Horowitz: One quality we need in a new House speaker

One overarching reason explains why America is collapsing and no serious effort has arisen in recent decades to halt the uniparty-driven decline. Every Republican or even conservative leader until now has feared the image of temporary disruption, chaos, and discord more than the permanent destruction of our life, liberty, economy, sovereignty, culture, and way of life. Hence the constant clamor to avoid a government shutdown or a debt-ceiling fight. And hence the aversion to intraparty fights.

We will not reverse this evil tide of tyranny until someone who represents the right side is more fearful of our societal and economic collapse than of a temporary lapse in federal funding.

Look at any Democrat leaders headed into a pivotal legislative or budgetary fight, and their passion, sense of mission, and indefatigable energy are palpable. They will pound the lectern, accusing their opponents of killing Grandma, the poor, veterans, and every rainbow identity under the sun. They will even invoke a degree of religious dogma in defense of their position and condemn their opponents to the pits of hell. From Nancy Pelosi or Hakeem Jeffries in the House to Chuck Schumer in the Senate, they are never off-message for a second. Even Joe Biden, despite his obvious cognitive decline, never wavers on his ideological commitment.

What do you hear from Republicans? To be fair, Senate Republicans these days actually do have passion and a sense of mission ... in the same ideological direction and for the same policy outcomes desired by Chuck Schumer.

But even the more “conservative” House leaders and committee chairmen will call for bipartisanship, laud the minutiae of process, warn against shutting down the government, and espouse banal and conciliatory talking points designed neither to galvanize the base nor convert swing voters.

Where is the fire in the belly? Where is the equal and opposing force? How come we never have Republican leaders draw a line and say, “We will not fund your lawless invasion at the border for one day past the fiscal year.” Or “we will not fund the bankrupting of American families and the financial collapse that are destroying our standard of living today.” We never have leaders to who evoke the morality of our positions the way Democrats propagate the immorality of theirs.

It doesn’t have to be this way. This unexpected speaker fight provides us with a new opportunity to finally pursue a leader who actually shares our values, but most importantly — in this age when political messaging is crucial — is able to articulate our view from a position of strength.

Republicans are already falling into the trap of looking for the “next man in line” rather than the most effective voice. They are seeking to elevate Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the current No. 2 Republican, who was a part of this same leadership structure that not only failed us this year but even during trifecta control in 2017-2018. Then, other members of the Republican leadership would ascend another rung on the ladder.

SCOOP: Rep. Tom Emmer has begun making calls to members ahead of a likely bid for majority leader, according to a Republican with direct knowledge.

And Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.), who is Emmer’s deputy whip, is also making calls to be whip.
— Olivia Beavers (@Olivia Beavers) 1696425840

This “next in line” mentality is what saddled us with Kevin McCarthy after he was elevated from whip to majority leader following the shocking defeat of then-leader Eric Cantor. After I helped former Rep. Dave Brat defeat Cantor in his central Virginia district, I even warned at the time of the emergency race for majority leader in June 2014 that the decision to elevate McCarthy was tone-deaf to the demand for change from GOP voters.

Swapping out Cantor for McCarthy would be the most tone deaf move of all if that is where the House heads
— Daniel Horowitz (@Daniel Horowitz) 1402523389

In an attempt to avoid “chaos” yet again, many Republicans will want to jump on a known horse who has a strong whip operation. But why are many Republicans so shortsighted? Some of them were even decrying — or literally crying about — the loss of jobs for McCarthy’s staff members.

Really? We are facing an unimaginable debt bomb that will crush the ability of all of us to live properly. We are facing the prospect of another 4 million illegal aliens, infiltrated with dangerous transnational gangs, coming over this year. What we are facing as a civilization is no longer a talking point. The crisis is real and requires immediate redress. Avoiding chaos and being steady, “mature,” and following precedent in themselves are not a solution.

Ironically, as we were all focused on the “chaos” of the House floor, most people didn’t realize the federal debt rose $275 billion in one day over the weekend, according to the latest Treasury Department update!

As all the uniparty members extolled the McCarthy bill to “avert a shutdown,” we actually perpetuated and exacerbated the ultimate shutdown over that very same weekend. Do you think we “avoided default” during the spring? Think again! With the debt increasing $450 billion in two weeks and $2 trillion since McCarthy’s debt-ceiling deal just four months ago, we are confronted with a death spiral of inflation, debt, and insolvency. Treasury yields are rising to shocking levels concurrent with the rapid acceleration of the debt, which itself is exploding the interest payments.

Consider the fact that we will now have to pay, at a minimum, $700 billion more on interest on the debt relative to pre-COVID levels. What that means is that the debt from the accumulation of outlays on our welfare state and entitlement programs is so enormous and metastasizing that even if we pretty much eliminated every single non-defense discretionary agency imaginable — including entire departments, such as education, housing, energy, commerce, and labor — we’d be no better off than we were in 2019 when facing certain insolvency back then.

We can’t absorb another year of record debt and inflation; another year of destruction of our energy, housing, and cars; another year of unchecked illegal immigration; another year of “died suddenly”; and another year of “arrested suddenly” for political beliefs.

Coming back to the speaker fight, even more than the technicalities of an open amendment process, the 72-hour rule, or respecting “regular order,” we need a no-drama, sincere believer and we need an articulator. We need someone who cares for our future more than he fears a temporary shutdown. We need a leader who, for once, shares our convictions. We already have one Democrat Party; we don’t need a second one.

We might have to agree on a compromise candidate, but why not start out with our best foot going forward? We must aim as high as possible because we can no longer afford “the lesser of two evils.”

Why is the 'greatest serial murder ever in American history' being COVERED UP?!

Not sure if you’ve noticed, but our culture has become rather apathetic when it comes to death. It seems we can’t even begin to process a tragedy before the next one strikes … and then the next one.

“We have this culture of death,” says Daniel Horowitz. “We become mind-numb robots at a time of the internet where we should know more than ever,” and yet “we know less than ever; we care about less than ever.”

“We’re gonna talk about a story that should be the greatest crime story of our lifetime, and I’m not exaggerating,” he says – a story that is “probably the greatest serial murder ever in American history.”

What’s perhaps most disturbing, however, is the fact that so few people know about this story.

Between the years of 2016 and 2018, Kenyan national Billy Chemirmir was accused of smothering 22 elderly women to death and stealing their jewelry in several different senior centers across the Dallas metroplex.

But there are likely dozens more who died at Chemirir’s hand – victims who will never receive the justice they are owed.

Despite loads of evidence – DNA, blood, stolen jewelry, break-ins, and suspiciously proximate deaths – Chemirmir’s killing spree went on for two years, but “nothing was done security-wise … [or] in terms of police investigators,” Horowitz explains.

It wasn’t until an alleged victim miraculously survived Chemirmir’s attacks that he was finally identified.

However, Chemirmir has only been convicted of two murders and has now escaped the death penalty. Collin County, a notoriously conservative division, “will not seek the death penalty” despite the fact that “they caught the guy a million times over with every form of evidence you can imagine,” says Horowitz.

“This implicates jailbreak; it implicates the lack of death penalty; it implicates our criminal alien problem we have; it implicates the lack of regard for the lives of our seniors – ageism against older people; and frankly also implicates racism, because particularly the older generation is viewed as mainly white and they’re expendable,” says Horowitz.

What’s even more upsetting is that these tragic deaths could have been avoided.

The crime began long before Chemirmir went on his murderous rampage. He was granted a tourist visa in July 2003 from Kenya but became an illegal alien when he overstayed his visa by several years. Somehow, Chemirmir was able to obtain a green card through a marriage that was likely fake, all while living illegally in the United States.

“Just from an immigration standpoint alone, this guy should have been out,” says Horowitz. According to the law, “anyone who remains [in the U.S.] illegally is not only deported but barred from re-entering the country for ten years, but they liberally created this loophole in law and allowed him to remain.”

Further, before the killings began, Chemirmir was indicted on three separate occasions for DWIs and charged with causing bodily injury to his girlfriend.

“This man should have been deported many times over,” Horowitz says.

But he wasn’t, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It gets so much worse.

Joining Horowitz on the show are Ellen French House and Cheryl Pangburn, the daughters of two of Chemirmir’s victims.

Together they discuss “the most unbelievable story of all time.”

Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler says it would have been child abuse for parents not to mask 2-year-olds before COVID-19 vaccines were available

Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York unabashedly expressed support for mandatory masking for 2-year-old children, asserting that parents would have been committing child abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic if they opted not to mask their 2-year-old kids because masks were the only option to protect those young people when there was not yet a vaccine available for them.

Nadler, who noted that in the past he had to be vaccinated before going to school, spoke in favor of vaccine mandates. He said vaccinations are necessary "to prevent diseases" as well as "pandemics."

The long-serving left-wing lawmaker who has been in office for over three decades said that a nurse caring for patients could transmit disease and should be required to be vaccinated. Getting vaccinated "not only protects her, it protects against transmission," he claimed, adding that health care workers "certainly" should be required to get vaccinated.

"Your 2-year-old should be forced to be masked. That is what the Ranking Member ... just said," Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas declared, adding that Nadler was saying the federal government should be involved in requiring 2-year-old kids to wear masks.

"Chip having a field day!" TheBlaze's Daniel Horowitz tweeted in response to a clip of Roy's remarks.

"Thank you, @chiproytx for your steadfast calling out of the Covid cult!" someone else tweeted.

"When your adversary is losing - let him," Roy tweeted.

"They have no regrets about harming kids in the name of COVID. If given the chance…they'll do it again," the DeSantis War Room Twitter account tweeted.

Horowitz: The shocking degree of political betrayal from Kevin McCarthy

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://assets.rebelmouse.io/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8zMzc3MDA2My9vcmlnaW4uanBnIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTcxMTE2NzExOH0.MfXRV9WvJdrGGLkEJQ0S7Q7zo5z55dLccj64KDHCTs0/img.jpg?width=1200&height=800&coordinates=0,0,0,1 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//assets.rebelmouse.io/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8zMzc3MDA2My9vcmlnaW4uanBnIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTcxMTE2NzExOH0.MfXRV9WvJdrGGLkEJQ0S7Q7zo5z55dLccj64KDHCTs0/img.jpg%3Fwidth%3D1200%26height%3D800%26coordinates%3D0%2C0%2C0%2C1%22%7D" expand=1]

Imagine a family facing impending bankruptcy while suddenly hitting their credit limit. Typically, that family would make serious lifestyle changes to balance the budget, and if they found it necessary to take out a new line of credit, they would only do so for the minimal amount necessary for a short period of time. Well, when it comes to the uniparty in Washington, after the $11 trillion COVID spending and money-printing orgy, they responded to calls for spending cuts and reforms … by allowing an all-you-can-eat debt buffet from now until 2025! Don’t worry, they gave us a couple of spending and accounting gimmicks in return.

The central flaw in McCarthy’s approach to this deal was his entire messaging in the lead-up to this act of political adultery. Rather than drawing a line in the sand on the GOP-passed bill and then making the battle about debt, inflation, and the weaponization of government, he made the battle about getting Biden to negotiate and about not defaulting on the debt. In other words, he conveyed the message that Republicans fear not raising the debt limit just as much as the Democrats. Perforce, Biden easily agreed to “negotiate” so McCarthy could say he got “something” other than a “clean” debt limit increase. Once Biden agreed to negotiate and McCarthy wrongly validated June 1 as a drop-dead deadline, he had no leverage left. Hence, the interception rather than a touchdown in the form of the debt ceiling bill.

And make no mistake about it, this was a political interception. Not only did this bill enshrine the biblical and apocalyptic levels of spending into law – not only did it jettison all of the meaningful provisions of the GOP bill – it gave Biden more debt credit than what was on the table. The assumption from every GOP member was that the debt limit would be increased for one year. Instead, McCarthy, along with his negotiators, Reps. Patrick McHenry (N.C.) and Garret Graves (La.), agreed to suspend the entire debt limit for the rest of Biden’s presidency. Worse, there is no dollar limit, so that Biden can now run up the tab for the remainder of his presidency. It will be at least $4 trillion in additional debt, but likely more.

— Rep. Ken Buck (@Rep. Ken Buck) 1685307888

Worse, the only other leverage point Republicans have is the annual appropriation bills. But now that Republicans agreed to top-line spending numbers for the next two years, they don’t have much leverage to fight on the budget bills either. Sure, this bill does have a trigger that induces automatic 1% cuts to discretionary spending if they fail to agree on appropriation bills, but a 1% cut is no longer sufficient if working off the insane baseline of spending enshrined last year by Biden and McConnell in the omnibus bill.

McCarthy is acting like it’s 1998. Yes, back then, a slight cut in baseline spending increases and some modest increased work requirements for a few welfare programs might be worth supporting. The COVID spending, however, has made our budget insolvent and our inflation unsustainable. It is truly hard to comprehend how unprecedented the COVID spending is. Aside from the monetary printing, our budget essentially went from $4.4 trillion to $6.4 trillion overnight! It typically took 15 years for our budget to expand by such a sum of cash. With COVID over, it is indefensible to continue working off this baseline. Talking about 1990s-era welfare reforms – and very nebulous at that – is laughable relative to the issues we face both with top-line spending and debt, as well as the woke and weaponized bureaucracies flush with ungodly sums of cash.

As such, even the House-passed bill was very modest. But at least it vitiated the Green New Deal, the 80,000 new IRS agents, and the student loan bailout, while instituting the REINS Act to force all new government regulations to get approval from Congress. The polling on the GOP position was terrific, and even the media was surprised at how Republicans were finally winning a budget issue. In the worst-case scenario, we would have given Biden $1.5 trillion in new debt in return for a watered-down version of this bill.

Instead, McCarthy gave Biden at least $4 trillion (but potentially unlimited until 2025) in return for nothing. The lawmakers cleverly jettisoned all the meaningful provisions of the bill and left the nebulous ones, such as clawing back already unspent COVID funds and ill-defined permitting reform while enshrining the Green New Deal. Oh, they cut $1.9 billion from the NEW additional $80 billion in funding for the IRS. What a joke!

Even the budget caps that lock in last year’s spending levels will really wind up locking in this year’s levels. As the New York Times reports, “White House officials say a series of side deals with Republicans, including one related to funding for the Internal Revenue Service, will allow actual funding to be closer to this year’s levels."

McCarthy replaced the REINS Act, which requires Congress to approve new regulations, with an honor system allowing Biden’s own OMB to accept commensurate cuts paired against new regulations, which the director can either waive or hollow out with notional cuts.

Additionally, here are a few more important observations on the bill:

 • Ironically, the only real savings come from already unspent COVID funds. Not only does this bill fail to uproot the COVID biomedical security state that led to this inflation bomb, it continues exempting the worst elements – mitigation efforts, vaccines, and genomic sequencing (potential gain of function) from recissions.
“So the only real savings in the bill are from unspent covid funding, but even that funding is kept for the WORST elements of the biomedical security state. These three provisions would save money for vaccines, testing and mitigation, and "genomic sequencing and surveillance,"…”
— Daniel Horowitz (@Daniel Horowitz) 1685368878
 • Democrats are fully supporting this bill. This is astounding given that Republicans control the House and had the upper hand on the politics of this issue. It’s a reflection of McCarthy’s (and Trump’s) tenure in leadership last decade when every major budget bill passed with more Democrat support than Republican votes, despite the GOP having controlled the chamber.
 • While making nebulous cuts to the record high baseline growth of discretionary spending, the bill will increase mandatory spending by 5% and increase military spending 3%, after a $70 billion surge last year. At some point, Republicans need to kick their habit of aimless and unlimited spending for defense lobbyists until we fix the culture of this woke and broken military.
 • According to the CBO, we are slated to spend $80 trillion over the next 10 years, and there’s never been an era when the CBO has not lowballed the cost of government. The blank check for the remainder of the Biden presidency will allow him to create the “next current thing,” such as Ukraine or COVID, which will be used to override the budget caps, but will not require an extra politically perilous vote on raising the debt limit.

We all know McCarthy has a narrow majority, which is why we all tried to rally behind the House bill and give him some leeway. We could even have accepted less than the GOP House bill. But to jettison every important reform, make a mockery of the others, and do so in a way that precludes us from coming back for more throughout Biden’s presidency – all while leading in the polls against a dead carcass of a president – is not just political malpractice but an act of political betrayal.

Manchin sends defiant message to Biden over proposed gov't rules that could prohibit nearly all gas stoves

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) rebuked the Biden administration for proposing new energy conservation rules that would, according to Manchin, prohibit most gas stoves.

What about the rules?

On Wednesday, the Department of Energy proposed new rules for "energy conservation standards for consumer conventional cooking products," which would affect both gas and electric stoves and ovens.

The benefits of the updated rule, the agency alleges, include energy savings and environmental kickbacks.

The proposed rules come after widespread outrage against the Biden administration for allegedly considering a ban on gas stoves. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Alexander Hoehn-Saric later denied the government was considering any such rule, but Fox News has since reported on internal administration memos showing a ban was, in fact, under consideration.

What did Manchin say?

At a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing, Manchin said the proposed Energy Department rules would negatively impact 96% of all gas stoves.

"Gas stoves have been in the news lately and I've come out strongly against the Consumer Product Safety Commission pursuing any ban of gas stoves," he began.

"I've always been a proponent of energy efficiency," he continued. "But the draft rule proposes efficiency levels that DOE says at the highest level, up to 96% of gas stoves don't currently meet. I don't like where I think they're going with this."

Manchin then made it clear he will not relinquish his gas stove.

"And I'll tell you one thing: They're not taking my gas stove out. And my wife and I would both be upset," he said. "The federal government doesn't have any business telling American families how to cook their dinner. If there's technology down the road, and as we transition into new technology, that's fine. But basically retrofitting or removing stoves that people have had for years is not going to happen."

— Daniel Turner (@Daniel Turner) 1675356414

Meanwhile, Manchin introduced legislation, alongside Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), that would prevent the government from prohibiting gas stoves or imposing regulations that would make them unaffordable.

The bill is appropriately titled the "Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act."

Migrants refuse relocation from $280/night NYC hotel; NYPD clears encampment near Hell's Kitchen

Police were dispatched to the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan Sunday night when a group of migrants housed in a hotel there refused relocation to a Brooklyn shelter.

"This weekend, we began the process of moving single adults[sic] males form the Watson Hotel to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, as we transition the hotel to meet the large number of asylum seeking families with children," said New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a statement obtained by Fox 5 NY.

"The facilities at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal will provide the same services as every other humanitarian relief center in the city," the statement also said.

More than 50 migrants protested the move to the Brooklyn facility, setting up camp outside the hotel Sunday night, according to the National Review. Some of the migrants visited the new shelter, but returned to the hotel after finding conditions there unsatisfactory, the outlet also reported.

One of Sunday's protesters described the facility as an "icebox" with "hundreds of cots in warehouse-like rooms, few bathrooms, and little heat," according to a report published at W42St.com.

The NYPD cleared the migrants' tents from blocking the sidewalk along 57th Street on Monday around 11 a.m., ABC 7 NY reported.

A Twitter user documenting part of the scene last night, described it as a "mini-riot," and shared a brief video. The video shows a crowd gathered in front of the Watson Hotel along with a number of police officers, emergency vehicles, and a bus.

“There was a mini-riot outside the hotel next door to me where @NYCMayor has been housing migrants. The location is being changed from housing single men to housing migrant families, so the men are being moved elsewhere (hence the buses) and are not happy about it.”
— Daniel de la Fé (@Daniel de la Fé) 1675040140

"The former residents pounded on the [Watson Hotel's] door and pressed their faces against the glass, yelling 'Open!' as security guards and staff watched on from the inside," according to the Villager, which posted several photographs of the chaotic scene.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the opening of a fifth "Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center" at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on January 21, 2023. In that announcement, he noted that the facility "will provide approximately 1,000 asylum seekers with a place to stay, access support, and get to their final destination."

"Since this humanitarian crisis began, the city has taken fast and urgent action. . .opening 77 hotels as emergency shelters and four other humanitarian relief centers already, standing up navigation centers to connect asylum seekers with critical resources, enrolling children in public schools through Project Open Arms, and more," the statement concluded.

Heartbreaking video taken by a passenger on a doomed flight shows the final moments before the commercial airplane crashed in Nepal and killed at least 68 of the 72 people onboard.

Officials have confirmed that 68 are dead in the crash of a Nepal-based Yeti Airways plane on Sunday. Four people remain missing. The tragic crash is Nepal's deadliest airplane accident in three decades.

The twin-engine ATR-72 plane was making a brief 27-minute flight from Nepal's capital of Kathmandu to the tourist town of Pokhara.

Video from a witness on the ground shows the airliner falling fast and rolling to the point that the wings are nearly at a 90-degree with the ground. The airplane goes out of the frame of the video, then suddenly a loud boom is heard in the background.

In another video of the plane crash, a passenger unwittingly recorded the final moments before the catastrophe.

The Times of India reported that one of the passengers was livestreaming the flight to Facebook. The video shows the plane flying low over Pokhara as seen through the passenger window. One of the passengers is enjoying the flight and is heard saying, "Mauj kar di," meaning, "It's real fun."

However, seconds later tragedy strikes as the plane plummets. The plane appears to bank sharply to one side, and passengers are heard on the video screaming. Suddenly, the video goes dark. Then the gutwrenching video shows the plane engulfed in flames.

The plane crashed into a gorge, and the pilot averted hitting buildings in the area.

Hundreds of emergency rescue workers attempted to save any survivors of the Nepal plane crash. However, the flames from the plane were too hot to get close to the wreckage in the immediate aftermath.

Local resident Bishnu Tiwari told the Associated Press, "The flames were so hot that we couldn’t go near the wreckage. I heard a man crying for help, but because of the flames and smoke, we couldn’t help him.”

There were 72 people on the flight – 68 passengers and four crew members.

Yeti spokesman Sudarshan Bartaula said that there were 15 foreigners on board the plane, including five Indians, four Russians, two South Koreans, and one passenger each from Argentina, Australia, France, and Ireland.

Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority said it was not immediately clear as to what caused the plane crash.

An investigation into the deadly plane crash has been launched.

Socialist EU vice president arrested, accused of taking bribes from Arab state to influence European parliament

A Greek socialist serving as vice president of the European Union's parliament was arrested in Belgium for allegedly taking bribes to "influence the economic and political decisions" of the EU on behalf of Qatar.

The EU vice president's arrest comes amidst 16 raids conducted by Belgian police across Brussels as part of a broader investigation into corruption involving Qatar, Morocco, and socialist members of the EU.

Redistributing Arab wealth to European socialists

Eva Kaili, 44, a member of the European Parliament since 2014, was arrested on Friday along with four Italians, reported the Free Press Journal.

Kaili was subsequently suspended by her Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group in the European parliament as well as back home by her Greek socialist party, Pasok-Movement for Change.

Luca Visentini, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, former socialist MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, and Kaili's so-called "life partner," Francesco Giorgi, were reportedly three of the four other persons detained.

A warrant obtained by Politico indicated that Panzeri was accused of "intervening politically with members working at the European Parliament for the benefit of Qatar and Morocco."

According to Belgium's federal prosecutor, €600,000 ($632,606.34) in cash were discovered in the raids. Computer equipment and mobile phones were also seized, and will be examined as part of the investigations.

The Daily Mail reported that the searches were executed as part of a broader probe into "criminal organization, corruption and money laundering."

Qatar is believed to have attempted to influence the European Parliament by "paying large sums of money or offering large gifts to third parties with a significant political and/or strategic position within the European Parliament," reported Deutsche Welle.

Money well spent

Kaili claimed that Qatar, a country with a history of human rights violations, was a "frontrunner in labor rights," despite claims that thousands of migrant workers may have died building stadiums for the World Cup. Late last month, the Qatari government acknowledged that at least 400 workers had perished during construction. Newsweek suggested that nearly 6,500 workers may have died since construction began when FIFA's Executive Committee tapped Qatar as the host 10 years ago.

The Greek socialist also said the Qataris "are a new generation of intelligence, high-educated people. ... They helped us. And they are peace negotiators. They are good neighbours and partners."

Kaili added, "Still, some here are calling to discriminate them. ... They bully them, and they accuse everyone that talks to them or engages of corruption."

The Greek socialist said in a video posted to Twitter by the Qatar News Agency, "I believe the World Cup for Arabs has been a great tool for... political transformation and reforms," reported the Daily Mail.

Qatari media claimed that on her recent trip to Qatar, Kaili spoke of "enhancing the understanding between peoples of EU and Qatari people and improving their perception of each other."

It would appear, cash is universally understood.

Kaili's S&D group in the European parliament claimed in a statement that it was "appalled by the allegations of corruption in the European institutions" and had "zero tolerance for corruption."

The S&D party also requested "the suspension of work on any files and plenary votes regarding the Gulf States, particularly visa liberalisation and planned visits.”

The S&D group has ostensibly worked hard in recent months not to upset the Qataris, fighting calls to boycott the World Cup games.

Belgian socialist Marc Tarabella said, "There are high standards of safety in place [in Qatar] for workers, and implementation of minimum wages."

S&D group leader Iratxe García Perez reportedly displaced blame from Qatar to the FIFA, and claimed that the World Cup in the Arab state should be regarded as a chance "to bring everyone together to promote freedom, equality, human rights."

Former federal attorney suggests Trump is guilty because he invoked 5th Amendment rights. The backlash is bipartisan.

A former federal prosecutor triggered bipartisan backlash on Wednesday for suggesting that invoking Fifth Amendment rights implies guilt.

What is the background?

On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump invoked his constitutional rights against self-incrimination, declining to answer questions at a deposition for New York Attorney General Letitia James (D).

Trump announced he invoked his Fifth Amendment rights after arriving to the deposition. The statement explained:

I once asked, "If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?" Now I know the answer to that question. When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors and the Fake News Media, you have no choice.

For more than three years, James has been probing Trump's business practices as part of a civil investigation.

What did the prosecutor say?

Daniel Goldman, who served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the southern district of New York for 10 years, suggested Trump is relaying guilt because he invoked his constitutionally protected rights.

"The Fifth Amendment ensures that people are not forced to incriminate themselves. But you don’t take the Fifth if you didn’t do anything wrong," Goldman said on Twitter.

“The Fifth Amendment ensures that people are not forced to incriminate themselves.

But you don’t take the Fifth if you didn’t do anything wrong.”
— Daniel Goldman (@Daniel Goldman) 1660144767

Goldman is no stranger to Trump.

The former federal prosecutor, who is now running for Congress as a Democrat, served as lead counsel in both impeachment cases against Trump.

What was the response?

New York attorney Eliza Orlins said Goldman's remarks demonstrate "why we don’t trust prosecutors."

"They lie through their teeth, and they don't operate in the best interests of the people (you and me!) they're alleging to represent," Orlins said. "There is *nothing* incriminating about taking the Fifth. It’s a right that every American—yes, including terrible former presidents—has. And should use!"

Former Assistant Attorney General Jeff Clark, who served in the Trump administration, called Goldman's remarks a "disgraceful position."

"Contrary to Constitution. Contrary to Supreme Court 5th Amend. jurisprudence. An indication that any oaths you took while in the fed'l gov't were a farce," Clark said. "No way you'd be saying this if it were the Clintons or Bidens."

Law reporter Chris Geidner, himself a lawyer, said Goldman's remarks prove why America needs fewer prosecutors in power.

"For the record, s*** like this is why I talk so much about needing more former public defenders — and fewer former prosecutors — on the bench," Geidner tweeted.

Meanwhile, Institute for Justices senior attorney Paul Sherman accused Goldman of lying to score political points.

"Mr Goldman is a Stanford-trained former federal prosecutor and he knows with 100% certainty that this is not true. He’s comfortable lying about it because he’s running for office, and we’ve convinced ourselves that lying is okay if it secures power for your team," Sherman said.

On D-Day anniversary, Democrat running for Florida attorney general tweets, 'My great grandparents died in Nazi Germany. I know a fascist when I see one. Ron DeSantis is a fascist'

Daniel Uhlfelder, a lawyer who is running in the Democratic primary for Florida attorney general, is calling Gov. Ron DeSantis "a fascist."

"My great grandparents died in Nazi Germany. I know a fascist when I see one. Ron DeSantis is a fascist," Uhlfelder tweeted on June 6, which is the anniversary of the historic D-Day invasion carried out by Allied forces during World War II in 1944.

"We can't allow fascism to fester. That’s why we have to get rid of Ron DeSantis and his sidekick Attorney General," Uhlfelder added in another tweet, while soliciting campaign donations.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican who has become a tremendously popular figure among conservatives, and Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, who is also a Republican, are both seeking re-election this year.

"Politicians will say literally anything to get votes and money for their campaigns. Even if it means standing on the graves of their dead relatives to make completely asinine and absurd comparisons," ZUBY tweeted in response to Uhlfelder. "Every time I think they can't stoop lower, they stoop lower. It's astonishing," he added in another tweet.

A tweet from another account declared, "Disgusting how you use your great grandparents as a prop for your political ambitions. Maybe crack open a book and learn what fascism is."

"Very sorry to hear that about your great grandparents, but you need a serious dose of reality bud," another tweet declared.

Uhlfelder has previously called DeSantis "a fascist." He has also claimed that the governor "loves Nazis."

"When Ron DeSantis says 'freedom' he really means freedom for rich, white, heterosexual men. It's about time Florida had freedom for everybody," Uhlfelder tweeted last month.

Uhfelder infamously showed up to beaches clad in a grim reaper costume in 2020, contending that it was too soon to reopen beaches due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
