Alice Stewart, veteran GOP advisor and CNN commentator, dies at 58 just hours after appearing on network: 'Can't believe she's gone'

Alice Stewart, a veteran GOP adviser and CNN political commentator, has died. She was 58.

Stewart's body was found outdoors in the northern Virginia neighborhood of Bellevue on Saturday morning, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said no foul play was suspected in her death and that Stewart likely suffered a medical emergency.

Just hours before her death, Stewart appeared on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" on Friday evening.

Stewart launched her career as a local reporter and producer in Georgia. She then worked as a news anchor in Little Rock, Arkansas.

From there, she became the communications director for then-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's 2008 campaign for president.

Stewart also served as communications director for GOP presidential candidates, including former Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, and Sen. Ted Cruz.

Tributes poured in for the longtime GOP adviser.

Sen. Cruz said in a post on the X social media platform, "Alice was wonderful and talented and a dear friend. She lived every day to the fullest, and she will be deeply missed."

Former Republican Congresswoman Barbara Comstock stated, "So saddened to hear of the sudden passing of ⁦Alice Stewart. Alice was a smart, principled and talented role model for women in politics and media and always a delight to be with. She will be missed."

Kellyanne Conway – ex-counselor to former President Donald Trumpsaid, "Alice Stewart was a remarkable woman of faith, a friend & colleague. She was the same person on-air & off-air: smart, witty, authentic, kind, respectful, insightful. She took the time to help those next in line. I loved &respected Alice & will miss her."

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie honored Stewart by saying, "I am stunned and saddened by the news of Alice Stewart’s passing. She was a political pro and a wonderfully nice person to just have a conversation with on any topic. I will miss Alice and will pray for her family."

Alyssa Farah Griffin – ex-communications director for former President Trump – remarked, "Gutted over this news. Alice Stewart was smart, savvy, funny & most importantly kind. She felt like she was from another era - a more decent one where we'd disagree respectfully. She was kind to me when I was in a low place & I’ll never forget it. Sending love to those closest to her."

Stewart was hired by CNN as a political commentator ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer stated, "I’m so sad that my friend and CNN colleague Alice Stewart has passed away. It was only yesterday when she joined Maria Cardona and me for her always excellent political analysis. She was a very special person and we will miss her. May she Rest In Peace and may her Memory Be A Blessing."

CNN anchor Jake Tapper said, "Horrible news about our beloved and gifted commentator Alice Stewart. Just awful. We are all gutted."

Political commentator Ana Navarro stated, "I'm very sad about this news. Alice was kind, decent, hard-working and a woman whose faith sustained her. She was a breath of fresh air – always professional – at a time when lack of decorum and civility reign in political discussions. May she rest in peace."

CNN anchor Jim Acosta added, My heart is broken over the passing of our dear colleague Alice Stewart. We’ve been friends going back to the 2012 campaign. We spent so many weekends talking politics with the wonderful Maria Cardona – they always spoke so passionately but with kindness and civility. Alice was my friend and I loved her. RIP."

Democratic political strategist Maria Cardona said, "I am turned inside out at this tragic news. As many know, Alice & I were like sisters from opposite ends of the political aisle. We debated but with respect. I will miss her dearly but seems God needed some top-notch communications help. RIP beautiful friend."

CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins expressed, "Just devastating news about our colleague Alice Stewart. She will always be remembered by her kindness above all."

Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile said, "I first met Alice when she joined CNN. A smart, wise and affable colleague who will be missed. My condolences to her family and many colleagues and friends. Rest in peace."

Former CNN anchor Poppy Harlow added, "Sending my love and support to Alice Stewart’s family tonight. She was a remarkable woman who I always loved having on our shows. She was whip-smart, deeply thoughtful, and always kind. She will be so missed."

CNN anchor Dana Bash paid her respects, "Alice Stewart was a woman’s woman who brought kindness and support along with smarts and expertise. I met her in Iowa in 2007 covering the Huckabee presidential campaign and worked with her in politics before I got to call her a CNN colleague. I can’t believe she’s gone."

Former CNN anchor Brian Stelter said, "Such an awful shock. Alice Stewart was a consummate pro who made every show she was on so much BETTER. More importantly, she had a huge heart and a generous spirit."

CNN host pulls out New Mexico Constitution when governor insists she has right to suspend gun rights: 'Where is the right?'

CNN anchor Poppy Harlow whipped out the New Mexico Constitution on Tuesday to ask Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) what empowers her to suspend gun rights.

In the interview, Lujan Grisham repeatedly attacked New Mexico law enforcement for opposing her order, which temporarily suspends open and concealed carry rights in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. She claimed her critics have no solution for gun violence, suggested law enforcement is ignoring the problem, and asserted anyone who opposes her is using "NRA talking points."

"It's not for police to tell me what's constitutional or not," the tyrant-in-training screeched.

Ad hominem attacks aside, Harlow directly confronted Lujan Grisham over her assertion that she has the "right" to suspend rights endowed to New Mexicans by the U.S. Constitution and the New Mexico Constitution.

"But where is the right? Where is the right?" the CNN anchor asked.

At first, Lujan Grisham tried to dodge the question. She invoked abortion rights, the NRA, and a recent Supreme Court case, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen. But Harlow had had enough and whipped out the New Mexico Constitution.

"The New Mexico Constitution, I looked last night. Article 2, Section 6, says this: 'No law shall abridge the right of citizens to keep and bear arms for security and defense. No municipality or county shall regulate in any way any incident the right to keep and bear arms,'" Harlow explained. "Are you not in violation of both the U.S. Constitution and your state's constitution?"

Lujan Grisham said her order does not violate the constitutions she swore to uphold, describing the actual text of her state constitution as a "narrow reading," as if the words themselves are an interpretation.

After the governor attacked law enforcement once more, Harlow confronted Lujan Grisham again, this time using her own admission that her order will not stop criminals from using guns. The governor denied she is using the order to make a "statement."

Finally, Harlow posed a hypothetical: "What if a Republican governor of a state declares a health emergency and unilaterally outlaws abortion in that state, where the legislature has not done so by statute? Following your logic, would that also be sound?"

Lujan Grisham responded that suspending abortion rights would not be OK because her order is "about protecting everyone's rights" and passing pro-life laws "is about restricting some rights."

But as Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen (D) explained, Lujan Grisham's order "only punishes law-abiding citizens" because "criminals do not follow the law or a public-health order," and thus the order does not protect anyone's rights. Tragically, that came true on Saturday when yet another Albuquerque resident lost their life to gun violence.

CNN host confronts top House Democrat with data that bucks her position on debt ceiling crisis: 'Out of step'

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) tried on Thursday to dismiss data showing a majority of Americans support cutting government spending.

But CNN host Poppy Harlow called her out on it.

What does the data show?

A majority of Americans, 60%, believe that Congress should raise the debt ceiling only if congressmembers simultaneously cut spending, according to a new CNN poll.

That figure includes 58% of independent voters and even 45% of Democratic voters.

What did Rep. Jayapal say?

In light of the poll data, Harlow asked Jayapal on "CNN This Morning" if her position on debt ceiling negotiations — that Republicans, who want to cut government spending if the debt ceiling is raised, are holding the situation "hostage" — is out-of-touch.

"Is your position out of step now, congresswoman, with the majority of the American people?" Harlow asked.

But instead of answering the question and confronting the data, Jayapal suggested there is a problem with the poll.

I think it's really important to look at what that poll says. If you just say to people, "Should we cut spending?" They will probably say yes. However, if you say would you rather cut spending and reduce the deficit by cutting the tax breaks to the wealthiest corporations and wealthiest individuals or would you like to cut your own health care, education, care for veterans, etc., I guarantee you that you would have even higher numbers that say, "Let's make sure that we're making the wealthy pay their fair share."

Harlow then stopped Jayapal in her tracks.

"But congresswoman, that's not what the poll says," the CNN host pointed out, who proceeded to re-read Jayapal the results of the poll.

\u201c"There is no way to square for the American people what they're saying in terms of they want to increase Pentagon spending."\n\n@RepJayapal says "there is only one person to blame and it's Speaker McCarthy" if the U.S. defaults:\u201d

Still, the Washington Democrat was not interested in addressing the data, and, of course, she used the opportunity to take a shot at Donald Trump.

"I understand. But Poppy, you can't take tax cuts out of spending. You know, tax cuts for the wealthiest are spending," Jayapal said. "Don't think that isn't spending when under Donald Trump they added almost $2 trillion to the deficit because they gave tax cuts to the wealthiest. That is spending."

Jayapal, who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has repeatedly urged President Joe Biden not to concede to Republicans and agree to cut spending.

Don Lemon apologizes for 'sexist' and 'completely offensive' comment about Nikki Haley and women in their prime

CNN host Don Lemon issued an apology for comments that were deemed "sexist" and "completely offensive" that he made against Nikki Haley and women who he considered to be out of their prime.

On Wednesday, Haley made a veiled slight against former President Donald Trump, 76, and President Joe Biden, 80. Haley called for "mandatory mental competency tests" for politicians over the age of 75.

"America is not past our prime — it's just that our politicians are past theirs," Haley said during a rally in South Carolina that launched her 2024 White House bid.

"If you're tired of losing, put your trust in a new generation," Haley added.

Speaking about Haley's remarks, Don Lemon strangely talked about the prime ages of women.

"This whole talk about age makes me uncomfortable," Lemon said during "CNN This Morning." "I think it’s the wrong road to go down."

"She says people, you know, politicians are suddenly not in their prime. Nikki Haley isn’t in her prime. Sorry, when a woman is in their prime in 20s and 30s and maybe 40s," the 56-year-old Lemon said of the 51-year-old Haley.

Co-host Poppy Harlow was befuddled by Lemon's comments.

Harlow asked Lemon, "Wait. Prime for what?"

"That’s not according to me," Lemon deflected.

Harlow again asked, "Prime for what?"

Lemon replied, "It depends, it’s just like, prime."

Lemon attempted to blame Google for his comments.

"If you look it up, if you Google ‘when is a woman in her prime’ it’ll say 20s, 30s, and 40s," Lemon argued. "I'm not saying I agree with that."

Harlow questioned Lemon, "Are you talking about prime for, like, childbearing? Or are you talking about prime for being president?"

Lemon said, "Don't shoot the messenger."

"I'm just saying what the facts are. Google it. Everybody at home, when is a woman in her prime? It says 20s, 30s, and 40s," Lemon backtracked. "I'm just saying, Nikki Haley should be careful about saying that [politicians] are not in their prime, and that they need to be in their prime when they serve, because she wouldn’t be in her prime, according to Google or whatever it is."

Haley responded to Lemon's comments by saying, "Liberals can't stand the idea of having competency tests for older politicians to make sure they can do the job. BTW it's always the liberals who are the most sexist."

Former CNN correspondent Kate Bennett blasted Lemon.

"This is sexism, and completely offensive. And it’s amplified by the 'sets off' description below," Bennet wrote on Twitter. "Can women not respond to a boneheaded statement without being accused of overreaction? Also, who over the age of 14 uses 'google it!' as a defense."

Lemon issued an apology on Thursday.

"The reference I made to a woman's 'prime' this morning was inartful and irrelevant, as colleagues and loved ones have pointed out, and I regret it," Lemon tweeted. "A woman's age doesn't define her either personally or professionally. I have countless women in my life who prove that every day."

"CNN This Morning" is languishing in the ratings, notching the network’s lowest-rated morning show in nearly a decade.

The Wrap noted last week, "Since its Nov. 1, 2022 launch, 'CNN This Morning' — hosted by Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins — has drawn in the lowest viewership among adults 25-54, the key demographic for cable news, and the second-lowest total viewership among each iteration of the network’s morning programming since New Day' was launched in June 2013, according to Nielsen data."
