'Used to justify slavery': Democrats play race card when Jewish colleague calls out Dems who voted against Israel resolution

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) upset her Democratic colleagues last month after criticizing them for opposing a pro-Israel resolution.

Last month, the House passed a resolution to stand "with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists." Nine Democrats voted against it outright, while another six refused to support it by voting "present."

Before the vote, CNN correspondent Manu Raju asked Wasserman Schultz about the Democrats who planned not to support the resolution.

"I would hope all members would support a resolution that condemns terrorism," she said. "The brutal attacks that were perpetrated against the Israeli people that were killed. They have 218 hostages, they took 222.

"Someone who votes against this I would think doesn't have a soul," she added.

Progressive Democrats did not warmly receive the criticism, according to CNN, and their reaction underscores the rift among Democrats on the issue of Israel.

Some Democrats were so enraged by Wasserman Schultz's remarks, in fact, that they accused the former leader of the Democratic National Committee of using a racist trope.

CNN reported:

The issue involving Wasserman Schultz brought leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus in the fold. Some in the CBC told the Florida Democrat that referring to people of color as “soulless” is a trope that was used to justify slavery, one House Democrat told CNN. The congresswoman told them she didn’t realize the implication of her words, the lawmaker added.

That rift does not appear to be shrinking any time soon.

On Tuesday, 22 Democrats broke party ranks and voted to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for promoting the slogan "from the river to the sea," which is widely known to be a rallying cry for Hamas.

With progressive Democrats reluctant to support Israel, Jewish Democrats in the House are pushing to form an official Jewish Caucus. Wasserman Schultz is helping lead that charge, filing paperwork for the caucus' creation last week.
