Lousiana Republicans, Democrats Advance Bill Granting Immunity For Killing Embryos
Two bills grant broad immunity to the IVF industry, and HB 833 redefines the word 'embryo' to remove references to an 'unborn child.'
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D) cut off Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) on Wednesday as he highlighted the horrors of an abortion procedure.
During a Senate Budget Committee hearing on the "economic harms of restricting reproductive freedom," Kennedy clashed with Middlebury College economic professor Caitlin Myers.
In their exchange, Myers agreed with the phrase, "reproductive justice is economic justice," far-left terminology to promote the supposed economic liberation of abortion access. Myers then refused to describe an unborn human as a "baby," but eventually admitted that abortions terminate the lives of unborn human children.

After the tussle, Kennedy displayed a photo of an unborn child at 21 weeks gestation, observing that it can "feel pain" because it is "pretty developed."
Then, in horrific detail, Kennedy began to describe the abortion process — known as a dilation and evacuation procedure — with an assist from Leslie Ford, a witness who Republicans called to the hearing.
"First, the doctor would dilate the cervix, and then the doctor would take what's called a sopher clamp — it's really a pair of pliers with sharp teeth on the end — and, without giving the baby any pain medication, the doctor would go through the vagina, through the uterus, and start tearing the baby apart, is that right?" Kennedy said.
"And [the doctor] might start with the legs and pull them out, and the arms and pull them out, right?" he continued. "And then she might go for the heart or the spine and just pull the baby out piece by piece. Is that right? Without giving the baby pain medication?"
"That's what I understand the procedure to be," Ford affirmed.
"OK, but then you've got to get the head out. The baby's dead. Maybe not. Maybe it's still in pain, but then you've got to get the head out, and — even with the cervix dilated — you've got to get the head out, which is hard," Kennedy described. "So, then the doctor would go in and use those pliers to crush the baby's head. Is that right? And then she'd pull the head out— the crushed skull out, right?"
"As far as I know," Ford confirmed.
It was at that point that Whitehouse interrupted Kennedy and insisted that his speaking time had expired. Kennedy fired back that others had gone over their time allotment. But Whitehouse wouldn't budge and called on the next senator.
"I'm sorry you don't want to hear about what happens in an actual abortion, but I thought that was what we were here to talk about," Kennedy protested.

A group of Republican lawmakers is backing a pro-life bill that would give mothers the opportunity to receive child support before a baby is born.
The Unborn Child Support Act reflects the reality that life starts at the time of conception, and therefore, pregnant mothers should be able to get child support as they carry their child.
The measure would insert language into the Social Security Act which states that "the start date for such obligations may begin with the first month in which the child was conceived, as determined by a physician (and shall begin with that month if the mother so requests)." The funds could "be retroactively collected or awarded," according to text.
GOP lawmakers in both chambers of Congress are pushing the proposal.
"Life begins at conception, and this bill is a straightforward first step towards updating our federal laws to reflect that fact. We are hopeful that Democrats will join this bicameral effort to provide mothers with child support payments while their child is in the womb," Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana said, according to a press release.
"Caring for the well-being of our children begins long before a baby is born. It begins at the first moment of life – conception – and fathers have obligations, financial and otherwise, during pregnancy. Mothers should be able to access child support payments as soon as she is supporting a child. Our bill makes this possible," Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said.
The lawmakers supporting the measure include Cramer, Johnson, Sens. Steve Daines of Montana, Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Rick Scott of Florida, Roger Marshall of Kansas, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, Marco Rubio of Florida, and Reps. Chris Smith of New Jersey, Jim Banks of Indiana, Doug Lamborn of Colorado, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, John Moolenaar Michigan, Doug LaMalfa of California, Randy Weber of Texas, Garret Graves of Louisiana, Jake Ellzey of Texas, Randy Feenstra of Iowa, and Claudia Tenney of New York.
Writer and author Jill Filipovic posted a tweet on Tuesday in which she described "Unborn child" as an "Orwellian" phrase meant to hinder people's ability to consider "human existence and life with necessary complexity."
"'Unborn child' is another one of these Orwellian terms designed to short-circuit our ability to think and speak about human existence and life with necessary complexity; the point is to use language as a vehicle for replacing reality with right-wing orthodoxy," Filipovic tweeted amid a lengthy thread.

One person responded to Filipovic's post by tweeting a gif of a baby and sarcastically declaring, "Behold! A advanced-age embryo."
Filipovic replied, "That's a baby Jerid."

"Here's the thing: 'Pro-life' folks say an 'unborn child' exists from the moment of conception. A fertilized egg is a child. An ectopic pregnancy is a child. But literally no one actually believes this -- including pro-lifers," Filipovic tweeted.
"Half of fertilized eggs do not implant, never form a pregnancy, and are flushed out of the body, but the pro-life movement has done nothing to save these lives. If you truly believe that a fertilized egg is a child, you're probably going to care even a little bit about that," she tweeted. "Do people believe that a fertilized egg is a human life? Yes. But that's different than 'a fertilized egg is the legal and moral equivalent of a child.' If anyone believed a fertilized egg was a child, they'd be spending time and money saving the majority of those eggs that die," she added.
Filipovic has previously claimed that men who have stay-at-home wives are more sexist compared to men whose wives work a job.
"More mothers at home makes for worse, more sexist men who see women as mommies and helpmeets. Men with stay-at-home wives are more sexist than men with working wives; they don’t assess women’s workplace contributions [fairly]; and they are less likely to hire and promote women," she tweeted earlier this year.
