John Cleese refuses to remove 'Life of Brian' joke about a man becoming a woman and having a baby that critics call 'transphobic'
John Cleese refused to bend the knee to the outrage mob who called for a joke to be removed from an upcoming stage version of Monty Python’s "Life Of Brian." The controversial scene features a man claiming that he is a woman and he can have a baby.
Cleese is working on a stage production of Monty Python's "Life of Brian," a 1979 movie about a man who is mistaken for Jesus Christ. However, actors allegedly told Cleese that one scene would need to be cut out of the reproduction for it not to be offensive in today's social environment.
The scene in question features a character named "Stan" – who wants to become a woman and have babies.
"I want to be a woman," Stan declares. "From now on, I want you all to call me Loretta."
Cleese's character Reg bewilderedly asked, "What?"
Stan fires back, "It's my right as a man."
When asked why he wants to be a woman, Stan explains, "I want to have babies."
Reg quizzically replies, "You want to have babies?"
Stan shoots back, "It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them."
When Reg informs Stan that he "can't have babies," Stan plays the victim, "Don't you oppress me."
Cleese's character notes, "I’m not oppressing you, Stan, you haven’t got a womb. Where’s the fetus going to gestate? You gonna keep it in a box?"
Other characters agree that Stan can't have babies, but argue that he should have the "right to have babies."
Reg responds, "What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can't have babies?"
Another character says, "It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression."
Reg quips that Stan has a "struggle with reality" for thinking he can give birth to a baby.

Critics claim the scene in the movie from 44 years ago is "transphobic."
Despite the controversy, Cleese confirmed that he would not be removing the questionable scene from the upcoming stage show of "Life of Brian."
Cleese wrote on Twitter, "A few days ago I spoke to an audience outside London. I told them I was adapting the Life of Brian so that we could do it as a stage show ( NOT a musical ). I said that we'd had a table reading of the latest draft in NYC a year ago and that all the actors – several of them Tony winners – had advised me strongly to cut the Loretta scene. I have, of course, no intention of doing so."
Cleese slammed the media for "misreporting" him about cutting the Loretta scene from the new version, "Amazingly none of the British media called to check."
Cleese said of the actors in the upcoming production, "These were absolutely top-class Broadway performers and they were adamant that we would not get away with doing the scene in NYC! I asked them, 'Are Python fans not going to come because we're doing a scene they've been laughing at for 40 years.'"
The Monty Python comedian said, "Producers tend to be scaredy-cats, and they don't remember that the protests in NYC when 'Brian' was released meant we never needed to do publicity!"

Fans shred comedian John Mulaney for being a 'transphobe.' Why? Because Dave Chappelle opened for him.
Fans say that comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" writer John Mulaney is transphobic — all because comedian Dave Chappelle opened for him ahead of a recent set.
What are the details?
Mulaney is apparently being branded transphobic by association after Chappelle — who has been accused of transphobia for joking about the transgender community — opened for the comedian ahead of a Friday show in Columbus, Ohio.
Fans who attended the show took their grievances to social media, where they castigated Mulaney for allowing Chappelle to associate with the show.
One user, @boobeoisie, went viral for remarks about the show.
The user wrote, "Tell me why I just went to the John Mulaney show and Dave Chappelle was a surprise opener and made not only a transphobic joke but a homophobic one."
Another fan said that they felt "ambushed" by Chappelle's appearance.
"[M]y favorite part of tonight was when dave chappelle ambushed us at the john mulaney show, told a bunch of transphobic jokes, a massive stadium of people laughed, and then john mulaney hugged him at the end," the user wrote.
One user — who identified as transgender — added, "Pretty disappointed in John Mulaney, saw him tonight and yeah, he was funny, but he gave Dave Chapelle the platform to make some transphobic jokes. Also very disheartening to hear a crowd of 12,000 around you (a trans person) laughing at transphobic jokes. Thanks Columbus."
Another wrote, "John Mulaney is not only responsible for platforming DC, but for yet another wave of cis a**holes yelling at trans people that we're overreacting and we deserve this treatment and cruelty. F***in sucks!!
One offended attendee told BuzzFeed News that Chappelle's jokes were "low-hanging fruit" for a "red state like Ohio."
"[Chappelle] was punching down on an already marginalized and institutionally abused community,” the fan told the outlet. “It was embarrassing seeing a revered man in his craft become so tacky and boomer-esque.”
The fan added, “It, unfortunately, makes sense — it was a low-hanging fruit of a joke in a red state like Ohio. In the end, he told the upset audience members to relax. The obvious grasp at trying to receive backlash and act shocked that he did receive ... it was embarrassing.”
Progressives blast Bill Maher as 'transphobic' for saying it's 'trendy' to be LGBTQ, declaring children transitioning to transgender is not science-based
Bill Maher dared to discuss the sacred cow of transgenderism – which instantly caused progressives to attack the liberal talk show host.
During Friday night's episode of "Real Time with Bill Maher," the HBO host discussed a Gallup poll about the increase of Americans identifying as LGBT.
The survey found, "The percentage of U.S. adults who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual has increased to a new high of 7.1%, which is double the percentage from 2012, when Gallup first measured it."
The Gallup poll published in February said that each generation had increased by around double from the previous generation. There were 0.8% who identify as LGBT in the Silent Generation, 2.6% of Baby Boomers, 4.2% of Gen X, 10.5% of Millennials, and 20.8% of Generation Z.
Maher hypothesized that some of the massive increase in people identifying as LGBTQ could be because it is currently "trendy" to be considered as such.
“Yes, part of the rise in LGBT numbers is from people feeling free enough to tell it to a pollster and that’s all to the good, but some of it is — it’s trendy,” Maher said.
Maher said, "I'm just saying when things change this much, this fast, people are allowed to ask, 'What's up with that?' All the babies are in the wrong bodies?"
Maher questioned a recent statement by the American Civil Liberties Union that listed groups that would suffer "disproportionately harm" by abortion bans. The ACLU did not name women, but did mention "black, Indigenous, other people of color, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, young people, those working to make ends meet, and people with disabilities."
Maher asked, "Abortion rights affects gay and trans people more than you know – breeders?"
"I'm happy for LGBT folks that we now live in an age where they can live their authentic lives openly, and we should always be mindful of respecting and protecting," Maher stated. "But someone needs to say it. Not everything's about you."
Maher moved on to children transitioning – which he described as "literally experimenting on children."
He noted, "Maybe that's why Sweden and Finland have stopped giving puberty blockers to kids because we just don't know much about the long-term effects, although common sense should tell you that when you reverse the course of raging hormones, there's going to be problems."
Maher then listed the potential health risks of puberty blockers for children.
Maher then highlighted that no gay men were selected as a Grand Marshall for the upcoming New York City Pride Parade. "That’s where we are now – gay men are not hip enough for a Gay Pride Parade," he said.
Maher pointed out that the "prime directive" of teens is to do "anything to shock and challenge the squares who brought you up. It’s why nobody gets a nose ring at 56."
"If you attend a small dinner party of typically very liberal, upper-income Angelenos, it is not uncommon to hear parents who each have a trans kid having a conversation about that," Maher stated, then asked, "What are the odds of that happening in Youngstown, Ohio?"
Maher inquired, "If this spike in trans children is all-natural, why is it regional?"
"Either Ohio is shaming them or California is creating them," he continued. "If we can't admit that in certain enclaves, there was some level of trendiness to the idea of being anything other than straight, then this is not a serious, science-based discussion. It's a blow being struck in the culture wars using children as cannon fodder."
Maher cited Dr. Erica Anderson – a "prominent" transgender clinical physiologist – who believes some children are identifying as transgender due to the "influence of their peers and social media."
Maher explained that children are not just "gender-fluid," but "fluid about everything." He added, "If kids knew what they wanted to be at age 8 – the world would be filled with cowboys and princesses."
Maher joked, "If you are a man who wants to experience life without a pair of balls, you do not have to get surgery, you can get married."

According to multiple Twitter reactions, Maher's monologue about LGBTQ enraged progressives. They lashed out and labeled the liberal talk show host "transphobic" and a "transphobe."
A Twitter user accused Maher of spreading "Gay Replacement Theory."
One activist said Maher was "spewing dangerous and hateful rhetoric."
Some progressives demanded that HBO cancel "Real Time with Bill Maher."
There was at least one Twitter user insinuated that Maher be sentenced to death for the crime of being a transphobe.
