Bizarre fungus hijacks cicadas, transforming them into killer nymphomaniacs

The fungal parasite Massospora cicadina not only cohabits and transmogrifies the bodies of its hosts, but bends their will to its purposes, spreading death, destruction, and spores along the way.

While this might sound like some sort of a demonic possession, scientists have characterized the process by which such Entomophthoralean fungi — an order of fungi that takes its name from the ancient Greek words for "insect" and "destruction" — subvert host structures and behaviors for their own aims as the modification of host phenotypes.

Whereas Entomophthoralean fungi largely kill their hosts in order to disseminate its spores, Massospora cicadina keeps its host alive.

There are two types of Massospora cicadina infections. Cicadas with stage one infections produce spores capable of infecting other adult cicadas. Cicadas with stage two infections lay fungal traps for the next generation of cicadas that will emerge from the soil some 13 or 17 years later.

Up to 10% of both a 13-year brood and a 17-year brood will face the possibility of becoming "zombie insects" this year. The University of Connecticut's Biodiversity Research Collections Periodical Cicada Information website indicated that for the first time since 2015, a 13-year brood will emerge in the same year as a 17-year brood.

A study published in the peer-reviewed Nature journal Scientific Reports noted that infections cause "distention and loss of the terminal abdominal segments, genitalia included, in both sexes; the breached abdomen exposes infective spores and allows their dispersal."

One of the study's authors, Dr. John Cooley, an associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Connecticut, Hartford, recently told CNN that when it comes to this fungal parasite, "the truth is actually much stranger than science fiction."

After an infected cicada's genitals and rear fall off, a white fungal plug bulges out in their place.

Matt Kasson, an associate professor of mycology and forest pathology at West Virginia University, told CNN, "It looks like there's a gumdrop that's been dropped in chalk dust, glued to the backside of these cicadas."

Some scientists have observed cicadas with stage one infections flying less often and opting instead to drag around their spore-laden abdomens, spreading spores and looking for potential victims. Cicadas with stage two infections apparently spend more time flying around, bombing spores from their corrupted abdomens.

Both sexes with stage one infections apparently become hypersexual in an effort to serve the parasite's purposes.

'So when they pull apart, guess what happens? Rip.'

Infected males try to maximize the victim coverage, exhibiting the wing-flick signaling-behavior "normally seen only in sexually receptive female cicadas" in an effort to trick other males into thinking they are females keen on copulating. By the time male victims realize their mate is not as advertised, it's often too late as the spores spread easily in close proximity.

Female cicadas are apparently incapable of identifying and avoiding infected males, so they too are at risk.

Cooley's study noted that "Massospora functions at least partly as a sexually transmitted disease and the novel behaviors of infected males are complex manipulations instigated by the fungus for its own benefit."

Deception is not the only way the infection is spread.

"Periodical cicadas have interlocking genitalia. So when they pull apart, guess what happens? Rip. And then there's a cicada walking around with someone else's genitals stuck to them," said Cooley. "And now the cicada that's infected is busted open."

Once "busted open," infected cicadas become what Kasson and others refer to as "saltshakers of death."

They fly around, flaking brown spores that threaten to infect the next brood.

Kasson and other scientists determined that infected cicadas are likely able to keep moving and mating despite their injuries because the fungus produces psychoactive compounds during infection. The first is a type of amphetamine, cathinone. The second is psilocybin, the psychedelic compound in magic mushrooms, in infected cicadas.

Cooley has, however, expressed uncertainty whether such drugs would affect the bugs in a similar manner as they do vertebrates.

Georgia woman apologizes amid backlash over viral video showing her smash street performer's piano, feign remorse, then allegedly swipe cash

A street performer was tickling the ivories Saturday to the delight of passersby in Athens, Georgia, when one woman apparently decided that his cover of Billy Joel's "Piano Man" was in desperate need of percussion. She sauntered over, knocked the musician's instrument to the ground, then allegedly absconded with money from his tip jar.

The video of the incident, which took place early Saturday morning, has since gone viral, prompting outrage and a response from the alleged perpetrator. While ostensibly contrite, the woman in the video, identified by the Daily Mail as Shauntae Heard, stressed in her apology that she has "seen worse downtown."

WAGA-TV reported that Andrew Hsu, a student at the University of Georgia, was playing Saturday near the corner of College Avenue and East Clayton Street.

Hsu is admittedly no stranger to unwelcome contact from drunks while performing but "never to the point where [his piano] will fall down and with the force that she used."

According to Hsu, Heard had hit his keyboard earlier in the evening, but returned around 2:30 a.m. for a repeat performance.

The video shows the perpetrator approach, press a flat hand atop the keyboard, and press down. The piano stand collapses to the ground along with the keyboard. Hsu throws up his hands in dismay, asking Heard, who appears genuinely shocked, "What's wrong with you?"

"To come out here and do this, and someone to mess it up is just not, like, a cool thing to do," Hsu told WAGA.

The pianist, who later filed a police report, claimed that extra to breaking his stand, Heard also grabbed money from his tip bucket — an accusation Heard denied in her apology on social media.

Hsu suggested that the alleged theft angered him more than the destruction.

"That's what gets me mad," said Hsu. "I'm like, 'Yo, what are you doing?' One of her friends comes back. I'm like, 'Did you just steal money from me?' And her friend says, 'Yeah, she did.'"

In her apology on Facebook and Instagram, Heard reportedly said, "Public service announcement. I'm sorry for everyone that has seen the viral video. I have took accountability for my actions. I know it was wrong and ignorant of me but please keep my family out of it," adding that she had already spoken directly to Hsu.

"Everything is good no I didn't steal any money, and I didn't break the piano[.] I'm a human just like you all. Everyone has made mistakes nobody isn't perfect again I'm sorry, For my actions," wrote Heard. "I've seen worse downtown this is nothing compared to what I did and I know it's not wright."

The Daily Mail indicated that Heard also shared a screenshot of her texts with Hsu, where he said, "Hey, I accept your apology. ... I told people not to harass you but I can't control what happens."

"You have to know that actions have consequences," Hsu reportedly added in his correspondence with Heard. "While I feel bad that people are harassing you, you've got to own up."

'I do it to blow off steam': Award-winning Penn State professor accused of molesting dog

An award-winning professor from Penn State University was charged Tuesday following an investigation into the apparent molestation of a dog and other deviant acts caught by a trail camera in Rothrock State Forest.

Themis Matsoukas, 64, a professor of chemical engineering, faces various charges including open lewdness, indecent exposure, sexual intercourse with an animal, and animal cruelty, reported WTAJ.

The Centre Daily Times indicated that a criminal complaint, filed by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, stated that Matsoukas was seen engaged in sexual acts with a dog near the restrooms at Rothrock Sate Forest on at least one occasion.

Park rangers reportedly identified the professor on the basis of his North Face backpack, present in the video where Matsoukas was allegedly otherwise naked but for his socks and shoes. The backpack allegedly also played a starring role in other deviant spectacles caught on video, going back as far as 2014.

The trail camera, set up to monitor people stealing bags of hand sanitizer from the state park restrooms in the Alan Seeger Parking Area, reportedly filmed a man in a state of undress masturbating, molesting a collie, and performing other lewd acts while trying to record the degenerate performance on an electronic device, reported WPMT.

The DCNR indicated the area where the alleged acts took place was within viewing distance of Stone Creek Road, frequently transited by visitors on their way to the nearby picnic area, campgrounds, and Penn Roosevelt State Park.

Investigators began looking into the incident in April, but were confronted by more evidence in May, when Matsoukas allegedly returned to perform more foul deeds. This second incident in recent months provided investigators with additional insights into the possible identity of the suspect.

According to the complaint, park rangers served a search warrant to the professor at his home in State College on June 9, finding Matsoukas "visibly nervous."

Inside his home, DCNR rangers found a collie whose characteristics matched those of the dog in the videos, along with items worn by the suspect in the videos and three iPads.

Matsoukas is said to have repeatedly told the rangers, "I'm done, I'm dead, you don't understand, I do it to blow off steam."

At one point during the search, the professor allegedly told investigators to shoot him, saying, "I need to die."

Matsoukas, the recipient of various awards including the "Outstanding Teaching Award" from the Penn State Engineering Society, has taught graduate and undergraduate courses for the past 20 years.

The university noted in a statement, "Themis Matsoukas has been relieved of his responsibilities and is on leave."

The professor's attorney, Matthew McClenahen, said Wednesday that "it would be inappropriate to make any comment at this time."

'RuPaul's Drag Race' winner arrested for allegedly threatening to slay a cop

A former "RuPaul's Drag Race" winner recently modeled an orange outfit for a photo shoot, but did so sapped of his characteristic flare — understandable, as he was having his second mug shot taken inside a three-year window.

James William Ross IV, whose transvestic stage name is Tyra Sanchez, was recently arrested for allegedly threatening to slay a police officer in Starke, Florida.

According to an arrest report obtained by TMZ Saturday, the 35-year-old got into a car accident on May 17, approximately 45 miles southwest of Jacksonville in Starke. The fender bender appears to have psychically unmoored Ross.

When police arrived on the scene, Ross allegedly leaped out of his car and began berating the officers.

Officers' efforts to calm down the drag queen were to no avail. They tried to handcuff Ross, but he allegedly resisted and threatened to shoot an officer.

Police indicated that Ross subsequently attempted to reach into his car, but an officer intervened, placing him in a "bear hug."

This intervention reportedly failed, so officers deployed a taser, but that too proved ineffective.

While Ross allegedly attempted to escape on foot, he was soon captured and charged by the Starke Police Department with two misdemeanors: resisting an officer without violence and simple assault on an officer. He was released from jail on May 19.

The New York Daily News reported that since being named "America's Next Drag Superstar" in 2010 and landing a $25,000 prize, the runway has been particularly bumpy for Ross.

The father of two was reportedly banned from attending DragCon after posting threats online, telling a fan in 2016 to "go kill yourself b****," and suggesting that suicide survivors were cowards who "give up."

He was arrested in 2020 for allegedly vandalizing an Atlanta apartment complex where he was considered a squatter, writing "Don't move here ever" across a wall in spray paint.

In March 2022, Ross announced his retirement as a tranvestite and asked to be disassociated from "RuPaul's Drag Race," accusing the show and its fans of racism, reported Out.

Footage shows loose tire send Kia Soul flying above LA freeway

A Kia Soul was sent flying heavenward in an accident Thursday in Los Angeles. While the hatchback's ascent over the 118 Freeway was not ultimately rapturous, there may have been something providential about its return to earth, granted that the driver managed to walk away in one piece.

Anoop Khatra witnessed the crash, having trailed behind the Kia at a distance in his Tesla. Khatra's dash camera managed to capture the Kia Soul's aerial acrobatics.

The Kia can be seen in the footage speeding along the left lane. As it progressed, over to the right, a high-clearance silver pickup can be seen signaling a drift into the lane one-over.

Just as the dark Kia drew up parallel to the pickup, the truck's front left wheel popped off and rolled immediately in front of the hatchback.

While the pickup dropped down onto its driver's side rim, the Kia and its driver were sprung at least 10 feet into the air by the loose tire, which had remained upright and continued to spin.

After roughly three seconds of air time and rolling clockwise, the Kia unceremoniously hit the freeway nose-first and upside down. It then completed one more longitudinal roll before grinding to a halt.

To add insult to injury, the truck tire responsible for the Kia's initial liftoff caught up with the wreck and struck it in the rear.

While the debris and glass shed by the Kia settled, the pickup completed its trek to the far side of the freeway.

Khatra tweeted, "Surprisingly the driver of the Kia was actually able to walk away from this unharmed."

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that there were no major injuries resultant of this accident, reported the Telegraph.

KABC-TV indicated that sheared-off lug nuts apparently led to the tire's initial detachment from the pickup truck.

Florida mayor calls it quits, starts packing his things in the middle of a city council meeting: 'This is simple math'

The city of Clearwater in Pinellas County, Florida, had a special city council work session on Monday morning that ran over three hours. Mayor Frank Hibbard helmed the meeting for the first hour, but then decided the job wasn't for him.

Hibbard called a brief recess nearly an hour into the meeting. Prior to the recess, the council had been discussing plans for a new $90 million City Hall and municipal complex. Hibbard, a moderate Republican, was alone in opposing the project, reported the Tampa Bay Times, not least because of an unfunded gap of $60 million in the project's financing.

Hibbard told WTSP that he had always been fiscally responsible, which put him out of alignment with the council.

"There's no graft or anything else," he said. "It was a 4 to 1 vote forward with what I believe is reckless spending."

After the board reassembled, the exasperated-looking mayor called the meeting to order with one last strike of the gavel. A 8:51 a.m., he said, "Um, this is probably one of the toughest things I've ever done in my entire life, but I know it's right."

"I'm not a quitter, but I'm not the right leader for this council any more," announced Hibbard, as adjacent council members looked on, aghast. "I'm concerned with where the city is going, because this is simple math, and we're not doing very well on the test."

As the mayor continued with his unexpected resignation, he began packing his briefcase.

Citing his conscience, his family, his health, and "other things," Hibbard underscored that he could not continue as mayor.

"I've always believed in making sacrifices for public service. And I love Clearwater. And I love some of the things we've gotten done."

Hibbard suggested that City Manager Jennifer Poirrier would continue to serve the community well in her position and went so far as to nominate his replacement: Hoyt Hamilton, whom the outgoing mayor suggested "knows the city."

After reiterating that he was "the wrong guy right now," the mayor noted he had called his wife earlier, who was similarly flummoxed by the news.

Hibbard thanked his staff and his peers, noting he appreciated them despite past disagreements. He proceeded to grab his briefcase and his bottle of water, then marched out of the room.

The remaining council members shared looks of disbelief and shock as the door slammed shut behind him.

Florida Politics reported that Hibbard was in the final year of his four-year term and had previously indicated that he would not be pursuing re-election. He was elected with 57% of the vote in 2020 and had also been mayor from 2004 to 2012.

Hibbard told WTSP, "This isn't that big of a deal; they'll move along."

After another brief recess, acting Mayor Kathleen Beckman said, "Little surprised, saddened, shell-shocked. ... You know, people make significant decisions about their life or work every single day, and a lot of factors weigh in on that. I have no idea why Mayor Hibbard chose to resign today. I'm just as surprised as anyone, but the work goes on."

Beckman led the meeting and continued to do the work Hibbard proved unable to continue.

Twitter flooded with racist smears, 'Uncle Tom' attacks after Sen. Tim Scott delivers RNC speech

GOP Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.) closed out the first night of the Republican National Convention Monday night with a rousing and hopeful speech about how, in America, anyone has the opportunity to succeed if they work hard and how his family went from "cotton to Congress in one lifetime."

The speech drew high praise from many for its fresh reminder of the promise of the American dream.

But unfortunately, in what is becoming a regular occurrence when Scott speaks, countless users online also flooded Twitter with racist smears and "Uncle Tom" attacks against the black senator.

Here is just a small portion:

@chipfranklin Uncle Tom, oh l mean Tim Scott...

Every time I see TIM SCOTT with that plantation Negro slave grin on his face, I feel nauseous. TRUMP caused HERMAN… https://t.co/FenqJb7qfb

— Darryl Stewart (@Darryl Stewart)1598327450.0

One elected Democratic official, Rep. Steve Cohen (Tenn.), even liked a tweet that said Scott "might as well be white" given what his message is.

And then there were many more:

— WTF (@WTF)1598355273.0

Sadly, these types of attacks against Scott are nothing new.

Earlier this year, Scott called out the racists on Twitter for heaving racial slurs at him after he was tapped to lead the Republican police reform legislation effort following the death of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers in late May.

In the hours after the announcement was made that he would lead the effort, Twitter users had allegedly referred to Scott as "token," "boy," and argued that he was "being used." He would later show some of the hate-filled messages to GOP colleagues at a private lunch.
