Teen McDonald's employee leaps through drive-through window to save choking customer

A 15-year-old McDonald's employee executed a dramatic rescue after a customer began choking in her vehicle, which was idling outside the restaurant's drive-through window.

What are the details?

Sydney Raley of Edina, Minnesota, said that her Saturday shift at the chain restaurant's Eden Prairie location began uneventfully, just like many others.

She told CNN that the day had been fairly routine, "making coffee, making drinks. Going into the lunch rush, it was all normal."

Sydney told KARE-TV that all changed as she was handing food out through the service window and a woman in apparent distress caught her eye.

"I noticed that she was coughing profusely and her daughter just had this look on her face like sheer terror," the teen recalled. "I could tell oh, crap, she’s choking! Just seeing that visceral reaction I knew we need to act fast."

Sydney said that she jumped out of the window and helped the woman out of the car while telling the woman's young daughter to call 911.

"I started doing the Heimlich maneuver, but I’m not really strong so it didn’t work the first couple times," the 15-year-old hero continued — and that's when she called over a bystander who was parked in the lot waiting for food.

The bystander, who remains unnamed at the time of this reporting, was able to successfully dislodge a chicken nugget from the panicked woman's throat.

Police said that the teen's quick-thinking bravery earned her two fresh $50 bills from the responding officers.

"Our crime fund gave every officer fifty dollars to hand out to wherever we feel the need, [including] if somebody did outstanding work, above and beyond," Sgt. Scott Mittelstadt told KARE. "She is well-deserving of that money."

Sydney added, "It could’ve ended a lot worse but I am super thankful for that bystander who helped so much. Because I am decent at first aid, but if it weren’t for him and our efforts together, it could’ve ended so much worse."

'She can remember anything — do anything'

Sydney's parents, Tom and Stephanie, told the outlet that their daughter was diagnosed with autism when she was younger and that her condition has only enhanced her abilities for quick thinking.

"I always tell her she has a gift, because she's autistic," Tom told the station. "She can remember anything — do anything. It's crazy."

Stephanie added, "She remembered all of the [first aid] training as a script in her head and was able to jump into action right away, just because it was stored up there and she can recall anything she reads and hears."

Sydney said that she feels accomplished and emboldened to serve her fellow man.

"You feel as though like — huh — I’m actually capable of contributing to society and actually like capable of making a difference."

Tom told CNN that his daughter and her autism diagnosis are nothing short of inspiring.

"We always worried it was going to be a challenge for her, and it's done a complete 180," he said. "It's actually been a blessing and a gift at this point. All the things we worried about never happened."

'Sydney truly personifies what it is to be a hero'

Franchise owner-operator Paul Ostergaard told CNN that he and the rest of the staff couldn't be more proud of Sydney and her heroism.

"We are incredibly proud of Sydney and her quick, heroic actions over the weekend to help one of our valued customers," Ostergaard told CNN in a written statement. "Sydney truly personifies what it is to be a hero and we are incredibly lucky to have her as a highly-valued crew member at our Eden Prairie restaurant location. We are excited to see all of the well-deserved recognition she has received from the community and will continue to celebrate her courageous efforts of literally jumping out of the drive-thru window to provide aid to a customer in need."

Mother goes viral for teaching her daughters that virginity doesn't exist: 'Purity culture is toxic at its core'

A mother named Cayce LaCorte has gone viral for professing that she has taught her daughters that virginity doesn't exist and that purity culture is "toxic."

What are the details?

According to a Wednesday BuzzFeed report, LaCorte recently explained why the concept of virginity is nothing more than a social construct that ought to be ignored.

BuzzFeed noted at the time of its reporting that LaCorte's video went viral with more than 2 million views.

In the video, LaCorte says, "[Virginity] is a patriarchal concept used to control women and serves no purpose other than making women feel bad about ourselves. Just because some guy randomly sticks his penis in you at some point in your life does not change your worth, it does not change who you are, it doesn't do anything other than it happened."

"Sex is important," she adds. "It's a big deal. It should always be a big deal. It has nothing to do with your first time. ... It's just ridiculous. The whole concept is ridiculous."

In the video, LaCorte explains that she gets a lot of flak from other parents who worry that she is encouraging her daughters to be promiscuous.

"I am like, 'No, I am raising them to be good people that have solid foundations and make their own choices and make smart, intelligent choices,'" she adds.

'Makes me want to smash things'

BuzzFeed spoke to LaCorte, who said that many social media users who spoke out in support of the video were sexual assault survivors.

"We all have our own rape/assault/pressured into doing something I didn't want story," she told the outlet. "We can all empathize. For an entire society to tell you that your worth is tied to your virginity or your purity, then have someone take that from you? It's heartbreaking and infuriating and makes me want to smash things. We are so f***ing angry about all of this, and if I can make a single survivor feel better about themselves, then I've already succeeded."

LaCorte also insisted that parents should, instead, focus on teaching their kids about the stigma of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

"It's about the way we force arbitrary rules on ourselves and our kids and miss the big picture," she complained. "Instead, we could focus on education about pregnancy, STDs, self-worth. How about, instead of making the first time special, make sure it's always special because that's the bare minimum you deserve."

'Purity culture is toxic at its core'

She also told the outlet that if she were raising sons instead of daughters, she wouldn't approach the topic any differently.

"You have to battle against toxic masculinity, which is like rolling a boulder up a hill, but it can be done. I'd give the same talks about consent, diversity, love, boundaries, permission, and openness."

LaCorte also doubled down on her remarks from the original video.

"Purity culture is toxic at its core," she insisted. "Women are treated vastly different than men because its roots are steeped in a history of women being property. Can you imagine what the world would look like if society put half as much effort into making the world a safer place for women instead of worrying that she's not a virgin for her husband?"

Deceased Texas man goes viral after sharing moving advice in own obituary: Do not 'save things for nice' — 'nice' may never happen; life is lived now

A 75-year-old Texas man has posthumously gone viral after penning his own obituary, which was rife with personal anecdotes and heartfelt wisdom.

What are the details?

Lonnie Dillard, 75, an Austin resident, died on Dec. 18 — just a month after receiving a diagnosis of Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Upon receiving the sad news of his terminal state, Dillard went ahead and wrote his own obituary in a moving farewell letter.

"I suspect very few of you reading this notice knew me personally," he wrote. "You may merely be scanning today's obituary column out of boredom or morbid curiosity, like I used to do, for names or photos of people you know, have known, or known of. And perhaps mumbling a prayer, silently congratulating yourself, that you are not the one — not yet anyway — who has recently passed away."

He continued, "Whatever the reason for your attention, I hope to make your time worthwhile. Instead of cataloging careers and adventures I have had, honors I received, missteps I made or women I loved (I was blessed to have more than my share of each of these) or bemoaning how much my sparkling wit or wisdom will be missed, I thought it better to share a few of the big lessons I learned during my 75 eventful years on Planet Earth."

Dillard's first lesson? "A mother's unwavering love can turn a very ordinary little boy into an extra-ordinary man, if only in his own mind."

"Making and keeping friends, like tending a garden, requires attention and effort," he added. "Yet doing so yields greater returns than anything else you will ever do."

Dillard continued, "As Buddhists say: Be kind; everyone you meet is traveling a difficult journey. There is no substitute for a good deed; but simply helping a stranger laugh or smile can lighten a load, too."

"If your word is no good, chances are very good, you are not either," Dillard pointed out.

"Having money is always better than NOT having money," he added. "But beyond basic needs and a few luxuries, money is not a requirement for happiness. Enough really is enough; greed can hollow out the heart, even topple civilizations."

Dillard later insisted that learning is as important — if not more so — as anything else.

"Time spent learning — anything — is never time wasted," he added.

And speaking of waste — it's a sin, according to Dillard.

"Do not 'save things for nice,'" he continued. "Not the new guest room towels, the good crystal that will surely chip with everyday use, nor that ridiculously expensive jacket you bought on a lark in Florence. 'Nice' may never happen; life is lived now."

Dillard also insisted that happiness is "not the result of what does or does not happen to you in your life," but a "decision you make" on a daily basis.

He concluded, "Unfortunately, I did not know all these lessons all my life; some I paid very dearly to learn. Or re-learn. But I do know that if I could live my life over, I would want these as a starter kit."

The obituary for Dillard, who was married to his wife, Sandi Sain, for nearly 40 years, closed, "Lonnie Dillard was born May 7, 1945, and grew up in west Texas. He died at home in Austin on December 18, after learning of a diagnosis of stage four pancreatic cancer on November 11. Lonnie is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Sandi Sain, and friends too numerous and far-flung to mention."

Authorities arrest 1 in connection with violent attack on San Francisco free speech rally organizer

Authorities arrested a man in connection with an assault on a speaker at a San Francisco free speech rally that took place on Saturday.

A suspect punched the free speech rally organizer in the face, knocking out at least two of his teeth.

What are the details?

According to Newsweek, authorities arrested 35-year-old Adora Anderson of Watsonville, California, who is accused of "mayhem" and "hate crime enhancement" after reportedly punching 25-year-old Philip Anderson in the face.

Authorities say there is no relation between the men despite their shared last name.

Viral videos captured the moment that Philip was assaulted during the rally, which was referred to as a "Free Speech Rally Against Twitter and Big Tech." The demonstration was held at the federal building at U.N. Plaza, near Twitter's headquarters. The event was a protest against the company's censorship of the New York Post's article on emails purported to belong to Hunter Biden regarding foreign business dealings and his father, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

San Francisco police arrived on the scene on to respond to reports of an aggravated assault. Philip told authorities that he had been participating in the free speech rally when an unknown assailant punched him in the face.

A GoFundMe page to raise money to repair Philip's teeth has received more than $30,035 in donations at the time of this reporting.

A statement from the San Francisco Police Department read:

On Saturday, October 17, 2020, at approximately 12:20 PM, San Francisco Police officers responded to the area of Leavenworth and McAllister Streets for a report of an aggravated assault. Officers met with a 25-year-old male victim who identified himself as the victim of the assault. The victim told officers he was participating in a free speech rally at UN Plaza when he was punched in the face by an unknown suspect. The assault caused the victim to lose two teeth. The SFPD Night Investigations Unit and Special Investigations Unit led the investigation.

Investigators developed information that led to the identity of the suspect in the assault. The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Adora Anderson of Watsonville. On Sunday, October 18, 2020, at approximately 2:53 PM, Adora Anderson was taken into custody by San Francisco Police officers in Oakland, CA. Adora Anderson was transported to San Francisco County Jail where he was booked on charges of mayhem (203 PC) and a hate crime enhancement (422.75(a) PC).

While an arrest has been made, this remains an open investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD 24 Hour Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin your text message with SFPD. You may remain anonymous.

What else?

Authorities shut down the Saturday rally after counterdemonstrators became violent.

As previously reported by The Blaze, the situation quickly spiraled out of control against those conservatives gathered for the demonstration, and police were forced to escort them away from the premises and to their vehicles.

Following the assault, Philip told the crowd, "Too bad it got canceled. That's what happens when you lose free speech, this is what our country has turned into."

He also shared a snap of his bloodied mouth on social media after leaving the hospital.

He captioned the photo, "Antifa attacked me for no reason."

Philip later tweeted, "I have a question for you, Joe Biden. You said that Antifa is just an idea. This is what they did to me. I'm at the hospital right now ... because of Antifa. Do you still think, after seeing this, that they're just an idea?"

The tweets are unavailable at the time of this reporting, as his account has been suspended.

78-year-old shotgun-toting granny flips the script on home intruder: 'Oh no, you don't'

A 78-year-old Spanaway, Washington, grandmother approached a late-night intruder in her home with a shotgun — and demanded he wait until police arrived on the scene.

What are the details?

The woman, identified by just her first name, Sandy, told KIRO-TV that she was awakened in the middle of the night on Sept. 20 when her dog began barking.

Sandy said she immediately knew something was wrong, so she crept out of bed and checked the house. When she got to the laundry room area of her home, she saw a male intruder standing just feet away.

Sandy said she wasn't about to let the intruder get away and immediately confronted him.

"We looked at each other for a few seconds, and he turned and started to leave," she told KIRO. "And I said, 'Oh no, you don't. You stay right there!'"

She then she snatched up her shotgun and aimed it directly at the man, who froze.

"I reached over and got my shotgun," she recalled, "and I cocked it, and I told him to stay right there."

Sandy then directed the suspect to the steps on her porch, where she held the gun on him until police arrived.

"I followed him out, and I just stood there with the shotgun waiting for the police to come," she told the station, admitting that she was initially scared to death.

After the suspect complied with her demand, she said a calm came over her.

"I thought, 'This is amazing!' I said, 'You know, I've got grandchildren your age,'" she recalled telling the intruder. "After he was so meek and mild and sat down like I told him to do? It was empowering. I felt like at least I was in charge. I wasn't afraid."

'I was really hoping to get laid'

Sandy then told the station the real reason he broke into her home.

"He said, 'Well, you know, I was really hoping to get laid,'" she recalled. "That perked my ears up. That made me think, 'Oh, my God.'"

She wasn't the only one invoking the name of God following the scary incident.

WHDH-TV reported that the male suspect told deputies that he'd been looking for his wife and that God sent him to the elderly woman's address.

Authorities took the unnamed suspect into custody, but later released him after Sandy reportedly refused to press charges against the intruder.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot's 'Census Cowboy' rides horse during protest till its feet bleed and it collapses. Now he's facing a felony charge, and the horse may need to be euthanized.

Authorities arrested 33-year-old activist Adam Hollingsworth — also known as the "Dreadhead Cowboy" or "Census Cowboy" — after a Monday protest in which he rode a horse on a Chicago highway until the bleeding horse collapsed.

The horse, which is in critical condition due to its injuries, may now need to be euthanized.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) tapped Hollingsworth to work with her earlier this year to boost census participation in the city.

What are the details?

According to a report from WTTW-TV, Hollingsworth rode the horse for more than seven miles on the Dan Ryan Expressway during Monday's impromptu protest.

The horse, which was reportedly not outfitted with proper shoes for concrete, collapsed after running for about an hour.

Cook County prosecutors said the horse's treatment was the "equivalent of forcing an 80-year-old woman run a marathon," WTTW reported.

Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Kevin Deboni said that the horse was nearly run to death and suffered "extensive damage" to its health.

Deboni said that the horse's eyes "were dilated to the point they looked like cartoon eyes."

All for #KidsLivesMatter

Hollingsworth said that he rode the horse on the Dan Ryan Expressway during rush hour to support the #KidsLivesMatter movement, according to the outlet, which describes the initiative as one "that aims to raise awareness and motivate residents to fill out the census to help communities receive better funding."

According to Block Club Chicago, the movement is in response to children killed by gun violence.

In August, Hollingsworth told the Block Club, "When you get kids occupied and they've got things to do with their time and their life … all this senseless killing that's going on, it'll slow down a whole lot. It's important to support dance groups [or] anything that's got something to do with kids. If it's something positive, support it."

Witnesses of the Dan Ryan Expressway incident told the outlet that they saw Hollingsworth kicking and whipping the horse to keep it running even after it slowed its pace due to exhaustion and injury. Shortly after, the horse collapsed on the ground.

Emergency veterinarians responded to the scene and took the horse in for treatment of severe dehydration, overheating, and lacerations to its front legs that caused heavy bleeding. Authorities took Hollingsworth into custody.

WFLD-TV reported that the horse also had sores beneath its saddle, which was not properly padded.

A felony charge and a rebuke from the mayor

In a statement, Mayor Lightfoot's office condemned Hollingsworth's "stunt."

"There is a right way and a wrong way to call attention to issues of great importance and this stunt was decidedly the very wrong way," the mayor's office said in its statement.

Hollingsworth was charged with a felony count of aggravated cruelty to an animal, as well as misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct, trespassing, and other traffic-related offenses.

At the time of this reporting, the horse remains in critical condition, and will never be able to be ridden again.

The horse may also have to be euthanized due to its injuries and "due to the suffering the animal will likely endure for the rest of its life."

Hollingsworth was held on $25,000 bond during a Wednesday court appearance, and was required to pay 10%. He is due back in court on Sept. 30.

'Lori, come help me, I can't do it alone'

On Thursday, a tearful Hollingsworth told the Chicago Sun-Times that he did not abuse the horse.

"My focus is on the 'Kids Lives Matter' because if you look up the history of when it comes down to kids getting killed, 2020 is the highest rate ... and it ain't right," he told reporters. "Everybody is trying to steer away from that part, and that is very important — that is an important topic we need to stick on."

Hollingsworth insisted that how he treated the horse was "no different than how horses are treated in the circus or at a racetrack," the outlet reported.

"The people that don't know anything about horses looking from the outside in, you would think that what I did was cruelty to animals," he explained. "But if you go to a racetrack, it's 100 times worse, if you go to a circus, worse. ... It's way worse than what I do to my horses. I probably could've did a little bit less, but I had to make a statement."

He also insisted that the description of the horse's injuries were exaggerated, and that he would like to appoint an independent veterinarian to examine the horse.

"I think that is just a way to make the situation seem worse than it is because I am a black brother and I am doing very good for the community and standing up for the Kids Lives Matter movement and not focused on anything else," Hollingsworth reasoned.

He also revealed that he has been the subject of abuse since his arrest.

"Every day I step outside I am taking a chance with my life," he said. "I basically look at [the hate mail] and just close them. I can't change how a person feels."

He also called upon Lightfoot to defend him.

"When [Mayor Lightfoot] called upon me [to assist with the 2020 census], I was there for her," he added. "Monday was my stress signal: Lori, come help me, I can't do it alone."

After high school suspends football players for carrying Thin Blue, Red Line flags, a local group awards scholarships to the two teens

An Ohio nonprofit group has awarded a scholarship to the two Little Miami High School football players who were suspended from school after carrying a Thin Blue Line flag and a Thin Red Line flag before a Sept. 11 game.

What's a brief history here?

Brady Williams, whose father is a sheriff's deputy, and Jarad Bentley, whose father is a fireman, insisted that they wanted to honor those killed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

Following the move, school authorities suspended the two and in a statement said that the teens were turned down when they initially requested to fly the flags before the game.

Superintendent Gregory Power said, "We can't have students who decide to do something anyway after they've been told they shouldn't be doing it. ... We did not want to place ourselves in a circumstance where another family might want a different flag to come out of the tunnel, one that may be [one that] other families may not agree with from a political perspective."

Following outcry, the administration rescinded the suspension order and permitted the teens to return to school.

What are the details?

On Friday, an Ohio nonprofit group called "Holiday for Heroes" announced it would be awarding the teens a scholarship for their support of police officers and firefighters.

In a statement, the group said, "Brady and Jarad are true PATRIOTS, they did something last Friday that showed they are far beyond their years. These men stood up for a cause they believe in. As they took the field with flags in hand it reminded us how we felt 19 years ago, heartbroken yet strong and united."

According to Fox News, "Holiday for Heroes" has not yet disclosed the scholarship amounts.

Previous scholarship awards have been issued in the amounts of $2,500 and $5,000, according to the group's website.

Last week, the two told "Fox & Friends" that they found a lot of support in the community following the dust-up.

"We wanted to carry out flags to honor the first responders who went towards danger instead of running from it 19 years ago, and we were told 'No' and we kind of took that to heart and we still wanted to honor them and so we did," Williams said during the appearance.

Bentley said he felt compelled to carry the flags "because if it was my dad that had died trying to save those people, I wanted someone to honor him in that way as well."

White professor who pretended to be black resigns from George Washington University. Now the school offers counseling to impacted students.

Jessica Krug, a former professor at George Washington University, has resigned from her teaching position at the venerated Washington, D.C., college.

Krug came under fire last week after announcing in an essay published on Medium that she is not the black woman she has pretended to be — but a white, Jewish woman from suburban Kansas City.

What are the details?

According to NBC News, a spokesperson for the university announced that Krug submitted her resignation.

School officials initially placed Krug on suspension, and told her that if she did not resign, she would be fired.

A Wednesday email from Provost M. Brian Blake read, "Dr. Krug has resigned her position, effective immediately. Her classes for this semester will be taught by other faculty members, and students in those courses will receive additional information this week."

The outlet reported that the school was offering up "counseling services" for impacted students.

'I have built my life on a violent anti-black lie'

In the now-viral essay, Krug insisted she should be "cancelled" over her wrongdoing of pretending to embody "North African blackness," "U.S. rooted blackness," and "Caribbean rooted Bronx blackness."

Krug in her essay also said that "unaddressed mental health demons" were to blame for her behaviors.

"I have built my life on a violent anti-black lie," she admitted in the lengthy missive.

Professor 'raised questions about the veracity of her own research and teaching'

An initial response from the school read, "The members of the faculty of The George Washington University Department of History are shocked and appalled by Dr. Jessica Krug's admission on September 3, 2020 that she has lied about her identity for her entire career. With what she has termed her 'audaciously deceptive' appropriation of an Afro-Caribbean identity, she has betrayed the trust of countless current and former students, fellow scholars of Africana Studies, colleagues in our department and throughout the historical discipline, as well as community activists in New York City and beyond."

"The discipline of history is concerned with truth telling about the past," the statement continued. "With her conduct, Dr. Krug has raised questions about the veracity of her own research and teaching. Accordingly, the department calls upon Dr. Krug to resign from her position as associate professor of History at GW. Failing that, the department recommends the rescinding of her tenure and the termination of her appointment."

'Antiracist Baby' causes an uproar on social media as it encourages babies and toddlers to confess to their inherent racism

"Antiracist Baby" — a children's book designed to help parents and their young babies fight racism — is stirring up all sorts of responses on the internet, as well as on social media.

Just last week, NPR placed the book — which is geared for newborns to children age 3 years old — on its 100 favorite books for young readers.

What are the details?

The book, written by No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Ibram X. Kendi, was released in June.

Kendi wrote the book, according to reports, to help "empower parents and children to uproot racism in our society and in ourselves."

That feat, according to Kendi — who is also director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University in Washington, D.C. — is apparently only possible through raising "antiracist" babies.

According to The Caldron Pool, the book lays out nine steps from which parents can base raising an ethical and inclusivity-seeking child.

The book ensures that if parents follow the rules step by step, it will help to "improve equity, such as opening our eyes to all skin colors and celebrating all our differences."

Such steps include calling out racism when it's seen, and confessing to inherent racism as babies and toddlers.

The book uses friendly looking cartoon graphics, depicting demonstrators with signs that read things like "Black Lives Matter" and "Equity now!" and more.

The book, according to The Federalist, opens with the following passage:

Antiracist Baby is bred not born.
Antiracist Baby is raised to make society transform.

A portion of the book reads, "Nothing disrupts racism more than when we confess the racist ideas that we sometimes express."

Anything else?

The book also touches upon privilege.

"Some people get more, while others get less ... because policies don't always grand equal access," the book goes on to explain.

One Amazon reviewer writes, "This book is complete garbage, and merely pushes his anti-intellectual binary claim that everyone is either a 'racist or non-racist,' again catering to the market of spineless, 'woke,' white, self-flagellating liberals who have bought into his nonsense so they can be redeemed. A mere pile of tripe that seeks to indoctrinate infants into the same mind-numbingly stupid ideology of 'wokeness.'"

Another adds, "The concepts in this book are just as prejudice [sic] as what it claims to be against. The diction in this book is hardly suitable for children and preach radical ideologies."

On Twitter, one user wrote, "Racist babies that need to confess their Racism?? Repeat all that out loud and really listen to it. THIS WORLD HAS LOST ITS DAMN MIND!!!"

Another added, "ESSENTIAL MARXIST PRIMER FOR BABIES! NO TIME TO WASTE FOR INDOCTRINATION! READ THEM: 'ANTIRACIST BABY BOARD BOOK' (ONLY 24 PAGES LONG) Is your baby racist?"

'We're either being racist or antiracist'

In a July interview with the Harvard Gazette, Kendi said that there's no such thing as "not racist" — people are either "racist or antiracist."

“The heartbeat of racism itself has always been denial, and the sound of that heartbeat has always been 'I'm not racist,'" Kendi said. "What I am trying to do with my work is to really get Americans to eliminate the concept of 'not racist' from their vocabulary and realize, we're either being racist or antiracist."
