended the 15-time major champion against cancel culture.

During the first round of the Genesis Invitational on Thursday, Woods handed fellow golfer Justin Thomas a tampon. After Woods gave Thomas the tampon, they embraced and laughed about the joke as they walked off the tee.

Woods apologized for the prank after it went viral online.

"It was supposed to be all fun and games and obviously it hasn’t turned out that way," Woods told reporters on Friday.

"If I offended anybody, it was not the case, it was just friends having fun," Woods said. "As I said, if I offended anybody in any way, shape or form, I'm sorry. It was not intended to be that way. It was just we play pranks on one another all the time, and virally, I think this did not come across that way, but between us, it was – it’s different."

Despite the apology, Woods was lambasted by some for the prank between friends.

Kara Sugar, the CEO of the Women's Global Empowerment Fund, told TMZ that the prank was misogynistic, tone-deaf, and disrespectful to women and girls all over the world.

Sugar asked Woods if he believed that "periods are embarrassing or shameful or a sign of weakness?"

Olympian Michael Johnson bashed Woods for his apology.

"Apology starting with 'If I offended anyone' is no apology. But this is Tiger. Never been a leader and he's Teflon," Johnson wrote on Twitter. "Still heralded after all the mistakes so he's learned nothing. Media focus always on miraculous recovery. Never why the need for recovery."

Golfer Paige Spiranac came to the defense of Tiger.

"If anyone tries to cancel Tiger over this we riot. It's funny," Spiranac tweeted.

"Instead of women being outraged by Tiger and the tampon, I would love for them to actually provide ideas to help," she added. "For example I would have Tampex team up with the PGA tour to run a campaign where they provide free feminine products at golf courses. Most don’t actually have them and during long rounds it can be a problem for us."

Spiranac added, "It's interesting to see women outraged by Tiger slipping JT a tampon after out driving him but those same women will quickly tear me down for how I've decided to build my business. You can't pick and choose when to be a feminist."

Tiger Woods turned down offer of $700-$800 million to join controversial LIV Golf

LIV Golf, the professional golf tour that has stirred controversy due to its ties with the Saudi Arabian government and efforts to lure talent away from the PGA Tour, lost out on the biggest fish in the sport.

In an appearance on "Tucker Carlson Tonight," LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman confirmed that 46-year-old Tiger Woods, a 15-time major champion, turned down an offer between $700 million and $800 million to join the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

"Look, Tiger is a needle mover, right? So, of course you're got to look at the best of the best,” Norman told Tucker Carlson. When Carlson asked Norman about the $700-$800 million figure that had been rumored, Norman responded, “They had originally approached Tiger before I became CEO. That number is somewhere in that neighborhood."

Norman called the PGA Tour a "monopoly" during his interview with Carlson and said the PGA created obstacles that caused LIV Golf to alter its plans for its launch.

Norman also said it "blows my mind" that corporate sponsors have dropped golfers for joining LIV because of its Saudi ties, despite having business ties themselves with Saudi Arabia. "The PGA Tour, I think, has about 27 sponsors who do 40-plus billion dollars’ worth of annual business on an annual basis in Saudi Arabia," he claimed.

LIV has been handing out enormous sums of money to attract top PGA stars to its events. According to the Associated Press, various reports have said Phil Mickelson received a $200 million signing bonus, while Dustin Johnson received $150 million.

As LIV’s rivalry with the PGA Tour rages on, Woods has remained an outspoken supporter of the latter. "I’ve been playing out here for a couple of decades, and I think there’s a legacy to it. I still think the PGA Tour has so much to offer, so much opportunity,” Woods said in May. He also stated that players who took money from LIV Golf had “turned their back” on the PGA Tour that made them famous.

Woods should be able to survive without the LIV deal. Forbes estimates that he has earned $1.7 billion on and off the course in his illustrious career.

LA Sheriff Won’t Reveal Cause Of Tiger Woods Crash, Cites ‘Privacy Issues’

The LA County Sheriff told TMZ investigators have determined the cause of the Tiger Woods car crash but aren't releasing details to the public at this time.

Tiger Woods says he didn't even remember driving before horrific car accident: report

Golf legend Tiger Woods reportedly told Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies that he could not remember driving before the near-fatal accident and wasn't even sure how the crash happened.

What are the details?

According to a Wednesday report from USA Today, which cited a police affidavit, Woods was unconscious when they discovered him trapped inside an SUV during the late February accident.

The affidavit, according to the outlet, was in a search warrant used to obtain the "black box'' of the vehicle.

A portion of the affidavit stated, "The deputies asked [Woods] how the collision occurred. Driver said he did not know and did not even remember driving. ... Driver was treated for his injuries at the hospital and was asked there again how the collision occurred. He repeated that he did not know and did not remember driving."

USA Today reported that "[d]ata from the car Woods was driving 'constitutes evidence that tends to show the commission of a felony or misdemeanor offense' according to the form filled out to obtain the search warrant."

According to a Thursday report from TMZ Sports, the Los Angeles County sheriff got a search warrant to seize the vehicle's black box because a judge reportedly believed there was probable cause to believe a crime could have been committed.

"[L]aw enforcement sources say the possible offense is misdemeanor reckless driving," the outlet reported.

"Multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... the search warrant prepared by the Sheriff's Dept. outlined details of the crash that left Tiger badly injured. Some of the items go to the heart of the warrant — establishing probable cause — the fact that there were no skid marks, the objects struck by the SUV before it came to rest, the fact that it was a single-vehicle crash, Tiger's horrendous injuries, as well as damage to the vehicle and apparent excessive speed."

No specific crime is listed

TMZ reports that the words "reckless driving" are not mentioned in the warrant, and sources report that no specific crime is listed in the warrant.

"Nevertheless, a judge is prohibited from signing a search warrant unless there's probable cause of a crime," the outlet notes.

Woods remains in Cedars-Sinai Hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said, "The investigators in the incident, or in the collision, they did a search warrant to seize in essence the black box of the vehicle. And that's all it is. And they're going to go through it and see if they can find out what was the performance of the vehicle, what was happening at the time of impact. And with that, they'll have more information they can attribute the cause of the accident. And that's all it is, and we'll leave it at that, OK?"

Tiger Woods recovering from surgery after serious injuries. Authorities say car flipped multiple times.

Tiger Woods is recovering from surgery after suffering "significant orthopedic injuries to his lower right extremity," which were sustained in a Tuesday wreck.

Woods, 45, was in Los Angeles on Tuesday when he was involved in a single-car crash.

Following the lengthy Tuesday surgery, Woods was "awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room."

What are the details?

Dr. Anish Mahajan of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center issued a statement on Woods' condition, noting that Woods suffered multiple "open fractures" to his right leg.

"Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia," Mahajan said in part of the statement.

He also revealed that screws and pins were inserted in both Woods' foot and ankle during the surgery.

"Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins," the surgeon added. "Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

The statement was published on Woods' Twitter page along with a message from Woods' team.

"We thank everyone for the overwhelming support and messages during this tough time," a portion of the statement added.

"[Woods] is currently awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room," the statement continued. "Thank you to the wonderful doctors and hospital staff at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and the Fire Department. Your support and assistance has been outstanding."

"There are no further updates at this time, and we continue to thank you for your well-wishes and privacy for him and his family," the statement concluded.

What else?

During the horrific accident, Woods was said to be awake and lucid.

ESPN reports, "The two-lane road on which the rollover occurred curves through upscale suburbs, and the northbound side that Woods was driving on descends steeply enough that signs warn trucks to use lower gears. The speed limit is 45 mph."

Sheriff Alex Villanueva of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said that Woods' vehicle "appeared to first make contact with [a] median, then went across the two southbound lanes."

"It hit a curb, hit trees, and rolled over several times, with the vehicle ultimately settling several hundred feet from the road," ESPN reported. "There were no skid marks and no evidence of braking, and weather was not a factor."

Authorities did not divulge the specific speed at which they believed Woods was traveling but pointed out that Woods was driving at a "relatively greater speed than normal" when he first struck the median.

The airbags, Villanueva said, "gave him a cushion to survive the crash."

Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, who arrived first on the scene of Tuesday's crash, said that it's "very fortunate" that Woods "was able to come out of this alive."
