News outlet claims buying an AR-15 is like 'ordering groceries.' The fact checks come swiftly.

A news outlet was promptly fact-checked on Friday after publishing a story that claimed purchasing an AR-15 rifle online is like "ordering groceries."

What was claimed?

Zach Seward, editor-in-chief of Quartz, tweeted on Thursday, "We bought a gun—the same Daniel Defense DDM4 V7 assault rifle used in Uvalde. It was like ordering groceries. Click, checkout, done."

In the story itself, Quartz claimed purchasing the firearm took only "five clicks." In fact, the story problematized the ability to purchase firearms online by repeatedly noting the website from where they purchased the firearm did not verify the purchaser's age or request a background check.

"Aside from that, it was a routine purchase, not unlike ordering a Lego set from Amazon or a pair of shoes from Zappos. Except, of course, for the lethality of the product," the story said.

Then, after outlining the legal requirements for purchasing a rifle, the story observed, "We didn’t get any notices or warnings about that during the checkout process."

"[T]he fact that shopping for a firearm does not feel noticeably different than ordering those everyday items is a telling commentary on the prevalence of guns in US culture," the story concluded.

What was the reaction?

The framing of the story drew widespread criticism because it obfuscates the process for purchasing firearms online.

It is true that you can purchase firearms online like any other regular item. But the difference — and it is a significant difference — is that firearms purchased online can only be delivered to federally licensed firearm dealers. The Quartz story relegates this critical difference to the last paragraph of its story.

Once there, the identification and legal eligibility of the purchaser is verified by the dealer, who also conducts a background check. The process also requires the purchaser to complete a government document, ATF Form 4473. State and local laws can further complicate and delay the process.

Here's what critics of the story said:

  • "'It’s like ordering groceries..' if Safeway had access to your criminal records and personal info to sell you a strawberry," communications strategist Matt Whitlock mocked.
  • "Except he had to go to a FFL, fill out a 4473, wait for NICS to come back clear before ever leaving with it. Funny, I’ve never had to do that for groceries — and in some states you wait a few days," Dana Loesch noted.
  • "Just like ordering groceries if ordering groceries meant going to a specially licensed dealer and passing an fbi background check. (Also it’s not an 'assault rifle')," conservative writer David Harsanyi said.
  • "These people are such liars. You will have to go to an FFL dealer to pick it up. Before you leave with it, you will be subjected to a background check. Only when you pass the background check will you have 'bought the gun,'" Jason Howerton said.
  • "'Buying a gun is just like buying groceries!' Because we all know you have to pass a federal background check when you go to pick up your curbside order at Wegman's. They're being deceptive about this on purpose," John Cooper of the Heritage Foundation mocked.
  • "Not a single person in this entire media organization thought this story felt incomplete before publishing it. That’s cultural illiteracy — and it’s just as bad as a news organization devoid of women, or one without the perspective of non-white employees," Steve Krakauer noted.
  • "Yes, ordering groceries, something that famously requires proof of a clean criminal record," journalist Drew Holden mocked.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer blasted for 'hypocrisy' amid reports she recently took personal trip to Florida

Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is facing accusations of hypocrisy amid reports that she recently traveled to Florida to visit her ailing father, despite blaming travel to the Sunshine State for her own state's raging COVID-19 outbreak.

What are the details?

Michigan Information & Research Service News first reported Monday that Whitmer traveled to Florida, noting that the governor's father owns a home in the state.

Several local outlets, including WWMT-TV, reported that Whitmer's office confirmed the news.

In a statement to WEYI-TV, Whitmer spokesperson Tiffany Brown was careful not to name where the governor went, but explained:

The governor did not go on spring break, and she has not left the state in over a month. In the past six months she has left the state three times, once for the inauguration, once to assist her elderly father who is battling a chronic illness, and once to visit with Michigan's National Guard troops. All trips were very brief, two full days or less, closely followed public health guidelines, and were made when Michigan's daily positivity rate was in the low single digits. Due to ongoing security concerns, we will not comment further on the governor's personal schedule. A little more context, her dad was fully vaccinated and the governor is tested regularly and has never tested positive for COVID. The trip was not paid for at taxpayers' expense.

Whitmer's office also initially confirmed the Florida trip to the Detroit Free Press, but then backtracked. Reporter Paul Egan tweeted after the initial report, "Correction: Gov's office, which sent the statement extensively quoted in this article after being specifically asked, in writing, about a trip by the Gov to Florida, now says it will not confirm that Florida is where she visited her father."

Whitmer has been under fire for her stringent coronavirus restrictions since the COVID-19 pandemic began last year, and took further heat earlier this month when it was revealed that one of her top aides traveled to Florida for spring break despite the governor's warnings against doing so.

The Detroit Free Press also noted that "Elizabeth Hertel, the director of the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency that issues Michigan's coronavirus restrictions, recently traveled with her family to the Gulf Coast of Alabama when her department was cautioning against such travel and while cases in Michigan were surging."

The Daily Wire pointed out that "on Sunday, Whitmer suggested that Florida was part of the reason that coronavirus cases have exploded in her state, saying, 'This is the time in the year that snowbirds come home from Florida, where people are going on spring break, and all of these things can contribute to spread.'"

In reaction to the news, Chris Gustafson of the Republican Governor's Association said in a statement that Whitmer's "hypocrisy knows no bounds," Patch reported.

"Gretchen Whitmer's hypocrisy flies in the face of every Michigander who has persevered through Whitmer's disgraceful response to COVID-19," Gustafson said. "While telling Michiganders not to travel, Whitmer flew down to Florida and proved once again that the rules to her or her family don't apply. It's time for Gretchen Whitmer to go."

Biden's live feed immediately cut off after he offers to take questions; president sets record for most days without solo press conference

There was an awkward end to the House Democrats 2021 Issues Conference on Wednesday. President Joe Biden attempted to take questions from Democratic lawmakers during the virtual event, but instead, the live feed was abruptly cut off without the president signing off.

During the livestream, Biden said, "I'm happy to take questions, if that's what I'm supposed to do, Nance," referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He then looked for guidance from Pelosi: "Whatever you want me to do."

The feed unexpectedly ended without Pelosi saying anything or Biden answering any questions.

As of Thursday morning, the video clip of the curious conclusion to the conference went viral, with more than 1.4 million views.

The sudden wind-up of the White House feed when Biden was ready to take questions reignited concerns about the president's lack of press conferences.

Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany pointed out that Biden has yet to hold a solo press conference, despite former Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama having press conferences by mid-February during their tenures.

"Where's Joe? It's been 41 days, at this point President Trump had had multiple press appearances, press conferences. President Barack Obama had as well," McEnany told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday. "Joe Biden needs to step up, we need to hear from him. He needs to engage in the transparency that he promised us; he hasn't thus far."

Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump "had held them 20 days and 27 days into their terms respectively," Newsweek reported.

Biden, who has been in office for 43 days now, has yet to hold a solo conference — a historic lack of transparency. Using data from the American Presidency Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara, CNN White House reporter Kevin Liptak highlighted that Biden set the record for the longest stretch at the start of a presidency without a press conference.

"As we await word on when President Biden will hold his first solo press conference, an analysis of the past 100 years shows he is behind his 15 most recent predecessors, who all held a solo press conference within 33 days of taking office," Liptak reported.

Ronna McDaniel, the chair of the Republican National Committee, tweeted Wednesday, "It's been 42 days and Joe Biden still refuses to hold a press conference. Why is he so afraid of answering questions?"

Jason Miller, a former senior adviser to the Trump administration, posted the dates of previous first joint session speeches by recent U.S. presidents.

Zach Parkinson, the former deputy director of communications for Trump, shared a graph exposing how Biden has avoided holding press conferences in comparison to other American presidents after they entered office.

On Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked if there are plans for Biden to hold his first press conference.

"Not yet, but we will definitely have one," Psaki replied. "We will schedule it, and you'll be the first to know because you're pivotal participants in that."

On Wednesday, Psaki said, "We look forward to holding a full formal press conference, but in the meantime the President takes questions from the reporters covering the White House regularly, including this morning."

Michigan: Roughly 100,000 outstanding ballots still need to be counted; Biden’s lead likely to increase

President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden are in a hotly contested race in the battleground state of Michigan, where Biden has taken the lead with a large number of outstanding absentee ballots yet to be counted.

Roughly 96% of the vote has been counted as of Wednesday morning, with Biden leading Trump by around 30,000 votes. Yet the Detroit Free Press reports that roughly 100,000 ballots still need to be counted before Michigan can announce the winner.

The remaining ballots are absentee ballots and are expected to tilt in favor of Biden, expanding his lead. The estimate of outstanding ballots is based on total voter participation numbers released by the state government.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said delays in the vote count were expected and that state election officials are working to ensure that every vote is counted.

"Election officials worked through the night to #CountEveryVote. That work continues," Benson tweeted Wednesday morning. "Hundreds of thousands of ballots in our largest jurisdictions are still being counted, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Warren & Sterling Heights. Every vote will count."

The areas with sizable outstanding votes include Wayne and Kent counties. Wayne County, which includes Detroit and has 67% of precincts reporting, is a Democratic stronghold in Michigan. In Kent County, which leans Republican, about 85% of precincts have fully reported.

With more votes to come in from Wayne County than any other area of Michigan, Biden is expected to make strong gains.

According to Benson, a record 5.26 million Michiganders voted in the 2020 election. More than 3.26 million votes were cast via absentee ballots, but Michigan state law prohibits clerks from counting ballots until the morning of the election, which is the reason for the delay.

State election officials believe the final results of the Michigan election will be known later today.

The vote count in Michigan is not without some discrepancies.

Results showing Biden winning staunchly Republican Antrim County were reportedly incorrect.

According to Zach Gorchow, the executive editor and publisher of Gongwer Michigan, vote totals from the county were transposed and, once corrected, should give both Trump and Republican Senate candidate John James about a 6,000 vote gain.

In 2016, Trump carried Michigan by 10,704 votes, several thousand votes fewer than Biden's apparent lead in 2020.

Down ballot, Republican Senate candidate John James appears to be outperforming President Trump, leading incumbent Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) by just 12,576 votes according to WJBK-TV. Still, the outstanding votes from Wayne County are expected to favor Democrats, which could push Peters over the finish line.

Given reported vote totals nationwide, the presidential election is likely to come down to whichever candidate can win 2 of 3 states — Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Late Wednesday morning, the Wisconsin Elections Commission declared "all of the votes have been counted" with Biden reportedly leading Wisconsin by 20,697 votes.
