How would today’s youth react to Bobby Knight as a coach? Four NFL Hall of Famers weigh in

Legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight passed away last Wednesday at the age of 83. He will be remembered for his long list of accomplishments, including winning 902 NCAA basketball games, 11 Big Ten championships, three NCAA championships, and an Olympic gold medal. He will also go down in history as being one of the most decorated coaches of all time. Knight was named National Coach of the Year four times and Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times.

However, Knight will also be remembered for his, shall we say, unique coaching style that often resulted in bouts of volatility. Throwing a chair across the court during a game, getting into a physical scuffle with a police officer, and grabbing a player by the throat during practice are just a few examples of Knight’s infamous temper.

Although his approach to coaching clearly worked for players like Michael Jordan, the renowned “Coach K” or Mike Krzyzewski, and Isiah Thomas, how would Knight’s harsh methods fare with today’s youth players?

This was one subject of conversation that took place during Jason Whitlock’s Fearless Army Cookout, featuring NFL Hall of Famers Brett Favre, Warren Sapp, Marshall Faulk, and Brian Urlacher.

“I think we need more of that Bobby Knight today,” said Brett Favre, adding that tough coaching, in his experience, “[weeds] out the weak.”

“I played for many Bobby Knights,” Faulk said. “I’m the player I am because of that,” but “in today’s world, you get a trophy for participating.”

“Am I right in thinking this younger generation couldn’t handle a Bobby Knight?” Whitlock asked.

According to Sapp, it’s not just kids who can’t handle the intensity of a Bobby Knight but also adult professional athletes.

“I was talking to an NFL defensive coordinator the other day, and he said, ‘Man if you tell these kids the truth ... Dr. Reynolds is in your office asking you, what did you say to this man?’ They will go tell the psychiatrist on you now,” he told the group.

However, for Urlacher’s son, who’s currently a high school football player, that’s not the case.

“They get a lot of Bobby Knights,” he said, and “they’re a good football program because of it. ... He likes being coached hard.”

“The kids who can’t take it,” Faulk added, “their parents were the ones who didn’t make it in our era. ... Their kids are the ones that can’t deal with a Bobby Knight.”

“It’s a soft generation in general,” Favre chimed in, “and I think a lot of the blame should be on the parents. ... Bobby Knight would choke someone. I’m not saying that should be done, but there’s a level of discipline that’s missing” in today’s youth.

Footage shows a Las Vegas teen in a stolen car laughing manically while fatally running over a retired police chief. Prosecutors intend to try suspect as an adult.

A 64-year-old retired police chief was riding his bike near his northwest Las Vegas home when the driver of a stolen 2016 Hyundai Elantra targeted him and fatally ran him over. Footage taken by the perpetrators later revealed this bloody incident was no accident.

Two thugs inside the stolen car filmed the incident as well as a previous hit-and-run, documenting how they cackled manically and expressed their intention to "hit his a**" ahead of mowing down Andreas Probst, whose daughter suggested he had been everyone's dad, "like being next to a ray of sunshine."

Prosecutors do not appear keen on handling the alleged murderer with kid gloves. Instead, they have noted their intention to try him as an adult. Although there have been no executions in Nevada since 2006, it is nevertheless a death penalty state.

The Clark County District Attorney's Office stressed in a statement Monday that it is "taking this matter very seriously. ... The District Attorney's Office is seeking certification to adult status of the juvenile perpetrator."

The 17-year-old is facing an open murder charge, which the DAO indicated was filed in the juvenile system. More charges may be forthcoming.

If tried and convicted of first-degree murder as an adult, the teen could face 50 years in prison, life in Nevada State Prison, or the death penalty. If convicted of second-degree murder, the teen could face 25 years or life in prison.

"I am confident that justice will be served in this matter once the investigation is complete and the appropriate charges have been filed," said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department indicated Monday that police are still searching for the second person who was in the stolen car and who appears to have captured the slaying on video, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

TheBlaze previously reported that in the video captured by the second perpetrator, taken around 6 a.m. at North Tenaya Way near West Centennial Parkway, the teens can be seen purposely targeting a white sedan. The teen driver accelerates, pulls up next to the sedan, then abruptly maneuvers into it, sending it careening into the median.

One of the two perpetrators gleefully yells, "B**h a** n*****! Stop talking s**t, b***h!"

Just moments later, they spot Probst minding his own business and riding his bike in the designated bicycle lane.

"Ready?" says one of the teens.

The other enthusiastically replies, "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Hit his a**."

Laughing maniacally and honking the horn, the driver slams into Probst, sending him flying.

"Damn, that n**** got knocked out," says the passenger, filming the grisly aftermath behind them.

The New York Post indicated that after mowing down Probst, the perpetrators sped off on North Tenaya Way.

Probst was taken to University Medical Center after the hit-and-run, where he was pronounced dead.

Las Vegas-based criminologist Dr. Scott Bonn told the Review-Journal that the video reminded him of the so-called "knockout game," where punks viciously assault random strangers, sometimes with lethal consequences.

Bonn suggested that trying the 17-year-old driver as an adult "makes sense, absolutely, because this is a particularly heinous act."

Probst was the former police chief of Bell, California, and retired in 2009 after 35 years in law enforcement.

Taylor Probst, the victim's daughter, told the Review-Journal, "Being around him, it was like being next to a ray of sunshine. ... He was always laughing, always smiling, offering you support, life advice, career advice."

— (@)

Crystal Probst, the victim's widow, noted on LinkedIn, "Andy was a great father, loving husband and brother. He dedicated 35+ years to law enforcement and worked his a** off to improve his community."

Probst's widow told Fox News Digital that her husband's murder was further evidence of the anarchy that takes hold when criminals are not held to account and police are demonized.

"It's not just about one victim. We as a nation are victims. We are victims of senseless crimes," said the widow. "We all need to show up and show our outrage in the courtrooms."

All 9 juveniles who escaped from detention center after riot in Pennsylvania captured

Nine inmates escaped from a detention center in Pennsylvania following a riot Sunday, but all have since been apprehended. The brevity of the manhunt — which comes just weeks after a murderous illegal alien broke out of a Pennsylvania prison — was the result not only of a quick response on the part of law enforcement but also some of the escapees' apparent lack of fortitude.

"It probably was planned, but poorly planned," said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper David Beohm, reported the Associated Press.

The motley crew, ages ranging between 15 and 17, made their escape from Abraxas Academy, a youth detention center in Morgantown that deals with delinquents known for their "habitual offending behaviors or for a history of sexual offending behavior," according to its website.

A riot erupted at the facility Sunday, affording some inmates a distraction that they immediately seized upon.

The Caernarvon Township Police Department noted at 9:27 p.m. that state and local law enforcement had restored order at the academy; however, the facility was then short nine inmates.

Authorities indicated that the inmates had broken free after overtaking two female guards and stealing their keys, reported ABC News.

"They were able to get the keys and then they were able to get out the side door, or one of the doors," said Beohm.

The Robeson Township Police Department issued an alert Sunday evening, notifying anyone in the area of Interstate 176 and Route 10 to "be vigilant," adding that the escapees were all wearing white and grey shirts and shorts.

Boehm said that four rogues were taken into custody just before 6 a.m. on Monday after having "basically given up."

"They were done, they were tired, they were cold," said the trooper.

Unable to hack the cold and lack of sleep, the first group of escapees knocked on the door of a random home on Oak Grove Road in Morgantown and surrendered.

The remaining five who had not been so quickly defeated by the prospect of discomfort took off in a stolen truck.

Police indicated that at least two cars had been broken into.

Troopers chased the truck down and bagged four of the inmates. The fifth managed to flee into a nearby field on foot, but he too was hunted down and captured alive.

All nine were picked up within four miles of Abraxas Academy.

Beohm indicated that all nine, who came in "pretty weary looking and dirty," will be charged with escape. Additional charges may also be applied where applicable.

"We're going to interview all nine of them," said Beohm. "I know there's stuff in the works right now to decide where they are going to go after that takes place."

Abraxas Academy is no stranger to riots or the expressions of concern by locals.

A riot broke out at the facility involving 50 teenagers on July 4, reported CNN.

"We’re concerned. We’re concerned that this institution which houses our most serious juvenile offenders who’ve been accused of a crime or convicted of a crime – they have to be able to maintain control," said Berks County District Attorney John Adams.

Scandal-plagued Boy Scouts of America pitch a tent for LGBT activists at national jamboree

Working to salvage its reputation in the wake of a multibillion-dollar sex-abuse settlement and corresponding bankruptcy, the Boy Scouts of America has once again signaled whose esteem it values.

Mike De Socio penned a piece for the Washington Post Thursday wherein he lavished praise on the BSA for staging its first-ever "affinity space for LGBTQ youth" — a massive tent erected at the heart of the Scouts' National Jamboree in Glen Jean, West Virginia.

The tent, wrote De Socio, was "decorated with a canopy of LGBTQ Pride flags and a string of multicolored lights, its tables covered with bowls of rainbow bracelets, pronoun stickers and diversity patches."

The "LGBTQ+ and allied scouts" area was one among three featured "community spaces" inside the tent. There were also spaces for "scouts of color" and "women in scouting."

De Socio intimated that the popularity of these spaces late last month among members may signal a victor in the battle between "champions of diversity and inclusion against conservatives and the religious right," at least where the BSA is concerned.

Woke scouts

The BSA, founded in 1910, is one of the largest youth organizations in the U.S., with purportedly over 1 million youth members and 628,000 volunteers.

Its stated mission is to "prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling them the values of the Scout Oath and Law."

The Scout Oath binds scouts to do their best to do their duty "to God and [their] country and to ... help other people at all times; to keep [themselves] physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

In 2019, it changed its name to Scouts BSA to reflect its decision to allow girls to become scouts.

Years earlier, it ended both its prohibition on openly gay scouts as well as its ban on openly gay scout leaders and had even welcomed girls who claimed to be boys.

In recent months and years, the organization has embraced woke initiatives, evidenced by its:

  • appointment of "DEI leads for each of our 16 National Service Territories to partner with the leaders and troops with the leaders and troops within their territories to implement and advance our commitment to DEI";
  • introduction of "training that will empower participants to identify and recognize implicit bias" along with race, sexual preference, and gender-based resource groups; and
  • roll out of a "Citizenship in Society" merit badge, "encouraging Scouts to explore important topics around diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership and learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting."

During the BLM riots in 2020, the BSA announced it would require that Eagle Scouts earn a diversity and inclusion badge, force all BSA employees to undertake diversity and inclusion training, and altogether "ensure diversity and inclusion are engrained at every level for participants and volunteers."

Earlier this year, the BSA began surveying members over whether it was time to jettison century-long traditions and practices that may upset iconoclasts and activists worried about "cultural appropriation," reported NBC News.

It does not appear the BSA is done revolutionizing itself.

LGBT activists' latest forward operating base

The Washington Post reported that thousands of kids trafficked through the LGBT activist tent at this year's BSA National Jamboree where 18-year-old River Capell, a self-declared "pansexual" scout volunteer from Northern Virginia, joined other activists in peddling advice.

"There's been days where there's 2,000 kids in this tent alone. And that is just, like, absurd," said Capell. "I've had some scouts asking genuine questions, like 'What does it mean to be this? What does it mean to be that?' ... But it was all curiosity, and how do I help, rather than [hostility]. So it's all been incredibly welcoming and positive."

While the feeling was purportedly positive, the 10-day jamboree saw a significant drop in attendance in recent years.

The group of scouts former President Donald Trump addressed in 2017 — a speech the BSA later apologized for — comprised an estimated 40,000 souls, whereas De Socio observed a crowd no bigger than 15,000 scouts and volunteers this time around.

Dwayne Fontenette Jr., DEI lead at the Jamboree, told De Socio earlier this year that the plan with the tent was to enable scouts "to engage with the DEI programming throughout the day" and "share additional resources that leaders can take home, so that they can improve the culture within their local programs."

In some of the progressive "community spaces," De Socio indicated kids could find guidance on "how to be an ally" as well acquire agitprop.

Paige Morgan, a self-identified "bisexual" who spoke to De Socio, suggested that "the people that are coming through here, like trans, nonbinary youth, the queer youth, are having a great time seeing themselves represented in a space that they love so much."

The Post indicated that Christian tents appeared far less popular this year, although that may be a result of conservatives and Christians sending their kids elsewhere for strengthening and edification.

Some BSA alternatives

For instance, some might turn to Trail Life USA, an explicitly Christian BSA alternative that rose to prominence in 2013 following the Scouts' announcement it would begin admitting openly gay members.

The male-only organization's stated mission is "to guide generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure."

Unencumbered by a debilitating sex scandal or deference to corporate donors, Trail Life has partnered with over 1,000 churches in all 50 states and presently has north of 50,000 members.

The Columbian Squires, a youth fraternity run by the Knights of Columbus for Catholic boys ages 10 to 18, was formed nearly a century ago and presently boasts around 25,000 members.

The Squires is touted as a program "to develop young men as leaders who understand their Catholic religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of patterning their lives after the Youth Christ."

The North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists has the co-ed Adventurers, the Pathfinders, and Master Guides ministries on offer.

The Calvinist Cadet Corps, established in 1952, is another option with tens of thousands of members in the U.S., Canada, Kenya, and Uganda.
